Illinois may not be flying high in its standing with the public, but Gov. JB. Pritzker is.
A new poll — dubbed the Illinois Issues Survey — conducted by the University of Illinois-Springfield Survey Research Office shows that nearly six out of 10 state residents have a positive view of how Pritzker is conducting himself as governor.
OK, first of all, this is an online poll, so I wouldn’t jump to any hard conclusions just yet.
Secondly, I’ve heard some GOP grumbling about how the partisan universe in the Illinois Issues Survey is way more favorable to Gov. Pritzker than other polls: 53 percent Democratic vs. 30 percent Republican. That’s a +23D universe. By contrast, Gallup’s polling last year had Illinois at +16D. The Simon Poll’s most recent survey this spring had Illinois at +12D. That spring poll had Pritzker’s job approval at 40 and his disapproval at 38.
Even so, if you apply Gallup’s partisan makeup to the Illinois Issues Survey, you still get a 58 percent job approval rating for Pritzker. It’s a 57 percent approval rating if you apply the Simon Poll partisan universe.
According to the Illinois Issues Survey, Pritzker experienced a 14-point increase in his approval rating among Democrats vs. the Simon Poll, which is to be expected after the session he had. But he also saw an 18-point increase among independents (31 to 49) and more than a doubling of his approval rating among Republicans, which skyrocketed from 15 to 32. I dunno.
Again, this is an online poll and I’m not yet sold on that methodology.

A broad majority of Illinois voters support major changes to the state income tax, favoring a system where the wealthy pay more. That’s according to new survey data from NPR Illinois and the University of Illinois Springfield.
The survey says 67 percent of registered Illinois voters support a graduated income tax. That’s where people who earn more money pay a higher tax rate, and people who earn less pay a lower rate.
Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker made the proposal a centerpiece of both his campaign and his freshman legislative session. Given that, it’s not surprising the plan enjoys widest support among Democrats and independents who lean Democratic (79%). Next are non-leaning independents (59%), and finally Republicans and independents who lean Republican (49%).
Since the polling universe skews so high for Democrats, this is not a surprising result. Also, while the result is in line with several Simon Poll results over the years, support is now ten points higher than the 2018 Illinois Issues Survey.

I’m a “Republican-leaning independent,” but I am quite happy with JB so far. Of course, his predecessor set an awfully low bar. Maybe this is the political equivalent of how good you feel after you stop beating your head against a wall.

Same, so far. Great legislative accomplishments and it’s only the first year. There was bipartisan event held the other day by a data center company, to commemorate the new tax incentives for the data center industry. Here is a great quote from the company’s CEO, who was at the event:
“We congratulate Governor Pritzker, the General Assembly, the labor-business coalition, and many others who had the foresight to appreciate how important these incentives are to retain and attract data center business to the great state of Illinois.”

I agree. I was a left wing liberal Democrat growing up and became a center right independent.
I like 95% of what Governor Pritzker has done and a totally against 5%. I think with that he has done a great job.

Rich, I’m with you on the methodology skepticism. Online polls are notoriously flawed. At least it came from UIS and not a paid pollster. They could have developed a methodology that is defensible.

Of course most people think the rich should pay more and pay their “fair share.” When stats are listed, such as the top 1% pay a greater share of individual income taxes than the bottom 90 percent combined. Or, the top 50% of all taxpayers pay 97% of all individual income taxes, they are dumbfounded.
The state is reporting an increase in tax revenue—well, of course they are. And you know what? That is money from taxpayers who don’t have it available to spend and spur the economy.

As noted, and can be seen, since the Eisenhower administration, the wealthiest of this country have seen the biggest cuts and in that are paying far less, and as a Trumpkin, you know the wealthiest also saw the biggest cuts, by design.
My own Republican background and thoughts find trouble in the politics of trying to find majority votes when the obvious thing economically happening is defending the 1%, while also being angry at anyone not “like me”
The Trumpkins have done two things incredibly well;
Made the wealthy really-really wealthy.
Convince the angry, old, white, rural folks it’s anyone unlike them to blame for that wealth change.

Those focused solely on the amount are apologists for the wealthy ensuring they will stay wealthy and removed from those “not like them”
Concern for the amount is small minded myopathy.
“Wow, look at that amount”
Or…
“Look at all the shiny quarters”
… neglecting so much being withheld while farmers, Reagan Democrats, suburban families hurt most.

Whats not to like about the job JB is doing. Hes fulfilling his campaign promise to raise taxes without finding any elusive waste, fraud or abuse.

To the Post,
Positive politics helps generate positive thoughts for those politicians.
With that passed agenda, and an agenda deemed a “positive” agenda to move Illinois forward… how can this not give a positive spin to the Governor.
I have no idea what real numbers look like, I do believe in the premise that positive governing will lead to positive feelings for the governing.
The Illinois GOP, the party looking for a 51st state and nary a pol calling that out publicly, it won’t be a drubbing in 2020 because of a “blue state” bend, it’s truly because this state’s GOP refuses to focus on people, families, positives, and recognizing all of Illinois is better as a whole than what others see as best parts in angry regions.
This polling, bad as it might be, shows me that uniting a state is happening, and the ILGOP is an obstacle, not a leader, in that movement.
Where can the ILGOP hope to find leaders that see these failings when those who think they are those leaders let secession be a party discussion.
The ILGOP should take some soul-searching time during this petition season to decide who they want carrying its banner.

The ILGOP did something really good this year: work to pass bipartisan legislation. That would seem like a way to get in better with voters in this state—work with colleagues from across the aisle to improve people’s lives instead of just obstructing and waging war.

Hmm, Willy, Trumpkins??? 50 year low unemployment rate, wages are up, manufacturing jobs are way up(Trump waved that magic wand and brought them back) record low unemployment for Blacks, Hispanics, Women.
Your talking points are way off. I listed factual stats on how much the wealthy pay in taxes. They carry the water and do the heavy lifting. Don’t hate people for being successful.

You went out of your way to call President Obama by the name Barry.
The rest ignores farmers filing for bankruptcy and places like Fort Campbell losing a Junior High because POTUS wants money for a wall that Mexico isn’t paying for.
Ask the Kurds, today, how great America is.
Our place in the world, our word in the world means nothing.
Trumpkins see anger, pretend things are better “here” or “incredible” there, but in the end, racism and supporting it isn’t pretty.

Small minded folks see shiny quarters as “a lot”
Percentages and those changes, that’s where the loses of real money is happening.
How do I know?
That was the change the 1%ers wanted. They got it.

One of these days, Gov “He Leads” will actually need to stand against his party’s leadership for the good of Illinois. That day is not today. Congrats on the victory lap and trophy poll.
