Today’s quotable

* I’m not sure this is why the Democrats want a graduated income tax, but I do know it’s why the wealthy are so strongly opposed

Peoria Republican Senator Chuck Weaver said the biggest reason Democrats want a progressive tax is to make it easier to raise taxes on a small number of high-earners.

“Flat taxes are harder to raise. Illinois needs discipline,” he said.

  1. Not sure who the Senator is trying to help with this statement.

Linking the interests of the middle-class to the interests of the upper-class is always done to benefit the interests of the upper-class.

    Including The Chicken Man, himself.

Obviously, the money behind the opposition decided to go all out and defeat the graduated income tax concept in any form.

But there was nothing preventing GOP lawmakers from proposing a chained tax requirement in which all increases and decreases would be linked going forward after the initial rates were set.

  5. Raising taxes only to skin the wealthy and sandbagging on the pension payments is the worst of both worlds. It will be easier to raise taxes on the 1%, but ultimately not easier to collect them.

  6. == But there was nothing preventing GOP lawmakers from proposing a chained tax requirement ==

What prevents them is that they don’t want to vote to put it on the ballot under any circumstances. If they won’t support it anyway, why should they get to insert limitations?

  7. ==Illinois needs discipline==
Is he saying Illinois needs to attend a military academy or simply pick out a switch?/s

On a serious note, if it’s between sticking it to colleges/social services (like BVR) and making it easier to raise taxes on high-earners, I know which one I prefer.

  8. Also:

Peoria Republican Senator Chuck Weaver said the biggest reason Republicans oppose a progressive tax is to make it harder to cut taxes for the middle class.

“Flat taxes are harder to cut. Illinois needs to keep subsidizing the wealthy and corporations,” he said.

: Fixed it for ya, Chuck.

  9. I am voting NO on this until the rates are lower on the 97%.

Republicans need to negotiate and get the rates lower than 4.75% on those making under the thresholds.

  10. @CPA -

See my earlier comment. The GOP does not want to lower tax rates for the middle class.

Lowering tax rates for the middle class would require raising taxes even higher on the wealthy, since the GOP has no genuine spending cuts offer.

If you want to more tax relief for the middle class, you are going to have to lobby Democrats to raise rates on the wealthy even further or eliminate tax expenditures.

  12. Democrats plan to permanently raise taxes, spend the tax increase on more progressive programs, continue to ignore the pension crisis and dig the hole deeper so more tax increase will soon follow

  13. ==spend the tax increase on more progressive programs=

Like roads, schools, parks, police, healthcare for the poor and aged, higher ed… Why would society want to take care of those things? So selfish of those darn progressives.

  14. Sen. Weaver is a typical wealthy Republican, he wanted to be a Senator, so he waited until it could be handed to him by LaHood’s buddy’s. He isn’t a bad guy, but he knows how to take care of his pals from the Peoria elite. Come on you lazy 97%ers, get some discipline so the rich can pay lower taxes.
