A lazy tone deaf line to what challenges face Illinois.
As a throwaway line, it’s not unlike someone you’d meet in a tavern bragging about their “home”.
That crew is better than this.

I was going along with it until “deserve”. Saying “Yay, our home is great and I love it” is good. Admonishing people, saying “If you don’t like it here you don’t deserve to live here” is judgmental and harsh, at the least.

So I am guessing she makes the same argument about Chicago being the greatest city. as well? Let me guess, she does that tomorrow.

She is just trying to punch through. It’s hard to get people to focus on the Comptroller’s speech anyway. If she wasn’t running for Mayor, this wouldn’t have registered one blip.

This is a topic that doesn’t get the attention it deserves imho - IL outmigration being fueled in part by outmigration from Chicago’s S/SW sides.
I’ve read a couple long-form pieces on this subject in the past year, will try to provide links next time outmigration comes up.
Re: Mendoza’s view of IL, I sort of agree with her. Illinois is a wonderful state despite its serious financial problems - which can, given political will, be overcome.
However, the weather is pretty bad, and those who decide to emigrate to FL or AZ should, I think, be forgiven.

This is a non-issue for me. This was a single line in the middle of speeches full of both serious policy proposals and jokes at the expense of Illinois. Heck, Jesse White preceded Mendoza by making jokes about revoking drivers licenses and needing sensitivity training, and no one said “Hey, maybe we shouldn’t joke about those things since corruption and workplace harassment are real issues.”
Point is, maybe this isn’t the most inspiring line of not the most inspiring speech, but it got some laughter, and I think Mendoza’s record should speak louder than a mediocre joke.

Democrats are so tone deaf. They can keep raising taxes and run everyone else out. A few Chicago powerbrokers will be left looking around asking “where’d everybody go?”

But just as much as saying “if X happens / doesnt happen” is dumb - (go ahead and leave for all I care), so is saying “you dont deserve to live here”.
Often, she doesnt know when to stop. Not a good thing for a Mayoral candidate either Male or Female (Vallas has this same tendency, especially when he ran CPS)

I’m with @Northsider. It was meant as a funny line on a day marked by optimism. It’s also in keeping with her branding as a spunky fighter. Maybe a little silly, but nothing to get upset about.

I won’t think of moving out of state, unless they put a new tax on retirement income. Then, I would have to weigh all factors.

The speeches were real nice. I did not hear JB speak on Mental Health and the strong leadership roles that is needed as well as implementing more programs within the mental Health Division.
