It’s just a bill

* Capitol News Illinois

A bill that would ban for-profit immigrant detention centers in Illinois is on its way to Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

The Illinois Senate voted 34-14 on Thursday to pass House Bill 2020. It passed the House on April 10 by an 85-26 vote.

The bill would prohibit the state or any local unit of government from entering into any agreement to detain people in privately-owned facilities. It also prohibits them from spending any money to subsidize or defray the costs of developing or operating one. […]

The bill was introduced in response to a proposal to build a private federal detention center in the village of Dwight, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

* Let’s now move on to HB822

Allows a school to maintain a supply of glucagon in any secure location that is immediately accessible to a school nurse or delegated care aide

Dusty Rhodes has the story of how this bill came about

Last year, a school nurse in East Moline faced a moral dilemma when a diabetic student lost consciousness in her office. Now she’s trying to make sure no other school nurse has to face the same tough choice.

Low blood sugar can usually be cured with orange juice and a granola bar. But those snacks and glucose tabs weren’t helping the 7th grader sitting in Jennifer Jacobs’ office.

Go read the whole thing. You’ll be glad you did.

And now let’s move from “What a great story!” to “What the heck?”

A bill that would allow food stamp recipients to use SNAP vouchers at restaurants now heads to the governor’s desk.

The bill has passed both Illinois chambers. It now awaits Governor JB Pritzker’s signature.

HB3343, also known as the ‘Restaurant Meals Program’, would expand the options for food stamp users by allowing them to eat at certain restaurants.

Only SNAP benefit recipients who are disabled, elderly or homeless would qualify for the program.

Do better.

  3. Appreciate you calling out Sinclair’s racism.

Maybe Boris Epshteyn can issue an apology. /s

  4. Sinclair updated the photo from black folks to white folks. So, that’s what they took from your directive to “Do better.”

  6. As to the SNAP bill, I think it’s a good call.
Right now you can’t buy a “hot meal” or even most prepared meals at the grocery store.
There are a lot of folks who come to see us in this category. The homeless don’t have the ability to cook something usually. There are also many folks who don’t have the mobility or motor skills to fix food. This allows them to buy the “hot food” or prepared meals at the grocery store.
I’m being honest here. That’s what I see happening
    Not
    Going out to Olive Garden
    Remember
The Federal Government pays 100% of the cost of SNAP.
This isn’t coming from Illinois tax money.
Also please get out of the oppressive mindset that the homeless, disabled or elderly are grifters and getting away with something.
You have no idea how hard life is for some of these folks.
They sure don’t waste that benefit.
    They hunt sales like nobody.
No one can smell a bargain/sale from further off than someone from East St. Louis.
    They stretch those stamps.
This only allows those folks who have trouble preparing food, the chance to get prepared food.
Nobody is runnin game or getting one over

  7. “Do better”

They apparently did. The picture is now a bunch of white families in casual wear with their soft drinks.

  8. If the objective is to help feed people, allowing SNAP users to patronize “all you can eat buffets” seems like a no brainer.

  10. The McSweeney-Link township bill passed 44-3 in the Senate. That kind of bipartisan support for reform is scarce. Good job!

  11. Even with a picture of white people, how would you feel if your family happened to be the ones in the photo that Sinclair was using as an example?

And realistically, using SNAP on something like McDonald’s or Taco Bell, even even 7-11 hot dogs is probably a very cost efficient source of calories.
