Chicago mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot released her first TV ad of the runoff election, “Change.” Filmed primarily at Lightfoot’s election night celebration, the ad captures the grassroots momentum that propelled Lightfoot to first place and highlights the importance of electing an independent reformer to bring needed change all across the city. This is Lightfoot’s second TV ad. Lightfoot released her first TV ad, “Light,” on February 6th.
Toni Preckwinkle started running a TV ad on Thursday.

“I traveled across the city and saw people struggling with repossessed cars and rising rent,” says Lightfoot in the ad. “With underfunded neighborhood schools and gun violence on their blocks. I know, on a deeply personal level, that we need change. This election is about demanding an independent, accountable City Hall that serves the people, not the political machine.”

I can’t wait until she gets to the part about Joe Berrios keeping property taxes artificially higher in low-income, minority communities and how Toni supported Berrios (and Burke) for years and years.
Yes, they might both be progressives, but only one of them is a reformer. This is a change election.

I noticed how Toni accused Lightfoot of inappropriate behavior for spending her own money on her campaign. I wonder what our Governor thinks of that.

Very good. Love the passion. And she’s first out of the box with “change.”
Toni, when she says “political machine,” she means you.
I bet Preckwinkle wishes now that she hadn’t wanted that Cook County Dem chairmanship. Hard to argue “reform” with the history of that outfit around your neck.

It’s a strong ad. The shot of the street of midcentury bungalows could be found somewhere in almost every neighborhood in the city beyond downtown. The concerns she mentions are concerns felt by residents in nearly every neighborhood. I think there is universal appeal to this energetic ad. It’s a grade A effort right out of the box.

Just a warning: I’m biased as I’m definitely going to vote for Lightfoot again.
With that disclaimer out of the way. I liked it. It’s a nice little positive spot. It doesn’t go into details, but if you’re trying to reach folks who may not have heard of you before Tuesday night you might not want details.
I will say some of those “jumpy” shots were way too quick & in the face. It made it harder to concentrate. But that just might be me.
Still a nice solid piece. And most importantly it got out before Preckwinkle could run a negative ad on Lightfoot. That gives Lightfoot a chance to control her own first impressions to run-off only voters.

Lightfoot was a partner at Mayer Brown, a go-to firm for tobacco, Wall St., union-busting and GMO interests. We will indeed find out which candidate has been working for reform (higher wages, criminal justice, etc.) and which for the status quo. Lightfoot has spent years making millions off the status quo.

Solid B. Kind of an introduction for people who may not have considered her at first. But too much camera movement with some overly quick shots, shakiness. Could be framed and juxtaposed much better.

Can you provide a link to any cases she personally worked on related to “tobacco, Wall St, union-busting and GMO interests”?
I looked around and found nothing like that, but I would be very interested in seeing it if it exists. No snark. I want to be informed. Thanks for your help.

Toni’s commercial states she’s a “former CPS teacher” but she spent only one of her 10 years teaching at a public school. I didn’t notice an asterisk.

Mayer Brown’s representation of Altria (aka Philip Morris), Merrill Lynch, Cargill and many other companies is public record. It doesn’t make a difference whether she worked on the cases: As an equity partner, she profited from them. She was an owner of the firm, a decision-maker, and shared in the profits. She could no more walk away from it than Rauner could walk away from Sterigenics.

My initial comment didn’t get through (maybe it came out too snarky.) Mayer Brown took her firm bio off the web, but if you look at an archived version, it says that she defended Merrill Lynch against a class action alleging race discrimination.

I thought it was a decent start but she will have to up her game. This is fir all the narbles and i hope lightfoot understands the gravity of that.

I like it. As others noted, a solid introduction. She’ll need a Preckwinkle neg and another more substantial pro-Lightfoot up by mid-next week though.
