Musical interlude: Who’s zoomin’ who in Chicago?

Posted in:

* With a big hat tip to Paris Schutz and Mary Ann Ahern, Toni Preckwinkle today filed challenges against three women candidates for mayor: Susana Mendoza, Dorothy Brown and Lori Lightfoot.

Willie Wilson challenged two fellow African-American male candidates: La Shawn Ford and Ja’Mal Green; and one African-American woman: Dorothy Brown. So, Brown is now facing two challenges.

Paul Vallas challenged Garry McCarthy. And Jerry Joyce challenged Bill Daley after some initial hesitation.

Those escaping a ballot challenge today included Gery Chico, Jerry Joyce, Paul Vallas, Toni Preckwinkle, Amara Enyia and Willie Wilson.

* On to the tune

…Adding… Lori Lightfoot…

We’re confident that we’ve got the signatures necessary to get on the ballot, full stop.

Petition challenges are the old Chicago way—and so is Toni Preckwinkle. Preckwinkle lacked the courage to take on Emanuel and aligns herself with the likes of Berrios and Burke, so it’s no surprise that she’s trying to take out the only independent reform candidate in this race. It won’t work. While Preckwinkle plays the political games of the past, I’m looking towards the future and working hard every day to build a transparent and accountable City Hall.

…Adding… Daley…

The campaign of Mayoral Candidate Bill Daley announced that it is not filing any petition challenges in the upcoming mayoral election. Campaign manager Jorge Neri released the following statement:

“We went through a rigorous process to verify our signatures and feel confident with what we filed. Given Bill’s desire for greater access to the ballot, we chose not to file challenges against any candidate.”

In response to the petition challenge filed by the Jerry Joyce campaign, Neri said, “We have not seen the Joyce challenge. However, we are looking into questionable tactics surrounding the Joyce campaign’s challenge and our team will take appropriate action with the proper authorities as necessary.”

…Adding… Joyce…

The campaign of mayoral candidate Jerry Joyce on Monday filed a challenge against the petitions of William Daley, citing the lack of sufficient valid signatures.

Meanwhile, the Joyce campaign remained confident in the quality of its own submission, with some 30,000 signatures collected over months from all corners of the city by a team that was unpaid and 100 percent volunteer.

“This was the first real test of this campaign and our success demonstrates the strong desire for new leadership in this city,” Joyce said.

  1. Who’s lawyering for whom?

Just tell us who hired Kasper so we know how this movie ends.

  3. YDD, my thoughts exactly on another thread. so far, here is all I know…..Preckwinkle has keri lynn-krathefer (sp) from Ancel Glink She works on municipal issues lots. Vallas has Burt Odelson. the list of usual suspects…Kasper, Nally, Raucci, Kreloff, Jaconetty (sure, why not, he’s no longer employed by the Assessor),Means, and is Lavelle still around?….beckons for research and a story. while I agree that Kasper is the goods in so many ways, there are some great guys (and it’s usually guys) out there for hire.

  4. Susana Mendoza will survive. Petition challenges are a sexist tool used by males like Daley to suppress the vote. Classic Machine move. Mendoza will survive yet another obstacle placed upon her due to her gender.

  5. I read an article from the Sun-Times about this topic and apparently Rickey Hendon filed those challenges on behalf of Wilson, but against Wilson’s wishes….hmmm.

I hope if anyone is to be removed, that it is done quickly and that we don’t have a repeat of the Cook County Assesor’s Democratic Primary race….

It’s real sexist how her sheets looked, like a round tabling.

Round tabling is a gender thing.

    Ugh.

  7. ~Mendoza will survive yet another obstacle placed upon her due to her gender.

Toni Preckwinkle challenged more than 14K of Susana Mendoza’s signatures, not Daley.

  8. = Petition challenges are a sexist tool used by males like Daley to suppress the vote. =

Oh, please. Then explain why Daley isn’t filing any challenges, Preckwinkle has filed against three women, and male candidates have filed challenges against other male candidates.

Challenges are a time-honored method of trying to knock off those candidates that might cut into your vote, regardless of race, gender, religion, etc.

  9. Now that Tom Jaconetty is retired from his county job, he’ll be crazy busy. I would not be surprised if Kasper sits this one out. I’m wondering if the Tronc empire will figure out that Toni is no reformer. She keeps acting like an old school machine boss. It’s well past time that Tronc, WTTW, the Sun Times and the other Chicago media outlets move past a 20 year old narrative and call her out.

LOL, dude, none of that makes the slightest bit of sense. You did not make any effort to read the post.

Spectacular, willful ignorance of facts right up in your grill. You have a future on the tronc edit board.

Daley isn’t challenging anyone. Preckwinkle is challenging Mendoza.

What do you get for your nonsense, Green Stamps? Chicken Nuggets?

  11. The fact that Susana Mendoza is actually at risk at the moment is total insanity. She wants to run the third largest city in the U.S. and couldn’t be bothered to get good enough signatures.

Then she heads off on vacation in the middle of it. Truth is stranger than fiction in Chicago.

  12. To my mind, the story of Chicago’s mayoral race thus far is that Susana Mendoza’s ‘brand’ has already suffered quite a blow.

There’s still plenty of time for her to turn things around, of course, but it still feels noteworthy.

  13. These challenges are the fruit of a corrupt system that is designed to dissuade people from running for office. This is in reality in-direct voter suppression. And we wonder why Chicago is such a mess.

Be sure to clutch those pearls before you hit your fainting couch.

Those being challenged ain’t exactly delicate daisies. And Chicago ain’t Mayberry.

But if you’re worried about voter suppression — like in Georgia and North Carolina — the Brennan Center for Justice is a good place to start and get real about it.
