*** UPDATED x2 *** Sanguinetti bows out of congressional race

Posted in:

* From Evelyn Sanguinetti via a campaign spokesperson…

It is with deep regret that I must announce that I have officially decided to end my campaign for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Congress for the 6th Congressional District of Illinois. I want to thank everyone that supported me through volunteering, financial contributions, and words of encouragement and support. I am sorry if this announcement lets you down.

Although I firmly believe that I can and will win the nomination if I stayed in the race, the question in my mind is at what cost. There has been enough destruction in the Republican Party from past election cycles, and I choose not to contribute further to it by engaging in a costly and negative campaign against my opponents. I wish the remaining candidates all the best, and I encourage all Republicans to unite behind the eventual nominee for the good of the Party and more importantly the Nation as we continue the fight to stop socialism and to protect the American Dream for future generations.

That pretty much clears the deck for Jeanne Ives, who reported raising $340,298.13 during her first quarter in the race.

*** UPDATE 1 *** Greg Hinz

A source who would know tells me she raised only about $50,000 in the third quarter—a paltry figure by any measure, and certainly well under the $340,000 Ives garnered.

Yeesh.

*** UPDATE 1 *** DCCC…

DCCC spokesperson Andy Orellana released the following statement after NRCC touted recruit Evelyn Sanguinetti announced she was dropping out of the Republican primary in Illinois 6th Congressional District:

“Today’s announcement that Evelyn Sanguinetti will be dropping out of the Republican primary in Illinois’s 6th Congressional District underscores just how toxic the Trump agenda is in communities across the country. While firebrand conservative Jeanne Ives campaigns on her promise to be a rubber stamp for the Trump agenda of sowing division between neighbors, higher taxes for homeowners, and skyrocketing health care costs for families, Sean Casten is focused on delivering for Illinois families.”

  8. That sure makes re-elect easier for Casten.
Slip and Sue was not a good candidate, but she was far better than Ives.

The race though points to a problem that the ILGOP has to face.

Sanguinetti would have had a very tough time in the primary. GOP primary voters would likely have preferred Ives. They like to blame Madigan for everything, but yet they put up the likes of Ives for competitive seats.

Comment by Gooner Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 1:29 pm

  9. My condolences Willy on having your joke supply cut short.

Hadn’t been following closely but was it a lack of money or support issue? Say want you want about Ives but she has some rabid support. Some would say literally.

  10. It was clear from the very beginning, Jeanne Ives was going to eat her lunch. I think I predicted Sanguinetti out by the first of the year. I thought she would at least make it through Halloween, though.

Slip and Sue was magical, that’s true. I kinda feel sorry for her. My hope is in an Onion-Like rebirth she’ll be appointed to the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission as a a commissioner or a legal counsel, that press release writes itself.

  15. If Rauner and allies had come through with the funds she’d still be in the race. Kind of eye-opening that they’re not.

Also, primaries are different from generals but Rauner has largely funded the state leg efforts for the last few cycles, it has to be a concern to them that he isn’t helping his Lt. Gov now, will he be there for the SGOP & HGOP next year?

Comment by The Captain Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 1:45 pm

  16. I remember once my mom was frothing about how Rauner should be impeached and removed from office. I said, “You think we’d do better under Governor Sanguinetti?” My mom said, “Who?”

They broke the ILGOP, they are careless people. They will leave it to others to fix it.

  34. Sanguinetti ran for 6 months. I’m with the majority that fundraising did her in, even though DCCC announced a slight drop off in fundraising for Casten in Q3: $700K instead of Q2 $734K

Now it’s Ives vs. Dr. Kinzler in 6th primary, and Ives raised over $340K in 75 days.

  38. So 145 people plus ViewPAC listed on Evelyn Sanguinetti’s website endorsing her. Plus 2 months ago she was named an NRCC “On the Radar” in the Young Gun program.

Goes to show you, lots of people on an endorsement list does not guarantee money. Warning to Jim Oberweis, and I wouldn’t pencil him in yet for next November, given Ted Gradel, Sue Rezin and Catalina Lauf.

  41. Reminder, though she’s ending her campaign, Sanguinetti must still file her Q3 report, so we’ll see how her fundraising really went. Greg Hinz at Crain’s calling out how “quiet” Sanguinetti had been, especially after Ives announced her 3rd quarter receipts last week was telling.

In 14th, Lauf is still barnstorming media, Oberweis has a DC fundraiser with Marco Rubio and Francis Rooney on Wednesday, and Rubio in IL at end of month. Rezin is expected to report strong fundraising too.

  44. Not too terribly surprising. Barring impeachment Republicans will be running with Trump at the top of the ticket. They’ll endure endless questions about whether or not they support the president’s agenda and will tie themselves in knots trying to deal with the elephant in the room. But not Jeanne Ives. She’ll have no problem embracing anything and everything connected to Trump. If you think your prospects might be better down the road this is a good cycle to sit on the sidelines.

Comment by Pundent Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 3:05 pm

  45. I agree with OW, though a semi credible candidate in the 10 person Senate primary would begin to clear field. What little she raised for the 6th could put her in fundraising lead in Senate primary.

Ives helped eradicate Rauner. That’s about it. Everything else she’s stood up for, including that ad she ran that helped take down Rauner is nauseating.

  56. This is a political blog with (mostly) politically aware people who keep up with the cast of characters on both sides of the aisle. It’s always good to remember that the vast majority of Illinoisans probably couldn’t have told you who the previous Lt. Gov. even was. This no name candidacy by Sanguinetti for congress was doomed to fail.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 4:29 pm

  57. - Streator Curmudgeon -

    Friend, it’s Friday.

All the damage Rauner did, a parody song ain’t much.

    Be well.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 4:31 pm

  58. Responsa, what Sanguinetti’s departure really says is running for Congress is something you don’t do like a county board or state legislative race. This is the big leagues, and you have to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to be competitive in a primary, and millions to be competitive and win a general.

Look at Catalina Lauf in the 14th. No one heard of her 2 months ago, yet in 38 days she raised over $100,000 and will be competitive in the primary. Oberweis and Gradel will be, too, and Sue Rezin should be.

There are 2-3 candidates in the 14th that better look at Sanguinetti and see that even after raising around $150,000 over a 6-month period, she had to drop out, and the 2-3 better think that way, too, unless they have a stellar 3rd quarter fundraising.

Comment by John Lopez Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 4:36 pm

  59. I thought that the conservative primary vote would split between Ives and Kinzler, helping Sanguinetti win the primary with 35%.

Comment by Conservative Veteran Friday, Oct 11, 19 @ 4:43 pm
