* The governor’s people say Gov. Pritzker will combine his State of the State address with his budget address. This is a fairly common practice. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve cringed when people who should know better say they wanted to hear more about the budget during the SOTS. They are two separate speeches, unless they’re combined. And considering the budget issues we have, it’s probably best to combine them.
State of the State messages are required by the Constitution, but they don’t have to be given as speeches…
SECTION 13. GOVERNOR - LEGISLATIVE MESSAGES The Governor, at the beginning of each annual session of the General Assembly and at the close of his term of office, shall report to the General Assembly on the condition of the State and recommend such measures as he deems desirable.
Same goes for budgets…
SECTION 2. STATE FINANCE (a) The Governor shall prepare and submit to the General Assembly, at a time prescribed by law, a State budget for the ensuing fiscal year.
Wednesday, February 20th at noon is the date set by the General Assembly.

To the Post,
Great idea, but the trick will be in presentation, combining numbers and facts with rhetoric and imagery.
The delivery will be as critical as the facts and the priorities.
I’ve said many times, which is the reality;
A budget is a weighing and measuring of agenda, policy, and programs.
Heard it so often.
Writing and delivering a speech laying out a budget which is the document of agenda, policy, and program makes sense for a “first speech” addressing these… by this governor.
Can’t wait. It’ll be far more interesting than the nuts, bolts, wonky bites… tall order for the governor and his crew.
Looking forward to it.

As to SOTS/Budget - cool, wrap it all together because the state of the budget *is* the state of the state.

Can’t wait to hear his tax proposal that promised to cut taxes on the middle class and those striving to get there by having folks like Governor Rauner and him pay their fair share.
He could be in for a shorter honeymoon than Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine whose marriage lasted 5 days.

I just read that line in my head with genuine enthusiasm as opposed to the intended sarcasm. It read much better.

Anon 3:17, median household income is somewhere between $62K and $65K depending on the source. So a lot more households make a lot more money than they think they do, relatively speaking.

Anonymous 3:37…We’ve gone over this subject in the past without a lot of agreement. Those making $200k/year but living in the Loop were appalled to think that they were wealthy given the high cost of living that left little after mortgage payments, private school fees, and funding their retirement. Those living elsewhere accused them of being out of touch with the real world where you might be doing well to get your full 40 hours a week at minimum wage between two jobs at big box stores.
Both have a point, although I tend to sympathize a lot more with the poorer family that has no other choices rather than the family in the Loop that is building wealth in their home and has other choices they can make, such as commuting.
I also suspect not much tax relief is on the way, given the pressing needs for state dollars. Just my 2 cents.

No worries, you will find a way to lie about what Rauner did anyway.
I hope he proposes a way to raise revenue high enough to pay the bills.
