Thousands still without power after blizzard

Posted in:

* Daily Herald

Roughly 42,000 customers in northern Illinois still were without electricity as of 4:30 a.m. Tuesday because of the snow that hit Chicago and the suburbs.

Sunday’s storm featured blizzardlike conditions with up to 13 inches of wet, heavy snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph in some areas that snapped tree limbs and downed power lines.

Officials said about 350,000 ComEd customers lost power, but service has been restored to many of them.

Arlington Heights officials said the village was the second-hardest hit after Chicago and that ComEd could not say when more than 5,000 without power would get service back.

Oy.

  1. Pretty cold for an extended power outage. Hope everyone’s safe.

  2. Noticed coming home last night that all the lines from the alley poles to the houses on my block are covered in ice. Hoping they hold until it gets above freezing on Thursday.

  3. Electric linemen are tough people who go out in all kinds of nasty weather to restore power to customers.

    No power at my house for four days after that wonderful weather event.

  9. Doesn’t Com Ed participate in the mutual-aid program where other utilities jump in to help when there are major outages?

  10. From a Tribune article: ComEd spokesman John Schoen,

    “Tuesday and Wednesday, the company is bringing in 262 crews from out of state to help restore power as fast as is possible, Schoen said. The goal is to have all power restored by Wednesday.”

    I hope he’s right.

  11. Just wanted to say thanks to “Bruce” for the continued support. Like his namesake, “Bruce” has once again shown his true colors. Rather than a nice gentle snow storm, “Bruce” came in with a path of woe and suffering by causing extended power outages, flight cancellations, and numerous car crashes.

    So thanks “Bruce”. /s

    Brought to you by those greedy union members of IBEW, working through the night in the cold so people have heat and light.
