Very glad that Preckwinkle’s dog whistle failed, and all African-American wards apparently went for Lightfoot, who’s in a same-sex marriage. That’s progress.

Is Ameya Pawar’s political career now dead? Dude runs for Governor, drops out. Then runs for Treasurer and lost.
Also O’Connor losing was great, such a negative campaign.

Shocking results in O’Connor’s 40th Ward. Redistricting changed the demographics. The incumbent tried to reposition himself by campaigning towards the progressive left, but his ties to Burke and Emanuel proved fatal.

There was a tie in my area resulting in a coin flip tiebreaker. However one of the two people in the coin flip is wishing to concede the victory to her opponent.
Is it too late to drop out of a tiebreaker in that scenario?

In your dreams about AFSCME. The union didn’t endorse for mayor and did quite well with its aldermanic endorsements, as well as the treasurer’s race.

Here in Springfield the Sangamon County GOP went all in with a “Doom and Gloom” mayoral candidate and got whipped. Although officially non-partisan, they also lost control of the city council.

The CTU negotiations coming up could be long and acrimonious, but it’s partly their own fault. That’s what happens when you pick a side and your side gets demolished.

Lots of school funding referendums were defeated in the suburbs - not sure if that’s a sign that the electorate is worried about an oncomming onslaught of higher taxes and fees (I think I saw a couple of library funding initiatives did pass), but it seems the school referendums aren’t passing nearly as often as they used to.

Good luck Lori. I’m glad you were the run-off winner over the machine candidate. But they will be in your face every step of the way and you will find out how easy it becomes to be ensnared in situations requiring difficult decisions. Please remember that Chicago anchors the region, and its health and reputation affects many beyond the actual city limits–and vice versa.

The losing campaign had Madigan operatives and Emanuel money. Burke and Emanuel will be blamed for the loss, but the negative mailings were pure Madigan. The dozens of postcards became so much junk mail that must have annoyed some voters.

Some folks will always point to their pet issue as being “the” issue that caused somebody’s political downfall. Preckwinkle lost by almost 50 points. It wasn’t just the pop tax. In fact, most of the loudest opponents of the pop tax were defeated last year in the primary and general.

The Hinsdale high school bond referendum was plagued by a DuPage Policy Journal fake newsletter pretending to be issued by the school district. All over a $300/year tax hike on the average home.

For those who have clung to the delusion decades past the expiration date of a powerful, vote-stealing “Machine,” the Cook County Dem boss just got clobbered by 48 points and lost every ward to a first-time candidate.
The last “Machine” boss before her got smoked in a countywide Dem primary by a nobody-nobody-sent named Fritz.
There is no monolithic Cook County Democratic machine. Republicans get beat in the city and Cook suburbs because of lack of effort and their party brand, same as other big metros.

The only person more pleased than Lightfoot that Preckwinkle got pummeled is… Susana Mendoza.
Politics is a crazy business.
The loss, a 50 point loss, speaks to Lightfoot coming in against the right situation(s) in February and the runoff, the voters were done with the “others”
I didn’t have Lightfoot 6th, 7th… probably 7th or 8th in February.
Now?
Mayor-Elect Lightfoot will be inaugurated in the coming weeks.

Dark money funded, hyper-partisan, mud slinging candidate in a non-partisan mayoral race in DuPage County defeated. Restores a little faith that positive campaigns can still win.

The local SD lost it’s referendum so hello $300 athletic fees at the HS level.
Don’t have a pct breakdown yet, but at the county level it won handily in Will (younger part of the district also newer housing) but lost in Kendall (older Oswego), basically tied in Kane.

Yep, the 308 referendum is a downer.
It took Hinsdale a couple tries to get it through.
The cuts in junior high and high school extra curricular are going to steam parents, but the fees to participate now will steam them more.

Practical Politics, I recently moved to the 40th ward, and O’Connor’s mailings were obnoxious, both in content and in volume. It WAS annoying. So glad this is over.

One definite plus from a cost standpoint is that they won’t have to bring in larger furniture to the 5th floor for the new mayor.

Litesa Wallace got crushed in her bid for a seat on the Rock Valley College board. She wasn’t even in Rockford on election night and I think that says alot. I’m sure her resume has already been submitted to the Lightfoot crew.

46th ward is going to be fascinating to watch in the coming weeks. I would predict a recount and a lot of legal work.

It has happened before even in wealthy families.
Robert R. McCormick was a staunch conservative while his cousin, Joseph Medill Patterson, drifted from the Republican party and became a Socialist despite his inherited money. Eventually, Patterson opted to cede his interest in the Tribune to McCormick and focused on New York City where he operated the New York Daily News.

While I’m not a Chicago voter (obviously), the ugly campaign Preckwinkle ran will definitely be in my mind if she runs for Cook County Board President again (for which I do vote). I’m not going to make any grand sweeping statements about whom I will or won’t vote for without knowing who’s running, but man was there some stuff from her in this mayoral campaign I was not happy about.
(And I’m not a big Lightfoot stan — I have concerns about her history with policing, although I am willing to see what she does in her new role before passing judgment — but Preckwinkle threw some ugly punches.)
