“Real ID” cards are finally coming to Illinois, but they’re not easy to get

Posted in:

After years of delays, all Illinois residents will be able to get new driver’s licenses and state IDs beginning Monday that comply with post-9/11 federal requirements aimed at making identification cards more secure.

Secretary of State Jesse White’s office began issuing cards that comply with the federal Real ID Act in January, and they will be available at all 138 driver services facilities statewide by Monday. Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, Illinois residents will no longer be able to use their current state-issued cards to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities.

But White said Wednesday that residents still have a choice about whether to get a new driver’s license or ID. They’ll still be able to use a passport instead of a driver’s license when traveling by air or accessing federal buildings, and people who don’t fly or visit government facilities won’t need a new ID or a passport.

“There’s no rush for you to apply for the Real ID,” White said at a news conference at the Thompson Center in the Loop.

Based on federal guidelines, to obtain an Illinois REAL ID card, all applicants – including those who currently hold a standard Illinois DL/ID – must provide:

  1. People vote for Jessee white not for the quality of his work but for his over likability. I feel like he mostly botched the real id process and your non Jessee White Sec. of State would have gone down for this several year debacle.

  2. How often do these new ID cards have to be renewed? Seems like a lot of work to get one.

  3. So the Real ID SS requirement is _less_ strict than the current regular DL requirement, which won’t accept W2s or pay stubs: https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_x173.pdf

  4. == How often do these new ID cards have to be renewed? ==

They are driver’s license complying with the Real ID specs.

  5. I just renewed my driver’s license two weeks ago at the Thompson Center and they did not issue me a Real ID. This is now good until 2023 but I won’t be able to fly with it beginning 1/1/20. Makes no sense.

  6. C Ball, you misread. You need all that stuff. No pick and choose options here.

  7. Why would you need an ID to enter a federal building?

    It’s actually October 1, 2020.

  9. Im with Dee cee here. The state is going to need to do a better job communicating this change. I know a lot of people who don’t have a passport. I personally never bring my passport unless leaving the country. This has the potential to have a lot of people heading to the airport unaware that their drivers license isn’t a valid form of id

  10. So I renewed my DL little over a year sgo. I had to bring a mountain of paper’s. I was told at SOS office this was due to real ID. Now it isn’t real ID? Took two trips due to this. Someone got some explaining

  11. The renewal process will be like a standard DL. You won’t have to reapply with all the other documents.

Airlines will be doing a lot of notifications
to let people know that they will need a Real ID by October of 2020. It’s on the flyer to be prepared, not on the state to tell everyone. Heck people still can’t figure out the right way to bring liquids on a plane.

I’m getting a new DL in week or two and will go ahead and get the Real ID. I’m not going to lug my Passport around to fly domestically. But I do have a passport card and could use that to board a plane if needed.

  12. About time. Nice job Congress. It only took the feds time to implement since 2002.

  15. == Why would you need an ID to enter a federal building? ==

A couple of years ago I was denied entry to visit the Naval Academy because of the lack of compliance of the IL DL.

When I have visited a Federal Agency HQ in DC, they also required ID when entering the security zone.

Part of the reason I got a passport card when I got my passport renewed the last time.

  17. Paperwork required doesn’t seem TOO bad…I don’t need to find a paper copy of my SS card at least

  20. This is definitely not a feather in Illinois or SOS cap. Way too long to implement. Coincidentally, I saw my first ad for the real ID at lunch today.

Comment by Shemp Wednesday, Mar 27, 19 @ 4:32 pm

  21. Anon E Moose,

Annoyingly, one needs an ID to enter most federal and most state buildings. Try to attend a hearing at the Bilandic building without one; they will turn you away. It’s security theater. It’s not like they check your name against a list.

    Comment by C Ball Wednesday, Mar 27, 19 @ 5:15 pm

  22. 38 states got there ahead of Illinois….What’s new.

Comment by Simple mind Wednesday, Mar 27, 19 @ 5:33 pm

  23. I just saw the first TV ad touting “Real ID”. It says you’ll need five forms of ID to get it without explaining what is required.

Comment by Wensicia Wednesday, Mar 27, 19 @ 6:43 pm

  24. They didn’t offer me one today, but I was at an express location and you can’t get them there. But they are taking your pic as the first step and making you remove glasses, which they claim is required by the feds. But if they aren’t Real IDs, why do they need to satisfy the feds?
