Question of the day: Golden Horseshoe Awards

Posted in:

* Our first category…

* Best Statehouse-area bartender

* Best Statehouse-area wait staffer

As always, keep in mind that this is about the intensity of your nominations, not the number of nominations, so make sure to fully explain your votes. And do your very best to nominate in both categories. When lots of people focus on just one award, I figure it’s an organized conspiracy and discount those votes.

  1. Kathleen- Globe, without question IMO

  2. Alex Owens, Gin Mill. He can handle the best and the worst, always calm energy, good conversation, and innovative. Do yourself a favor and ask him to create something, he comes up with great stuff on the spot!

  3. * Best Statehouse-area bartender: Dennis at the Sangamo Club. Might be one of the only bartenders in town that knows your name, drink and when you need another. Takes great care of those that have bizness to do.

    * Best Statehouse-area wait staffer: The ladies at Saputos. I don’t want to name anyone in particular because it is a real team effort there, which I appreciate and is why we always have larger bizness gatherings there.

  4. 12:38 Anonymous, did you not see the warning to answer both questions? You’re not doing Kathleen any favors here.

  5. Same goes for Anon at 12:39.

  8. @Rich I was 12:39 unfortunately I do not eat out in the area enough to know names of servers, could only speak on bartender.

  9. Kathleen at the Globe. Knows everyone, knows what they need and always kind to everyone who walks through the door, until they’ve earned a ticket back out.It’s about time to retire her from the running and just name this award after her going forward.

    Wait staff is harder because there are a ton of them who are worthy. I’m going with Tony at the Sangamo Club though. He’s been dealing with some difficult crowds there for 35 years and is always a consummate pro. One of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet to boot. (And to shamelessly play on the judge’s sympathies, Tony is retiring here in a few weeks, so this is his last shot at winning.)

  10. Best bartender: Missy Campell at Gab’s (although she just moved to run NuVoh. (Never saw preston tend bar…that would be a hoot)

    Best Wait Staff: Everyone at the Magic Kitchen is very top notch Sqirrelly Shirley at Saputos a good pick.

  11. Sorry Rich, wasn’t trying to dodge question but really don’t know many of them - never would try to hurt Kathleen’s chances tho, think the world of her

  12. Best bartender- Alex Preston, DH Browns, hands down. He may get them out a little slow, but he will throw them back with you as long as you can keep up.

    Best staff- Everyone at Saputo’s. They’re all really the best.

    Comment by Upstatehack Monday, Dec 3, 18 @ 4:19 pm

  13. I eat at the bar at Obed’s a fair amount so Kate there fills both categories for me. Her friendliness, attentiveness, and memory for food and drink preferences makes it easy to feel like a “regular.”

    Comment by John Amdor Monday, Dec 3, 18 @ 6:29 pm

  14. Bartender - Alex at DH Browns

    Wait staff - it has to be Bob at the sangamo club. He’s got a drink ready and poured for you before you even sit down and he’s always got a smile on his face. If you’ve had a rough day at the Capitol, Bob is always there to cheer you up.

  15. Alex Preston at DH Browns for best bartender…he knows your drink and always remembers your story. He’s like Uncle Buck from the 1989 movie.

    Comment by Anonymous Monday, Dec 3, 18 @ 8:46 pm

  16. Preston without a doubt. What makes his genius, he hates everybody equally. Dem., GOP., Socialist whatever as long as you’ve got the “green” that’s his partisanship. Governors, Senators, Representatives all come into pay their respects to a tavern that’s been slinging suds for more than 40 years. Alex has made DHB cool again, after a dry spell in the early 2010s.

    Comment by Cornfield Cowboy Monday, Dec 3, 18 @ 8:58 pm

  17. Waitstaff - Obed’s by far. They’ve got a great product made only Greater by the service.

    Comment by Cornfield Cowboy Monday, Dec 3, 18 @ 9:01 pm

  18. For both categories, Kate from Obed’s.

    Comment by Smitty Irving Tuesday, Dec 4, 18 @ 1:02 pm

  19. Bartender: All at JPK; Alisha at the Butternut Hut; Kate at Saputo’s

    Waitstaff: Shirley and the Saputo’s team

    Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Dec 4, 18 @ 4:33 pm

  20. * Best Statehouse-area bartender - Kathleen at the Globe is the best. She has seen it all and has a great attitude. Not afraid to tell anyone to shut it if it needs to happen. She is what makes the Globe a political bar. Without her it would struggle to be mediocre at best. This is what sets her apart since everyone else relies on the location/setting/bar menu/who shows up etc to be considered. Kathleen is the sole source of what makes the Globe.

    * Best Statehouse-area wait staffer - I vote Tony at Sangamo. He is retiring at the end of December after 35 years. He knows his customers and always brings me an iced tea when I sit down. Super friendly and all around wonderful person. If all wait staff modeled themselves on Tony they would be successful. Tony! Tony! Tony! I’ll miss him.
