Just days into her new job as a state representative, Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville) has managed to cause a stir among her constituents by characterizing her hometown of Naperville as having “white supremacist policies.”
Her remarks about Naperville came in a Facebook response to a post by Felicia Palumbo, who in early January wrote that “Naperville is the biggest bullies … horrible.”
“I know and I am so sorry,” Stava-Murray replied on her “Anne Stava-Murray for U.S. Senate” Facebook page. “I actually wanted to move to Oak Park but stayed to work on my community. Our history of white supremacist policies is ongoing.” […]
A white supremacist Naperville was news to Mayor Steve Chirico.
“I would never characterize Naperville in this way,” Chirico told the Policy Journal, “but I realize that people have many different perceptions and views.”

Stava-Murray said Friday she is glad her comment, which was posted about two weeks ago, is getting attention.
“I think this is a very necessary conversation people need to be having in Naperville and the Chicago area because we are still so segregated,” she said. “There are many schools in Naperville that have almost no black students in them and many schools where there is not a single black teacher teaching.”
She also said Naperville makes no effort to educate residents on the city’s history as it relates race disparities and the city’s lack of a race-based bullying policy is “one of the areas where a lack of policy is a white supremacist policy.”
Keep in mind that her plan is to run statewide in two years.

Most of the Chicago area was redlined, including Naperville, and that legacy is a legacy of white supremacy. I can’t say I know much about Naperville’s current local ordinances, but it’s politically difficult to call out this reality and I can respect Stava-Murray’s bravery in this regard even if she could have been more precise in her language.

It would be interesting to compare and contrast some policies between Aurora and Naperville (being roughly the same size) and have her identify which ones make one town more friendly than the other.

I agree that Naperville has a diversity problem, but this is just bad politics in action…makes alot of enemies without actually causing successful dialogue about the issue.

What is exciting is she won under the radar. She now wants to BE the radar everyone is watching… without any knowledge of her current job, without understanding what it could even take to defeat Durbin.
She’ll have a shorter career than former Rep. Olsen

Naperville does have a diversity problem. The way she said it was graceless (it was in response to a FB post, not a speech). She could have shown more tact, but we all know what she is talking about. Pearls clutched. Let’s move on to actually addressing the problems.

Welcome to the new world of “woke” democrats. She is a perfect example of living and legislating by slogan and feelings. The answer is to blame others, and if there is no evidence to support your claim you then just call it implicit bias. Perhaps the better descriptor is the party of guilt. It will be interesting to see if she gathers traction in Springfield much less her home district. If she does more reasons for many of us to start seriously shopping for homes outside Illinois.

Naperville is nearly as ethnically diverse as Oak Park. Granted, it’s a different kind of diversity.
By all means move to Oak Park. Just keep your left signal on as you drive down I-88/290. Oak Parkers will appreciate your perpetual virtue signaling.

Once her children are of school age will she send them to public schools in Naperville? If she does she will quickly learn that Naperville is indeed quite diverse. Or will she send them down the same private school path of her white privilege?

Pearl clutching, indeed. A quick google search shows a couple of recent articles on police treatment of African American residents, including in 2016 and 2017 articles on the Trip and the Daily Herald. Not like this issue has never been raised, even if she did it poorly.

Did she run to not win? These are the words and actions of someone who had no plans to actually win the election, and now has no earthly idea what to do with herself. A few more weeks of this, and the state Democratic party needs to have a talk about a graceful transition and appointing a replacement. Because two years of this will turn this seat from “surprise Democratic” to “permanent Republican.”
Also, moving to Oak Park to escape “white supremacist policy?” Park yourself a few blocks further east, and then we’ll talk.

There’s a time and place to talk about how white supremacy/structural racism are baked into our systems and policies. Some Facebook comments is neither. You need context and time to be heard.
On the plus side for her, she has clearly started her statewide bid by trying to court the Oak Park vote.

I don’t think HDems could get that lucky.
Her sole platform now is this elected office she completely dismissed as a relevant job before being sworn in… but… she’s sworn in now and will probably use and milk as much out of it as possible.
The gift of her leaving is probably too much.

Many of Stava-Murray’s messages/causes (fighting back against sexism, institutional racism, etc.) are very worthy ones. She just does not seem like a competent or trustworthy messenger, which may, ironically, hurt the causes she champions more than it will help them.

I would hope this representative has put as much gusto into learning her job as she does making these accusations. That said, the Southern Poverty Law Center says a branch of the Illinois Family Institute (an anti-LGBT group) is active in Naperville.

I hate myself for saying this, but Drury at least had a steadfast position (he was better than everyone because he was a former federal prosecutor, his computer screen should face the door, etc.). Stava-Murray just seems to be saying random things to get attention. His at least weren’t random.

Wow, kind of a dumb way to respond. If you want to actually address a “problem” insulting much of the populace isn’t the way to break the ice. And Oak Park ain’t Hyde Park either.

It is hard to find good teachers and African American teachers have never been plentiful in the applicant pool.

The high income Asians of Naperville are every bit as elitist as the whites, I assure you. Tact is a tactful word for glossing over obvious ugly truths. She chose not to.

Illinois has some pretty well documented examples of institutionalized racism which was pervasive throughout the state.
I get the sense that some of the commenters are letting the messenger distract from the accuracy of the message.
Illinois is the Land of Lincoln, the Logan Laws, and Sundowntowns. We have a complicated history.

Good Lawd ma’am. Huge School Districts, 203, 204 serving the Naperville and portions of Aurora areas are very diverse.
Naperville had enough diversity to propel a lot of these progressive (?) rookie candidates into office. She’s really intellectually and philosophically lost.
Oak Park wouldn’t meet her standards either. Nowhere does.

Perhaps she was confused with Naperville sharing a border with plainfield.
Plainfield, in late 2017, just missed being on the wrong end of a federal civil rights lawsuit filed against it for its zoning practices.
A vacant church was for sale, and was bought by another group wanting to use it for the exact same purpose - a church.
But they were brown. So the town embarked on a series of meetings where they displayed their faux concern about cars parking in the lot as a reason to block the permits. Even though the traffic would have been less than its previous use.
It took them 3 tries to finally get it right, after it was pointed out prior to the 3rd board vote that they would lose a very embarrassing federal civil rights lawsuit if they voted to deny for the 3rd time.
For more fun, use the google to search for ‘plainfield kkk postmaster’, to see another example of this upstanding town from the 1990s.
Growing up there, I remember wooden crosses being burned in yards in my neighborhood… among other pleasantries.

Ran a minimalist campaign on a “standing up to Madigan” platform, won because she rode the blue wave against a wholly unremarkable appointed replacement in David Olsen, who thought he had the race in the bag and spent his time working on other GOP campaigns in the area.

Actually, I think David Olsen outperformed every GOP candidate on the ballot, if we look only at H81 precincts.
For example Olsen lost by 904 votes while state senator John Curran lost the H81 precincts by 3,776 votes. Curran lost DuPage overall but was saved by Homer Glen in Will County and by suburban Cook.
Olsen also did better than all the GOP statewide candidates such as Governor, AG, etc . . .

I recall recently reading that Naperville had something close to 15% Asian population, one of the highest in the state. Do Asians not count as minorities? Last I knew, anyone who can afford to buy a home in a community, Naperville included, may do so. Is that incorrect?

I sometimes feel that we’re being told that success is bad. Financial success is maybe even criminal. To make the effort to educate yourself and get a high paying job and live in a community with others like this? Sick! We really do seem to be headed to socialism where incentive is killed, success is demonized and uniform mediocrity is desirable.

Umm…
She needs a crash course on this topic, which is one which has bedeviled experts for a long time. Minimum requirement (if she’s really interested, which I kind of doubt): Richard Rothstein’s The Color of Law. Rothstein provides an extensive scholarly bibliography so she can then delve into the particular urban history/demography of Chicago and its suburbs.
This is just bizarre - the intersection of historical redlining with wealth inequality, local zoning rules, flight to the suburbs, segregated schools, what freshman legislator could possibly take these subjects on in a serious and responsible way?
Nobody can fix this by noting it, and believe me it’s been noted.

While I understand and agree you garner more attention by blowing up bridges, I always found it more productive and ultimately more satisfying to build bridges.
I assume there is an orientation or crash course in ‘my new role as a legislator’ put on by the leadership of the respective parties. Apparently she didn’t attend or wasn’t listening.
I am a primary vote for her color ballot and I would not vote for her not so much based on what she said, but by her lack of judgment in saying it.

There is a major difference between “racism” and “white supremacy.” Racism is alive and well in Naperville–unfortunately, as it is in other places. “White Supremacy?” As a public school teacher in Naperville, I can confidently say that, in that regard, she is way off–way off–the mark.

From one who lives in her district and has her eyes open…can’t disagree with her. I had a service tech at my home who is hispanic and drives his own vehicle…and two different neighbors followed him to see where he was going. I’ve had parties where at least half of the guests were not white…and I was told about it. OH, and the best…we have an Indian family that moved into our neighborhood and a petition was circulated about the “Muslims’ that moved in. Also, after Pres. Bone Spurs was elected I intervened in an altercation of 2 young white men began berating a woman who was wearing a hijab…she was older than me(60) and with her elementary age granddaughter. I wasn’t the only one who saw it, but I was the only one who told the men to leave her alone. OK, that was in Lombard, which is out of this district (it was Breen’s), but close enough. Would I have used the term supremist? No, but at least white privilege, cuz it does reek of it.

So, you’re telling us - it wasn’t, right? Or are you only pretty sure you could have watched what looked like an attempt to aid something that could have happened possibly in Naperville, or at least attempted to impossibly failed to attempt to aid something that happened two weeks ago?

A shame that Rep. Olsen didn’t really campaign. Even in the face of the blue wave he should have been able to keep his seat against Stava Murray who campaigned even less than he did. An even bigger shame that our district has been saddled with such poor representation.

Her rhetoric divides and feeds hate. I’m really kind of done with her narrative that white, straight, men are the problem with this world. She and others like her, engage in recreational outrage to gain support from those who would divide us. I forgive her ignorance and her hateful speach. Now, let her 15 minutes be done and let us be reminded that diversity whithout unity in purpose is pointless chaos. May we all unite in a productive purpose, forgive past transgressions, and try see the best in others.

I can. I get your point, that some of your neighbors are bigots or worse. But the representative clearly was alleging that certain policies enacted by the city of Naperville promote or protect a white supremacist agenda.
We might not be able to change a person’s heart, but we damn sure can change a city’s policies. She should clarify exactly what it is she’s trying to say, because calling everyone in Naperville a bigot isn’t a great way to begin her legislative career.

Could not agree with you more. WHere has this influx of malcontents come from? Hate, division, sinister plots everywhere? How did these people grow up that they are so suspicious and see negativity in everything? There are the glass half full/empty people I guess.

FWIW, denying the minority status of Asian-Americans or that they are victims of discrimination is not “progressive.”
Naperville’s Asian-American population is comprised largely of immigrants. Hardly a defining characteristic of a white supremacist Mecca.
Also, while it is certainly true that there are racists living in Naperville since there are racists living everywhere; and while it’s probably true that post war housing discrimination shaped housing patterns in Naperville from the 50’s until the 70’s…
It is also true that Naperville’s most explosive growth began in the 1990’s and continues through today, adding roughly 70K people in new developments unshackled from legalized federal discrimination and covenants.
I am not sure what recent public policies the representative is referring to, but I think the city’s leaders and her constituents deserve a more substantial explanation.

Interesting that when Rep. Underwood came back to Naperville after she was sworn in she didn’t make any of the same comments or complaints. Maybe growing up there rather than wanting to live in Oak Park makes a difference.
