[Susana Mendoza] also took a shot at Bill Daley, a fellow mayoral contender.
Daley was the White House chief of staff in 2011, when the Obama administration was grappling with a regulation in the Affordable Care Act that required religiously affiliated hospitals, charities and universities to provide birth control coverage for employees.
According to news reports, Daley, a lifelong Catholic, organized a meeting with President Barack Obama and then-New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan. Dolan and other Catholic leaders wanted an exemption to the contraceptives mandate.
“Democratic members of Congress who lobbied the White House said they believed that Mr. Obama’s chief of staff, William M. Daley, and his special assistant for religious affairs, Joshua DuBois, favored a broader exemption,” The New York Times reported. They eventually carved out a compromise.
Now Mendoza questions Daley’s commitment to reproductive rights. “You can’t claim to be pro-choice and then try to use your power to cut off access to reproductive choice for women as a chief of staff to the leader of the free world.”

Mayoral contender Susana Mendoza’s own words were used against her Monday as two political allies of Toni Preckwinkle and a man exonerated from death row questioned her record on the death penalty. […]
Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, state Sen. Robert Peters, D-Chicago, and Nathson Fields, who was cleared of double murder, sought to “set the record straight” about Mendoza’s role in abolishing the death penalty. The three specifically pointed to Mendoza’s claim that she was the deciding vote in overturning capital punishment — a claim that was found to be “mostly false.”
“This is especially concerning for me that she would use this because she had already made herself very clear where she stood on criminal justice issues,” Yarbrough said at the West Loop law offices of Loevy and Loevy.
“She’s no reformer and I really take issue with this whole business of being the 60th vote, like she carried the day.”
The fact check actually found that Mendoza’s claim was “technically correct.”

Horrible ad by Enyia. You’re trying to get name recognition with that? But she’s the darling of the Chicago Reader and Ben Joravsky so I am sure they will praise the ad.

I couldn’t help but notice that Mendoza is attacking the staffer to the decision-maker, but not the actual decision-maker.

Those Catholic hospitals Mendoza doesn’t want to work with have taken care of a lot of uninsured, poor patients for well more than a century, including scores of immigrants. I get the reproductive rights angle, but you might want to pick another villain.

Call me crazy but me thinks a negative spot blasting Mendoza for proposing a property tax increase is gonna resonate a lot more than this connect-the-dots charity care exemption issue…

Is it OK to run for Mayor of Chicago and have your intro ad, claiming to be for all of Chicago, not have a single white man? Seriously, I’m a white man who realizes that we are a major part of all the problems that we are currently trying to solve — i get it. But there are also a lot of white men who will vote. why would i vote for somebody who fails to include a single white man in her ad with no less than 20 people in it?

Whenever anyone brings up Daley in DC all I can think of is his fainting spell. Yes, I know it happened during the Clinton years. It’s just what pops into my head.

I didn’t think it was bad apart from the fact that she didn’t get her name out there enough.
But then, I read the Chicago Reader and I like her policy proposals, they’re strongly progressive of course.

The Amara ad is quite good for round 1. She’s appealing to who she thinks will get out and vote for her. It might not be as effective in round 2 (where many white males might be marginalized) but for round 1 it’s good.

I’m surprised businesses back Bill Daley. Of all candidates asked the question of a city income tax he is the only one who didn’t dismiss it outright.

Forget about race or gender, how about someone in the ad for Enyia with people who look older than their 20s. That may be who she thinks her base is, but that’s not going to be enough to get to the runoff.

The Reader and Joravsky endorsed someone for mayor? I haven’t heard that yet. The Joravsky radio show interviewed all the candidates (minus Rahm who had an invite) and was very informative. Too bad it’s off the air.
