*** UPDATED x2 - Sandoval submitted chairmanship resignation letter *** Sandoval’s chairmanship appears to have been yanked

Posted in:

* A commenter mentioned this earlier and I checked with the Senate Democrats a few times and haven’t yet heard back. Here’s Hannah…

**** New: Per https://t.co/3VNkqvIolZ, Marty Sandoval is no longer listed as the chair of the Transportation Committee, just a member. His bio says he's a chair of…nothing? pic.twitter.com/EzK3Hvtw8B

However, Sen. Tom Cullerton, who was indicted on over 40 federal counts, still has his chairmanship, according to the ILGA website.

*** UPDATE 1 *** From John Patterson with the Senate Democrats: “We received a resignation letter from Sen. Sandoval” regarding the chairmanship.

I’ll post that when I get it.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Here’s the letter dated today…

  1. Sandoval was stinking up a major achievement of the governor. At this point Cullerton seems isolated?

  2. Patterson,

You’re better than this. IT blunder or not, poorly timed news dump or not, you knew the play and let the intertubes dictate your timing.

    This isn’t great.

  3. Leader Brady’s comment yesterday must have spooked Sandoval. LOL

  4. Good riddance. We need to move forward with the capital plan which will be great for this state.

  5. Agree with OW. There’s too many scandals and investigations to not know how to handle this. I won’t call it a major blunder, but it’s a self-inflicted trip.

  6. OW and AFN — Patterson can only deliver the information he has. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

This lies with Cullerton and it’s the third time he’s blundered a major issue with a member. First was Silverstein and referring the complaint about him to an email address for an inspector general that didn’t exist. Second was Tom Cullerton and keeping his chairmanship after an indictment. Third was releasing a redacted search warrant.

  7. Appointing committee Member Castro as Chairperson would be a great move. Why? Bc having a member of the Legislative Ethics Commission to replace the former chair that appears to have ethics issues and the attention of the FBI, would be a great move by Cullerton.

  8. ===Patterson can only deliver the information he has. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.===

The IT folks not only knew before Patterson, they decided to remove the chairmanship without John knowing?

    That benefit of a doubt?

I dunno if that’s how I’d defend this, given that this all could’ve been easily rolled out by having the Press Shop release the info and IT then respond.

I’m being generous as it is.

  9. BTW, What is a “Sub-Chairperson”?

Also, Sandoval is still Chair of Special Com. On Supplier Diversity. How is that a good idea?

  10. More interested in seeing who will be named to take his place on transportation.

  11. ===Also, Sandoval is still Chair of Special Com. On Supplier Diversity. How is that a good idea?===

I, for one, look forward to that being covered in the (inevitable) made-for-tv movie about all this.

  12. How about his leadership position?

Comment by Leadership Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 12:00 pm

  13. A day late and a dollar short.

Keeping with the theme of Rich’s column, the conflict of leaving Sandoval as chair got hotter than the conflict of tossing him out. Sadly, but deservedly Cullerton’s reputation takes a hit over this affair.

  14. Appointing Senator Castro will be bring integrity to the Transportation chairmanship.

  15. Steve Landek is a role model for all state senators to follow. It would be great if he were the chairman of the transportation committee.

  16. –Also, Sandoval is still Chair of Special Com. On Supplier Diversity. How is that a good idea?–

You have to admit this is a diverse group of shady characters here…

  17. –Steve Landek is a role model for all state senators to follow. It would be great if he were the chairman of the transportation committee.–

A certain flash drive just put that out of the realm of possibility for the time being.

  18. This has been what the Brits call “an own goal”.

    A pretty flagrant unforced error.

I wonder how quickly the Exelon outside Director’s team will find and forward “interesting stuff” to the FBI….

  19. Sandoval (sincerely): “Thank you for your attention to this matter.” LOL

  21. “Good riddance.”

Sandoval may be gone but the culture that nurtured this type of behavior remains.

Comment by Donnie Elgin Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 1:12 pm

  22. Definition of irony? Sandoval is Chair of Supplier Diversity and may be going down due to his alleged dealings with a major supplier in the construction sector….who is white.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 1:58 pm

  23. The Senate President’s Press Shop is awfully quiet.

    This really isn’t that tough.

Patterson should be able to release a pithy word or three now with the letter released.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 2:43 pm

  24. The TCullerton shuffling of committee chairs got a bit messy within the Dem caucus. I suspect JCullerton will ask a member of his paid leadership team to temporarily take the Transportation gavel, just as Harmon picked-up judiciary chair duties when Mulroe left for the bench. BTW, the Revenue chair is vacant too with Toi’s departure.
