The day after his Super Tuesday success, former Vice President Joe Biden picked up the endorsements of three Illinois U.S. House members, his campaign announced Wednesday.
U.S. Reps. Bill Foster, Robin Kelly and Mike Quigley are all backing Biden. The surging Democratic contender continues to pick up support among Illinois’ elected officials ahead of the state’s March 17 primary.
“In Chicago, we know something about toughness and resilience, and nobody embodies that spirit more than Joe Biden,” Quigley said in a release. “On all the issues that matter most in our community, Joe has been fighting beside us for decades.” […]
The three House members follow Illinois U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White in throwing their support to Biden in recent days. He also has the backing of U.S. Reps. Danny Davis and Brad Schneider.

Michael Bloomberg, who spent hundreds of millions of dollars to self-fund his 2020 presidential run, announced Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign after a poor performance on Super Tuesday, according to a source familiar.
He’s endorsing Biden.

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Jesse Sharkey and Vice President Stacy Davis Gates today announced their personal endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ candidacy for president of the United States.
“Educators in Chicago’s public schools fight for their students, and their students’ families and communities. No other candidate has put forth a better plan to make that fight a reality than Bernie Sanders,” CTU President Jesse Sharkey said. “Not only will Bernie fight for our students and their families, but he reflects the core values and mission of our union. Bernie is part of a movement that is putting students and working families above the interests of millionaires and billionaires, and that is something we should all be fighting for. On March 17, I plan on voting for Sen. Sanders, and I urge every Illinois voter to do the same.”
“The Chicago Teachers Union has always fought to make big changes,” said CTU Vice President Stacy Davis Gates. “Collectively, we have fought against racial and economic disparities, attempts to close and privatize our public schools, and powerful special interests. In May 2019, Sanders unveiled his Thurgood Marshall Plan for Public Education, which will reinvest in our nation’s schools and modernize our education system.

Are presidential campaigns over? Feels like both Trump and Biden are showing you can do the whole thing with just earned media, and stuff like advertising, a ground game, all that traditional campaign stuff - is not needed.

Good on you Rich for making that ad money. Bloomberg has so much money to spend.
Biden was leading in the polls to begin with, and then he slipped. Now he’s found “equilibrium.” He’s back to being the frontrunner, thanks in large part to South Carolina African-American voters.
Illinois Democrats are staying with one of their own, a fellow Democrat. Loyalty can mean a lot. Last night Bernie was attacking the establishment (not a good way to win friends and influence people). Voters themselves and not “the establishment” had the biggest influence in reshaping the race last night.

What “happened” was … South Carolina.
Iowa and New Hampshire are now 3rd tier “carnie rides”… for Democrats, the South Carolina primary put into clear focus how diversity lets top choices show real strength.
To bring this all back to Illinois-centric… I’d like to see Bloomberg keep EVERY office, staffer every part of his infrastructure in place and use that to not only help defeat Trump, but defeat Trumpkins in both chambers of Congress.
If Bloomberg does that, even in place like Illinois, then the half a billion spent will be worth every penny.

I saw a Warren ad on TV this morning. Hard to figure out why she’s continuing to hang on. If she does intend to hold out until 3/17 it will only make things that more difficult for Sanders. Not much to be gained at this point given her showing.

Biden will be the nominee. I honestly don’t know why Sen. Warren or Tulsi Gabbard are still in. If I was Warren, I would accept reality and endorse Bernie Sanders, since their views align. She’ll spoil it for Bernie if she doesn’t.

After the success of Rainer, JB and Trump getting elected, I figured Bloomberg’s run was at least partly ego driven. I also figured his other goal was to get enough delegates that he could serve as a power broker at the Democrat convention. So I’m a bit surprised at his announcing support for Biden now instead of waiting for the convention. Guess this is Plan B … overwhelm everyone else before the convention.

I don’t think Illinois has played a key role in the Democratic nomination process since 1992, so I’m glad my primary vote will matter this year.
I appreciate LP’s concern, but I tend to dismiss his advice for my party. Lol. As for Senator Sanders, according to NPR, his surge of young voters didn’t materialize.
“Before Tuesday, voters younger than 30 were not keeping pace with the overall increase in voter turnout. In fact, young voters’ share of the electorate went down in three of the first four states compared with 2016.
On Tuesday night, not a single state saw an increase in young voters’ share of the electorate, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research and sponsored by several of the television networks.”

Over the weekend, a woman from the Warren campaign knocked on our door and asked for our support in the primary.

It was, for the 2008 primary season, the IL GA pushed up the primary to first Tuesday in February and joined Super Tuesday to boost then Senator Barack Obama’s presidential prospects.
After the 2010 midterm primary, the IL GA changed the Illinois primary back to the 3rd Tuesday in March.

Having seniors spend a long day mingling with all manner of people, passing materials back and forth with them, while confined in a polling place seems… ill-advised.

I was a Mayor Pete guy. I thought he made some really sound points about democrats in statewide house and senate races having to explain or defend the policies of a progressive at the top of the ticket. However, I have 0 faith that Biden could win a general election. I don’t think he’ll have as much of a polarizing effect on the house and senate races as Bernie would, and perhaps that’s a net positive for democrats nationwide, but I have little faith he has the stamina to deliver strong performances from now until November.

I think mrjayem and pundent misunderstand Steve’s point, which is that the premise of the defenders of the law overturned by Citizens United was that without the law, corporations would simply buy elections, and that premise is disproved by recent events. I think Steve is wrong - these events show only that you cannot buy an election for someone with no intrinsic appeal.

Does anyone want to guess how many zombie campaigns will be represented on the Illinois primary ballot?
Also, this season is something of an argument against early voting in primaries–people drop out so frequently and suddenly that many early voters end up expending their vote on a nonviable candidate.

This whole process reminds me that Illinois needs to be at the front of the nomination process, not an afterthought. Why do South Carolina or Texas - states that never go democratic in presidential elections- determine our nominee? It allows the corporate wing of the DNC to pick yet another centrist who will do very little and have all their progress quickly unravelled by the next republican in office.
Meanwhile, the republicans never fail to make major changes that have massive lasting impacts.

Sharkey and Davis Gates’ endorsements are good for Bernie, but it underlines the actual union isn’t backing him (or anyone). The union endorsement isn’t just something to put in an ad - its money and feet on the ground. Bernie could use those as the center rallies around Biden.

You did notice that California, Massachusetts, Virginia, Minnesota, and Colorado were all part of Super Tuesday as well, right? All states that typically (at this point in time) go Dem.

I put up some Warren signs yesterday and am planning to continue to contact voters from now through the election. All signs are that she is still a go. Warren seems to have a fairly robust operation in Illinois. Will that translate into delegates? Time will tell…

I will be interested in the turn out for both the Democratic and Republican primaries in Illinois. Given that Trump is largely running unopposed across America his primary vote totals have been significant. Rolling Stone did an article on this a few days ago and Trump amassed a significant vote in Texas. Trump’s supporters are making a point of voting for him in the primaries. Even in overwhelmingly Democrat California no more than 48% of registered Democrats are likely to have voted when all the votes are counted. There are over 9 million formally registered Democrats in California according to the Ca Sec of State. In Illinois we have just over 8 million voters in total according to the IL State Board of Elections. In the 2016 primary the turn out was only around 47%, Of those who voted 1,460,341 took Republican ballots of those votes Trump received 562,464 votes in Illinois in the primary. Watch Trump’s primary vote totals in Illinois if they are within even 20% of the combined primary votes for Sanders and Biden the Democrats are in trouble for the general election.

It’s reported that in Texas and in other states, Democratic primary voter turnout increased as well, in record numbers in Utah and Virginia. Lots of people voting is a great thing.

To several posts: Received two mailers from Bloomberg’s campaign today in the south suburbs of Chicago. Wondering if the primaries/caucuses should all be held the same day. Repubs and Independents may be pulling Cook County Dem ballots to vote for Conway for State’s Attorney; a primary win will likely end Foxx’s run. Anybody notice California’s Dem results; at one point some 25% voted for “other”. Also, why hasn’t Warren suspended her campaign being so far behind?
