*** UPDATED x1 *** Sanguinetti kicks off campaign

Posted in:

* Press release…

Former Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti announced this morning in her hometown of Wheaton that she is running for Congress in Illinois’ 6th District to fight government overreach and the tax and spend policies that threaten our economy and continued prosperity.

“I am running for Congress to keep the American dream alive,” said Evelyn Sanguinetti. “Only in America can the child of teenage immigrants who grew up on food stamps ascend to college, law school, and become our country’s first Latina Lieutenant Governor. I want my children to have the chance to live their own American dream, which is only possible through liberty, access, and opportunity.”

“I really wanted to see Sean Casten be the voice this district needed when he won election last November,” said Evelyn Sanguinetti. “Unfortunately, all we have is another politician cozying up to progressives and socialists in support of increased taxes and expanded government - when he should be fighting for the district he was sent to represent.”

Following Sanguinetti’s announcement today, she will head to the northern part of the district to tour a manufacturing facility in Cary – where she will discuss policies to promote jobs and continued economic prosperity with local business owners. Later Monday, she will host a rally in Barrington with supporters to discuss why she is running for Congress and why she can unseat Sean Casten.

Over the last two weeks more than 90 elected officials and community leaders have endorsed Evelyn Sanguinetti for Congress - including Congressman John Shimkus (IL-15) and Congressman Rodney Davis (IL-13)

“Evelyn Sanguinetti is the best candidate who can win in this district and make sure Nancy Pelosi is removed as Speaker,’ said Congressman Rodney Davis (IL-13). “Evelyn understands Illinois and the issues that are important to our constituents. She’s a suburban mom who will fight for lower taxes and smaller government so all future generations have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.”

…Adding… The endorsement list is now up. Here’s one

Bruce Rauner, former Illinois Governor

* Tribune

Despite her opposition to abortion, she said in a January 2018 interview with the Tribune that throughout the re-election campaign, she and Rauner “were on the same plane” and “were in sync as far as messaging and the things that we believed in and what we wanted to deliver for the people of the state of Illinois.” […]

While now seeking a role in shaping federal policy, Sanguinetti displayed some questionable command when it came to foreign trade policy in a July 2018 interview with a Bloomington radio station.

Asked if she was supporting Trump trade policies and tariffs that were affecting Illinois farmers, Sanguinetti told WJBC-AM 1230: “Well, yeah, yeah. I do believe that at the end of the day, if people are paying less to be part of an organized agreement between nations, they should pay their fair share.”

Sanguinetti’s comments echoed those that Trump made in an appearance before NATO, the defense alliance with European nations, which has nothing to do with foreign trade. Trump had urged NATO member countries to increase payments to the group.

*** UPDATE *** DCCC…

Right out of the gate, newly announced candidate for Congress Evelyn Sanguinetti is lining up to back President Trump and his re-election – even if she doesn’t exactly want voters to know, as the Daily Herald reports:

Given President Trump’s disastrous record of hiking taxes and health care costs, it’s no surprise that Sanguinetti doesn’t want voters to know that she’s squarely behind President Trump. But, when push comes to shove, Sanguinetti would be another rubber stamp vote in Congress for Trump’s agenda of higher taxes for Illinois homeowners and higher health care costs for middle-class families.

“It took Evelyn Sanguinetti less than a day on the campaign trail, but she’s already admitted that she’s backing President Trump and his agenda of higher health care costs and tax hikes for middle-class families in Illinois,” said DCCC spokesperson Mike Gwin. “It may be tough for a Springfield politician like Evelyn Sanguinetti to give a straight answer, but at least voters now know that – when push comes to shove – Sanguinetti will be on President Trump’s side, not theirs.”

    Sure, Evelyn.

  2. Hard for me to see how effective of a campaigner she could be since Rauner never let her do too much. But I suspect that with Trump on the ballot, the 6th is going to remain a heavy lift, anyway.

Comment by Arsenal Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:04 am

  3. It would’ve been easier for ole Slip and Sue to send an email looking for a job then helping Casten win re-election.

If the GOP can lose Skillicorn, Oberweis and Slip and Sue in one fell swoop, I wouldn’t mind.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:05 am

  4. Non-partisan comment. I’d guess there are about 400-500 words that are used exclusively by politicians on the stump. It’s only the placement of the words that make any difference. Like minded use the same, words/lines, and are not the least bit embarrassed that they are programmed mouthpieces that distinguish themselves only by practiced gestures. Don’t like Trump at all, but you can’t apply this observation to him, and that is something that sets him apart and people like that aspect.

  5. Her name recognition is probably somewhere closer to mine than Casten’s. I think she’s wildly overestimating the value of being a do-nothing Lt. Governor.

    Rauner and Trump.

She might have better luck reminding folks she tried to get a state job with the Quinn Administration.

I like the jean jacket, new approach, using costumes to pretend your someone your not. Wonder where she figured out this approach?

Has anyone else even thought of running for this seat against Casten or is this all the DCCC could muster? Is Ives looking at it, doesn’t seem like she’s going after Durbin? Actually haven’t heard anyone going after Durbin from GOP ranks?

  13. lol so much doom and gloom. Writing off E.S before she even gets started.

Before everyone rushes to declare Casten unbeatable I want to remind you of something simple.

    Demographics

The 6th CD has a strong, viable, and growing latino population.

Have you ever attended a campaign event that featured E.S? well I have. a lot of them in fact. And one of her staples is energizing the crowd by speaking in Spanish.

You can not deny that low energy, boring white guy Sean Casten, does not posses this skill.

Now, I will wait to see who else jumps in this race. She is not a guaranteed winner of the primary, there could be better people that throw their hat in the ring.

but for now, I think she has a shot.

Comment by Iggy Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:19 am

  14. The DCCC has to be encouraged by the names being floated to challenge Casten and Underwood. I imagine that so far, Sue Rezin is the only potential candidate generating any real concern.

Comment by Roman Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:19 am

  15. I have spent a little time with her, she is a pleasant lady. She has very little behind that smile and her immigrant parent story, except someone’s money. She was Lt Gov. for four years and I would wager that not more than 5% of the electorate recognizes her name.

Comment by Unle Ernie Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:20 am

  16. “I am running for Congress to keep the American dream alive…”

As a political job for yourself??? I don’t think there’s even a cart OR horse yet for that “drive”.

  17. >“Only in America can the child of teenage immigrants who grew up on food stamps ascend to college, law school, and become our country’s first Latina Lieutenant Governor

Candidate Sanguinetti, are you saying that you support government spending on socialist programs like food stamps for immigrants rather than get that money to Job Creators where it can do some real good?

Comment by Earnest Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:25 am

  18. ==energizing the crowd by speaking in Spanish.==

What’s she going to tell them in Spanish? “You don’t know me, but I did nothing for a governor you all hated”? “I’ll happily carry Trump’s water”?

Try having some small amount of respect for the intelligence of the Latino population. They care about more than just the language.

Comment by PJ Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:26 am

  19. ===Have you ever attended a campaign event that featured E.S? well I have. a lot of them in fact. And one of her staples is energizing the crowd by speaking in Spanish.===

Slip and Sue does magic too…

She has very little credibility if she wants to tie herself to the rejected Bruce Rauner, and decides the suburban district needs someone supporting Trump in Congress, as Trump is on the ballot too.

Casten couldn’t ask for better opponents than Oberweis, Skillicorn and Slip and Sue. All three are out of touch, just in different ways.

  22. OW,

You keep confusing the 6th and 14th CD? why is this so hard for you?

do we need a refersher for the class?

14th CD, represented by Lauren Underwood.
GOP primary contenders: Oberweis, Skillicorn, potentially Rezin but I think she lives in Kinzigers district, which would require her to move. (Someone can fact check that)

6th CD: Represented by Sean Casten
GOP Primary: Ol Slip and Sue as you like to call her

Comment by Iggy Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:34 am

  23. You are right. My apologies.

I think I keep making this mistake because Oberweis, Skillicorn and Sanguinetti are the reasons Illinois has Casten and Underwood, and no matter where those three run, they are the continued mistakes to why the GOP is not found (less Kinzinger) in the suburban congressional delegation.

My bad, thanks for calling me out.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:37 am

  24. It will be fascinsting to see how Rauner’s attempt to get out of the governor’s race impacts this:

    Did you know about it?

Did Rauner ask you to move up on the ticket?

Comment by The Way I See It Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:39 am

  25. The only child of teenage immigrants, who grew up on food stamps and went to college and law school (presumably with some government assistance) wants to bounce to another government payroll to fight the “progressives and socialists and expanded government.”

Cognitive dissonance is a heckuva drug.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:43 am

  26. OW,

No worries, I just don’t want to dilute the waters here.

I agree with you to a degree. Skillicorn and Oberweis offer no new ideas and have contributed to the shrinking influence of the GOP in Illinois. I am no fan of their decisions to run in the district which I call home.

Both the 6th and the 14th can be taken back but I am not excited about those running in the 14th. But I do believe Eveylin will most likely be the strongest person to run in the 6th. By the time 2020 rolls around not too many people will remember Bruce Rauner. And Nancy Pelosi’s ineffective leadership will mean that Sean Casten will be running on a record of nothing.

Comment by Iggy Monday, Apr 22, 19 @ 11:44 am

  27. ===By the time 2020 rolls around not too many people will remember Bruce Rauner.===

They’ll be reminding. Often. It’s all she has to run on, with experience.

    ===And Nancy Pelosi’s ineffective leadership…===

With respect, you can’t say that and ignore POTUS’ own issues in suburbia.

  31. - Pot calling kettle -

Rauner took over the ILGOP, as his past included supporting Forrest Claypool, donating to Dems, clouting his denied, suburban living daughter with the help of a Dem, and Evelyn was actively emailing folks to work in the Quinn Administration as an attorney.

Neither were (or are) Republicans, they both were (and are) opportunists that used windows of agreement to be shaded as 80% Reagan Rule Republicans… while wanting “no $&@#% problems” from Republicans unwilling to succumb to Raunerism.

She is a product of Raunerism that used the ILGOP party because it was weak enough to be bought.

She knows those beliefs don’t align. She thinks that people will forget Raunerism and POTUS.

Who knows, if someone offered her a job…

Tammy Duckworth lived outside of the district as well. Having just completed adjustments to her home to accommodate her needs, I don’t think anyone thought twice about her living a bit outside the district. The lines were quirky anyway and she lived nearby.
After this cycle they’ll change again. No reason to move until you realize where the new lines are.

  60. Perhaps it’s not likely to matter much as a political question, but can we revisit that bizarre response on tariffs? “… if people are paying less to be part of an organized agreement between nations, they should pay their fair share.” Anyone who responds to a question on tariffs with an answer on NATO probably knows little about either one. Her answer says a lot about her party, which once valued that anti-commie military alliance and reflexively despised every tax, especially something as anti-free-market as tariffs. Even apart from ambiguous core values… we’re talking about a Republican elected statewide in Illinois. And you don’t have an opinion on tariffs, farmers, job creation, outsourcing, etc? Anyone who has at least thought about private sector job creation would have some kind of response (or would at least recognize the question). Again, nobody in that district cares much about trade (or even NATO probably). But that this is who the Republicans worked so hard to draft as their candidate makes quite a statement.

So both Casten and Underwood are working to lessen constituents’ tax burden. How is that “support of increased taxes”? That is the opposite.
