Republican State Senator Sue Rezin today filed the required statement of organization and declaration of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) to run for Congress in the 14th District of Illinois which Lauren Underwood won as a Democrat last fall.
Rezin’s campaign for Congress will begin organizing and raising funds immediately. A formal announcement of candidacy event will the held in the months to come.
Rezin has won every election she entered beginning with an upset victory in defeating longtime Illinois State Representative Careen Gordon who was an incumbent Democrat heavily backed by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s money and operation in a Tier One race. Previous to her race against Rezin, Gordon repeatedly won a series of tough election challenges. This is a seat Republicans have held ever since. Since then Rezin won reelection to the Illinois State Senate three times including two Tier One races against Christine Benson who is the sister of Chicago Democrat Congressman Mike Quigley.
Other GOP candidates include state Sen. Jim Oberweis and Rep. Allen Skillicorn. Rezin will be in the middle of a four-year term next year so she doesn’t have to give up her seat.

Underwood will have the healthcare card to play, again, as the Trumpkins are again in court trying to take away Obamacare.
My take on all this is why I grabbed what I grabbed.
The more Raunerite-types that can leave the GA the better.
Rezin is insulated from leaving the playing field.

From what I can tell, Rep. Underwood is doing a great or very good job. She stands for health insurance expansion and protections literally at a time that the Trump administration and many Republicans are trying to end the ACA via the courts, today at a federal appeals court. What is Candidate Rezin’s position on this lawsuit and the ACA?

Last time I checked the American health care system has not changed one iota since Rep. Underwood became elected. Co sponsoring house bills that die in the Senate are not real accomplishments, I look forward to seeing what she actually plans on running on.

Should Underwood sit back and do nothing but whine that she’s not in charge, like our former governor? She has a responsibility to work for her constituents. It would be malpractice for Underwood to make excuses for not trying to do what she was elected to do.

I personally would like most of the ACA eliminated. Pre existing conditions can stay in place.

You can’t have your healthcare cake and eat it too. If you want people with preexisting conditions to be covered, or not to be priced out of the market, you need measures in place to ensure/force more healthy people to the insurance markets.

Though that being said this race should be treated as a pure toss-up. IL-14 is the exact sort of suburban district that Trump has had trouble in, though he did win it in 2016. I want to say the first reelection bid is typically the hardest for incumbents too, and Presidential turnout won’t necessarily be to Underwood’s benefit if the electorate is more Republican-leaning than what turned out in the midterms; though midterm turnout was exceptionally high. I’m gonna be bullish on her odds, but it’ll be a race to watch like IL-13.

To add, beyond healthcare, Rezin going to have to answer questions about border detention camps, impeachment of the president, tariffs, war(?) with Iran, plus whatever other misguided policies from POTUS over the next 12+ months.
In short, Underwood just has to run against Trump policies instead of Rezin again.

Rezin led a state senate bill on preexisting conditions. Not going to be as easy for Underwood to demonize as other Republicans.
Rezin was also detested by top Rauner staff and defied them on a few high profile votes. Her record is mainstream conservative and of all the candidates including Underwood, Rezin most closely is in tune with the majority of voters.

We are *NOT* going to re-litigate folks like Ms. Rezin.
She wholly and completely supported Rauner’s hostage-taking by her switch.
You can “angry, despise” but when it mattered… Rezin like the Raunerites did, purposely hurt Illinois. That’s who she is.
If Ms. Rezin would like to apologize like former Rep. Breen did (then took it back, then lost, but I digress) I’ll look forward to that.
But, we’re not going to have these phony “oh, no, they were against Rauner”

Her entry in that race is positively disruptive. The DC R’s have been urging her for some time to get in. She’ll get some help from them I would guess. That should definitely be an R Seat. The mood of the country will have an impact there.

Ending Medicaid expansion and taking health insurance away from the poor and sick? While giving massive tax cuts to the rich? See you in church (in honor of Wordslinger).
In some or many countries, private and public health insurance coexist. Too bad we as Americans don’t sit down and work hard to come up with the best possible system, even if it involves some private health insurance. Instead we have many who loathe compulsory health insurance of any kind, even if it’s mostly private insurance, and people who hate private insurance.

For those that think the ACA is a great option, I challenge you to give up your insurance for 1year and go on the ACA. I’m not talking about the Medicaid expansion either.
Pay the overpriced premium, for a plan that has a $5,000 deductible and a $1,000 fee for er. It’s not as nice as the insurance plan that government employees have. But it’s the plan that I have now and thankful that I haven’t had to use it.
Changes need to be made, but the proposals from the republicans are not consumer friendly either.

OPope - I’ve been on the ACA. Definitely hear you that it can be expensive and isn’t as nice as employer/government plans. But, man, that thing saved my behind when I needed health care (I’d have been out way more than the, yes, expensive premiums and deduct). Not to mention that, without the ACA, I wouldn’t have been able to get insurance at any price because of a pre-exisiting condition.
I would welcome improvements, but it’s saved people’s lives and saved them from bankruptcy. (I get very defensive of it.)

Sue Rezin is a Center-right conservative who will appeal to suburban moms, as she is a wife, mother and businesswoman, unlike Underwood. She’s a great campaigner with a track record of winning in a swing district. She’s the smart choice in this R primary.

“Sue Rezin is an apologetic Raunerite who will be reminded how her votes consistently hurt suburban moms, mothers and businesswomen, unlike Underwood who didn’t hurt folks at the behest of Bruce Rauner. She’s going to have to campaign with a track record of hurting Illinois to crush organized labor. She’s a choice in this R primary that will be reminded of her past hurtful votes”.
