* We’ve already discussed this topic, so I was pleased to see PolitiFact take it on today…
Citing remarks made in February by the governor of New York, [Rep. Mike Murphy, R-Springfield] claimed that when that state “implemented a program” to tax the wealthy at higher rates it saw a revenue shortfall “because of the outward migration of their top earners.”
Cuomo did raise the specter of out-migration among the state’s better-off taxpayers when personal income tax revenues came in below projections early this year. But he blamed the drop on fallout from the Republican federal tax overhaul of 2017 and other factors, not graduated income tax rates in New York which haven’t been raised in a decade.
What’s more, IRS data show the number of people filing with income greater than $200,000 in New York has increased every year since 2009 when New York raised rates on top earnings to levels similar to those currently under consideration in Illinois.
We rate Murphy’s claim False.
The piece also mentions that New York’s April personal income tax collections spiked 57 percent over last year.

Always a bizarro claim: “Rich flee areas where they are making a lot of money.”
It’s especially bizarre (and downright dishonest, among some of the Usual Suspects) here in Illinois, where the greatest, most visible to the eyeball migration has been from poor black neighborhoods in Chicago.
Somehow, the deep thinkers at the edit board of the World’s Greatest Newspaper missed that when it was happening right in front of them.

Alabama

Mississippi
just don’t have the amemities
and privilege
that wealthy Suburban Chicagoland does.

You mean the rich aren’t going to move to Mississippi for the excellent tax rates? It’s almost like people live in major urban areas for reasons other than how much it costs.

There are similar numbers for Illinois. I don’t have them on hand, but I believe Kiplinger has published a list using IRS data of how many millionaires are in each state. The number of IL millionaires has been steadily increasing for years - at least since the last tax increase and probably longer.

I’d be interested to see a response from Murphy, it would help determine just what kind of republican he is. Would he dispute this finding using his own sets of data, or just yell “fake news” and call them “liberul media”?

New York was impacted more by the feds implementing geographic targeting orders on real estate purchases, which meant those Russian and Chinese all-cash penthouse buyers could no longer remain anonymous and hide their assets in Manhattan real estate.

Why would you leave an environment where you are making a lot of money and doing well? The people who are leaving are the ones who can’t afford to live in Illinois anymore.

The Plains and the Midwest have been stuck with a persistent jet stream that has contributed to our extreme weather. It’s been largely in place since January and shows no signs of abating, which means we’ll probably continue to see large amounts of rain throughout the region.
In other words, this is not good and not getting better.

I know it’s anecdotal, but the only high earner I aware that’s leaving (Winnetka, for now) is BVR.

Many of the people from these areas vote Democratic and voted for Pritzker. They want solutions that don’t strip union rights and make big cuts to social programs. The state owes it to them to lower their tax burdens while not making big cuts. Thankfully now there’s a chance for that to happen.

No sarcasm intended. Murphy ran a pretty successful business in a small city for a long time, and the Sangamon county GOP has never been a bastion of the far-right. He’s not some gomer like Halbrook, and can presumably do more than spout Fox News talking points when someone confronts him with actual facts. Again, presumably.

==Murphy ran a pretty successful business== If you are referring to Charlie Parker’s, it had already been pretty successful before he bought it. He did some great work promoting the business, but it seemed like it became hard for him to hold on to employees. He also worked for Melocream for a while. Prior to that he ran a restaurant in Mattoon for a while I believe. That all being said, Mike has always been a political animal. He and his family are staunchly conservative. I don’t think he is an unintelligent man by any stretch of the imagination, but I would say he has been “trying on” some of this rhetoric we see from others in the party. If you presented Mike with the facts on New York he probably will acknowledge the data, but still point to another source or example to support this worn out argument of the fleeing of the rich. He has changed some since throwing his lot in with team Rauner, but I think some of that may fade after he gets his feet under him. With some time and experience you will see more subtlety from him as a Rep.

Thats ok, par for the he course in Springfield and pretty much what I was expecting. He’s political, sure, and he’ll do what he has to to mollify the base when needed, but he doesn’t strike me as a “gospel from Sean Hannity” republican like Halbrook and some of those other eastern bloc goofs. Thanks for the confirmation
