No real surprise here:
Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes said Thursday that he will run for a third four-year term in his current office.“I will be seeking re-election in 2006,” Hynes, a Democrat, told The State Journal-Register, ending speculation that he might seek a different office that year.
Hynes is a good guy who got himself in over his head during the US Senate race last year. He just wasn’t prepared for the challenge of that campaign, even though he had won two previous statewide races by large margins.
He’s also had his problems with Governor Blagojevich. After supporting the guv in the 2003 session, Hynes had hoped that Blagojevich would remain neutral in the US Senate primary. Instead, Hynes was convinced that the governor’s operation was pushing Blair Hull, and he wasn’t pleased.
The 36-year-old comptroller predicted that Gov. Rod Blagojevich will not be challenged in the Democratic primary in March 2006 and that “the party will be unified behind him” for a second term.But when he was asked how the governor has been doing, Hynes said his style differs from that of Blagojevich.
“I’m not one for the confrontational approach,” Hynes said. “I believe working more in coalition- building, and that I definitely disagree with the governor on. I don’t think he has made a great enough effort to reach out and work with the legislature” and other constitutional officers.
According to the article, Blagojevich has promised to work more closely with those very same people this year. Color me skeptical.

I think Hynes should take a break from political life. Best case, he will now be seen as a guy who has served 3 terms as comptroller, not much upside. Worst case, he will lose re-election and be done for good. He needs to realize that the first US Senate Poll had him at 20. On election day, he had 21…a move of 1 with 8 million or so spent. NOT IMPRESSIVE. Obama originally had 14 and won with 50. Dan is definitely going to face serious competition and won’t have much to defend himself. He lacks charisma, people are not motivated to volunteer for him, people wasted a lot of money on his senate race, so it will be difficult to raise money and even more difficult to get unions to help him. He needs to do something to reinvent himself. Peg Roth should be fired immediately and replaced by someone who knows what they are doing. It was common knowledge during the campaign that Dan was a lazy campaigner.

I think you’re way too pessimistic. I don’t think Hynes was a “lazy” campaigner, just not a great one.

Going up 1 percent in a race makes me think he must be lazy. Plus he has hacks like Peg Roth advising him. Get ready dude, he is going to get beat in 06.

Dan Hynes may have serious competition for Comptroller in 2006, but nobody can objectively call him lazy. Although he may not be a great campaigner, he has proven to be an excellent Comptroller. There was a time when he was the lone voice in state government regarding the state’s fiscal problems. I cannot predict Hynes’ politcal future after the Comptroller’s office, but the taxpayers of Illinois should be glad to have him there.

Dan Hynes may need some sharper advisers around him, but don’t count him out in 2006. My prediction is that he’ll cruise to victory over someone like Rep. Dan Rutherford. Let’s remember, it was Dan Hynes who was the first to issue fiscal alerts about the state’s crumbling fiscal foundation. He was right then, and he has taken his job seriously, and he has earned another term.
