  1. As I pet the belly for the third time already this morning, I reminded my cat that she would never have made it as a wild animal. No matter what that bobcat cat food commercial says. She rolled over and stretched so I could get the other side.

  2. Fish are biting. Weather is supposed to get more seasonal towards the end of this week into next. Going to unwrap the boat and see if I can get enough for a big fish fry when this is all past.

  3. Plan to get a walk in with my Eteaching wife before the rain hits. Enjoy the day!

  4. I don’t know if other areas are doing it but I appreciate our grocery stores & Walmart having a special hour for seniors & other vulnerable populations to shop. Also like the churches posting online services &/or sermons as well as offering help to those needing it. Thanks to everyone that helps in any way.

  5. Topics: 1) Thanks Rich, for all your hard work at keeping people up to date without having to watch hours of “news” to get 5 minutes worth of information. 2) Spring? Had frost on my car and neighbor’s roofs this morning (burb just over south Chicago border). 3) Sports: Can you imagine sports overload when everything starts again at the same time? Baseball will be using snowballs to play in January, and overlap the NFL big time unless MLB slashes the schedule (and revenues).

  6. Marquis Sports is replaying the Cubs 2016 playoff run to the World Series. Love it, except it is a painful reminder of how much I hate Joe Buck.

Also, for a variety of reasons, I had not yet seen ESPN’s 30 for 30 on the 1985 Bears. Imagine how excited I was on Sunday, with plenty of time to dig into this on ABC7. Then the Governor broke in…

  7. Kenny Rogers. RIP

Comment by Otter Typo Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:29 am

  8. Let’s all get ready for a virtual opening day. Go stand in the old….drink a lot beer with some shots on the side. Puke on the curb. GOOOOOO Cards

Comment by Annonin Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:31 am

  9. @lakeside -

Whoever said cats don’t like belly rubs was never owned by a cat.

Comment by JoanP Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:31 am

  10. Went down to Tennessee the week before last for a funeral, I was amazed at how green everything was. Flowers and bushes were all blooming, the leaves we’re popping out on the trees - hopefully it will get here soon. The changing of our current gray and brown landscape might help lift everyone’s spirits.

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:32 am

  11. I’ve been spending the time posting old photos to a few Facebook groups that ban political topics … a car club one I won’t name (if you know me, you know which one), Illinois Abandoned Images, and Memories of Springfield.

Comment by RNUG Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:34 am

  12. I was gonna talk about Bears free agency, but then I remembered Rich said to keep it to happy talk…🤢

Comment by Boomerang Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:34 am

  13. Might be a good weekend to get out and look for some morels in Southern Illinois.

Comment by Birdseed Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:35 am

  14. One happy thing I’ve noticed during all this is how much nicer everyone has been. Grocery stores, gas stations, heck even on my daily walks I seem to just be passing by and interacting with friendly people. It’s really, really lifted my spirits to see how much we can really come together as a community when times are tough on all of us.

    I love it

  15. 75 degrees and sunny on Thursday down here.
    I’ll be mowing this weekend.

  16. I’m strangely obsessed with finding some seed potatoes and getting at least one thing planted in my garden. I have flower and vegetable seeds but of course way too early. I found a type of parsley that has an edible root to try this year. Had never seen it before.

Comment by Earnest Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:40 am

  17. Watched the Tiger King on Netflix. I’ve never seen a circus like that before.

  18. @Otter, how is The Gambler passing up to the big poker game in the sky “happy” , cmon bro…happy as in -”it’s NOT snowing”;-)

  20. For those missing baseball, archive.org has recordings of classic games (radio) from 1934 to 1970-something. I’ve already listened to a couple and enjoyed the heck out of it.

  21. @ Interim Retiree
I think the special hours for seniors and “at risk” persons are great. But I wish they would have them later in the day. I’m just crawling out of bed at 8:00AM.

Comment by Behind the Scenes Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 9:59 am

  22. I went for a lovely walk yesterday. A bit chilly, but the sun was out. We walked around the Museum of Science and Industry, and on the way back learned something.

There was a small plaque on a bit of green space, marking the place where Frederick Douglass opened the Haitian Pavilion at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. I had not known that he did that.

Comment by JoanP Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 10:05 am

  23. American Gangster is worth watching just for the confrontation/conversation between Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe at the end. I mean, it would be a great movie without that. It’s a taut thriller with a great script and a great story. Its cast includes four Oscar winners and four Oscar nominees.

But that ten or so minutes between Washington and Crowe lifts it above merely great and into immortality. Two Best Actor winners, at the top of their games, the drug lord vs. the narcotics cop, sparring and boxing, each man taking the measure of the other.

Looking for a movie to watch while stuck at home? Try American Gangster.

Similarly, I often remind our dog he is a descendant of wolves while he licks my face or pounces on a defenseless stuffed armadillo.

  26. == But I wish they would have them later in the day. I’m just crawling out of bed at 8:00AM. ==

Doesn’t bother me. I used to get up between 5 and 6 when I was working. I still wake up then without an alarm most days and I’ve been retired 17+ years.

  27. Haven’t done this many pushups since high school…

  28. Fiji Water–

Yesterday I was thinking about how hard the employees in Walmart and grocery stores are working. They don’t get the credit that healthcare workers do, but their work is equally important, keeping us supplied with food during this crisis.

The ones I have encountered have been remarkably calm and courteous. Good on them.

  29. I have robins on the front lawn and they’re finding worms.

  31. Going for a long walk listening to an episode of This American
Life has become the best hour of my day. Thank you Ira Glass.

  32. Skeptic: That sounds great. Where on archive.org would I find those games that you described?

Comment by SouthSide Markie Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 10:20 am

  33. So, the Bears letting Leonard Floyd go and signing Robert Quinn is interesting.

While it definitely looks like an upgrade, it is another reminder that Pace’s drafting is not as good as it should be.

Comment by Gooner Tuesday, Mar 24, 20 @ 10:21 am

  34. @ - Behind the Scenes

I think the idea behind early hours is that the store has been somewhat cleaned overnight, and that’s the best time for someone of higher risk to go.

  35. @Earnest, share about the type of parsley with the edible root, please. also I’m looking for the peas that are container grown on a small bush. does anyone know what that kind is?

  37. to paraphrase Shakespeare: Our winter of discontent is concluding–made glorious summer by this sun of Illinois. In other words, I’m anxious to get my garden started. I’ll plant tomato seeds indoors–usually at tax day, then they’re nice and ready to go outdoors about mother’s day. Grass is starting to turn green and daffodils are blooming.

  47. Thank you Skeptic. OMG, what a wonderful website. I’m getting to relive a little bit of the Cubs of ‘69 and as a typical Cubs fan, hoping that it turns out differently. LOL

  48. When I go out for a run and greet strangers with some version of “How are you doing?” I actually want to know and get the feeling that they actually want to know when they ask how I’m doing.
