  4. Every time I’m feeling a little down, I remind myself of what this would have been like to go through in the 70’s or 80’s, with limited television and no internet. Things don’t seem quite so bad.

We have power, water, and food. It could be a whole lot worse.

  5. Doing fine here. Unanticipated result of self quarantine - saving quite a bit of cash not going out.

  6. Doing OK but for some of us who are trying to keep our organization’s membership informed and up-to-date on what they should be doing, the drumbeat of negative information is starting wear on us.

As human service providers our members are worried for the people they serve and their staff who are on the front lines. What we are starting to see is people just beat down and giving up hope as to when “normal” could somewhat return. There really does not seem to be light at the end of the tunnel in terms of the stay at home order issue, and that is going to be an issue we all have to deal with.

  7. One household birthday was yesterday and the other is next week - we are trying to make the best of it with virtual dinners and cocktail hours with friends. If you haven’t tried at least virtual cocktails with friends, I highly recommend it :) .

  8. I miss my coworkers and staff. Yes, even the complainers. I didn’t realize how much I would miss the constant hum of their voices outside of my office. I’m looking forward to saying good morning to them…in person.

  9. Or 1918, Downstate. Must have been so terrifying not knowing what was happening. (Tho it is also terrifying to know what’s happening.)

We are ok. In fine health. Have finally, finally gotten 74yo mother to stay in her house, except for walks. She had workers there to redo her shower as recently as Wednesday. Pro-tip for anyone trying to do the same - absolutely cracking it and telling her that I wouldn’t see her and didn’t want her dying alone in a ventilator while crying was the only thing that worked. Joy.

Side note to non-compliant elders - you are breaking your kids’ brains in an already stressful time. Please, please stay home.

Hmm, ‘ok’ may have been optimistic. Have a great weekend everyone.

  12. As good as can be expected. Miss seeing the grandkids in person.

Yesterday to my amazement, I looked outside, and who do I see in the driveway but my 94 yr old mother(yes she still drives). Carrying a five gallon bucket. She was temporarily out of water. She still has enough mind to tell me this reminds her of the week or two after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lots of fear back then because they knew for sure that brothers and dads would soon be shipped off to war, knowing full well thousands would never return.

  13. We had to cut our wintering short and get back here to Illinois where we have adults in charge. Otherwise, just taking great care when we venture out for goods and supplies. We may have to hunker down for a couple months or more.

  15. Need a pedicure soon. My toenails scratch my toes and I’m too nearsighted to cut my toenails without injuring myself. On the positive side, with more growth I should be able to use my talons catch my own food for a healthy protein snack.

  16. OK. Have not had a good night’s sleep for about two weeks. Have had to limit my intake of social media and news and increase my listening to music. I live in the country, so being able to move about freely outside has been a real blessing.

  17. Rich, I hope you, personally, are doing ok. As grateful as I am for all you’re doing, my hope is that you and yours are ok.

As for me, yeah, I’m doing ok. I worry about family, local and out of state, worry about things I can control, worry more about things I can’t. I know my limit of information, trying not to overwhelm, while staying informed with important and truthful knowledge.

Using Zoom and FaceTime, and it helps. The connecting with people is important to mental health.

Lastly, trying not to dwell. I’m home, I’m at home but trying not to be consumed with that. Realizing how lucky I am and trying to be thoughtful and level headed, without that dwelling.

    Lots of words, I know.

    I know this too;

If I’m asking how you are, I want to know. We need to be here for each other, and not brush off how we all are feeling. Listening to each other is important. I want to know how you are. Tell me.

  18. So far so good. Hope everyone is doing well and hanging on.

Doing our best to socially isolate and follow the state and local orders. There were a few slip-ups, but I quickly sanitized my hands and avoided touching my face after handling something questionable. It was a little difficult at first to adapt, after we’ve all lived so freely all our lives, without worry of this.

  20. We’re working from home. We have what can best be described as “Schrodinger’s Flu”- we probably have COVID-19, but the symptoms are too mild, to further burden an over burdened system. So we’re just trying to stay out of each other’s way.

Comment by West Sider Friday, Mar 27, 20 @ 9:13 am

  21. Not managing the stress well, decision fatigue from difficult and high-stakes choices, tired from long hours, short-tempered at work and thus disappointed in myself. Pleased I have have made some time for self-care to guard against getting ill and becoming even less effective. I think I’ll level out soon. Someone pulled over to yell at me to get indoors while I was out on my walk this morning (in a small town, on an empty sidewalk).

  23. Experiencing what seems to be a normal head cold. Developed covid-19-related paranoia for a several hours when I first started to cough, but the stuffy nose and lack of fever or aches or other coronavirus symptoms led to my first ever feeling of relief over getting a common cold. Nevertheless, I’m trying to stay well away from the rest of my family (and everyone else) out of an abundance of caution.

  24. Kind of as a game I’m enjoying trying new recipes and cooking using combinations of ingredients already in our freezer, cabinets and pantry to avoid grocery store runs. The Metropolitan Opera has been streaming (for free) an opera from their video archives every night for the past two weeks and say they’ll continue as long as the Met is shut down. So we’ve been enjoying those. Also, I located a bunch of games (free) on the internet from the 2005 World Series and run-up which we are loving in light of the current zMLB shut-down. Here is historic game 4 on you tube for any one who is interested.

  25. “How are you and yours holding up?”

As an individual, I’m doing just fine.

But at this moment, COVID-19 is my family’s fourth most dire/urgent medical issue.

And it’s tough to be there for people when you can’t be there for people.

  26. We are kind of having the opposite problem than most. My wife and I are both considered essential personnel. So it is a little weird juggling schedules with the kids, as nobody wants to watch them for us and we don’t want them going anywhere anyway. Early mornings and late nights right now. But we are making it work.

I can’t imagine that will be the case but, as usual, little to no communication from DHS as to their game plan moving forward. It’s a bit frustrating but my family and I are healthy and don’t want for anything. For that I am grateful. Be well everyone.

  40. Hanging in there. My home office consists of the couch and I’m sitting and eating way too much. Vow to change that.

One of my kids lost her job the other day. She has a family and luckily her husband is still employed but it still stinks.

Bottom line, everyone is healthy so far but I miss being with the ones I love.

I learn so much from every one of you. I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe and healthy. My wife and I are doing well. I’m working from home. My wife runs a small daycare, but no kids have been coming since the stay at home order. We’ve been taking short walks to get out and breathe in some fresh air.

  42. I’m doing okay physically. Mentally, not too bad, but I worry about what will happen if this goes on too long. However, a few days ago, my financial adviser called and talked me down off the ledge, and let me know that, despite what was going on in the markets, I’m still in good shape, so that helped.

I cleaned out the spice cupboard yesterday. Today, the pantry; tomorrow, the world! Well, maybe just the kitchen.

I’m doing way more cooking than normal, and am trying to be a bit more creative. Last night, I made a white pizza - goat cheese, ground venison, sage, thyme. Very good, if I do say so myself.

Reading a lot, too. I’ve just started Anthony Trollope’s “He Knew He Was Right”, which, at nearly 800 pages, will keep me busy for quite a while.

I’m keeping in touch with friends and family via email & phone, and a social group I have is planning to have our next get-together on Zoom (which, I have to say, has been a godsend).

I just wish it would warm up so I could go and sit on my back porch for a bit.

@Blue Dog Dem - your mom sounds like a heckuva lady.

@Fly like an eagle - two words: emery board. Not the best, but it’ll do in a pinch.

  45. This whole thing sucks, but honestly, I feel blessed. I’m able to work from home so there’s no financial insecurity, we’re all stocked up, I have one young kid teaching an online art course, another learning guitar, and I’ve been learning how to play guitar “correctly” (I’m self-taught). I may order a ukulele today and learn a new instrument too.

I’m worried about a lot of folks - I have a lot of friends who are out of work now, including both parents of several families. I worry about front-line workers and the health care system in general. And the uncertainty of it all is unsettling of course.

  46. For the first time, I regret living in an elevator building instead of a house. I have to take the dog down the elevator and through the lobby for its walk, so I can’t fully hunker down.
Only 2-18 more months to go.

Comment by Keyrock Friday, Mar 27, 20 @ 10:03 am

  47. Doing well down here in the rural south. A little additional and annual spring stress related to flooding and flood forecasts. Some days seems like all we are missing are hordes of locusts. Not good seeing so many ag fields with standing water.

Sad re: IDNR closures; ’tis the season for spring foraging and mushroom hunting.
Happy re: Finally starting to see a few more folks starting to grasp the importance of social distancing and staying at home.

On the flip side of that - influx of out of towners coming to area to recreate on the federal properties. That’s not so great, and seeing groups congregating at the more popular spots for outdoor recreation that are open.

Overall? Feel that our household is in much better shape than others. Fully stocked pantry, freezers full of wild game meat, not terribly social folks to begin with, and I have worked remotely/from home for years. Delivered some “goodie” bags from our stash to a few in town this morning. (Ground venison and home canned fish was a hit with several families!)

I can work from home and I am grateful to do so. My special needs son is adjusting to the new normal and I have learned about Zoom and Skype. I have spoken with my loved ones more than I ever have, so that is a blessing.

    you know….
I have my youngest with me so that’s been nice
    really nice
I’m well stocked up. I have goals and aspirations. Doing a lot of yoga. Just living day by day.
Oh and I finally got the sewing machine out and taught myself how to use it.
I make a pretty decent cloth surgical mask.
I’ve outfitted my little country grocery store cashiers and I’m moving on to other low wage folks who have recently been deemed “essential” although they are afforded no protections or pay increase. All about those folks now.

  59. State employee. Working from home. All is well with myself and family. DoIT is a mess as usual — but whatever. DoIT never had their act together, even when all was well.

But — heck no — am I returning to work (in Chicago) until I see some hard data about numbers dwindling, flattening out. I’m expecting to stay at home for at least 4 months, probably 6.

Pritzker’s doing a good job — but I hope — hope — he’s taking a lesson from Cuomo (who’s doing a brilliant, brilliant job) and preparing.

I mean, we don’t have any hospital ships or Javits centers — so I’m assuming Gov P is looking at the United Center? Or some other place for surge capacity?

Chicago — city proper — is going to be a mess in 10 days. I hope Gov P and Mayor L. are prepping for this. If they aren’t, that’s a big problem. I know Mayor L feels like it’s under control — but I hope she’s right.

  61. First, thanks to you Rich and to all of the commenters. You are one of my links to home through this. We are caught out of town and opted to hunker down here. We have a good pantry, open places to hike and our extended family is all hunkered down and surviving. Son is on the front lines in rural Washington coping with desperate folks who need paychecks. He works the phones and tested negative after an exposure to a victim. Daughter & family coping with no income but stable for now. We’re looking for ways to help others without exposing ourselves as we are both at risk if we catch it. Be well everyone and God Bless Gov. Pritzker and every essential worker and leader who is working to keep things going. We will survive and hopefully come out in a better place.

  65. South suburb of Chicago here, minutes from Indiana. Rich, thanks for all you do to fight panic and misinformation. Minimum time in stores wearing gloves, but have no mask. Great time for my seasonal bronchial issues to flare, but okay. Reminding people to stay calm, stop hoarding, and stay home if possible. Food ok, car ok, I’m ok. Helped by delivering some used containers to brewery making hand sanitizer; they are giving it away to first responders, nursing homes, and citizens. Considering donating blood due to shortages. No 18 month scenario here; virus will run it’s course quick if we all do what we can. Sorry I can’t help with the anti-cat-yowling volume issue though. But I can go outside and walk around block or to nearby mailbox; little foot traffic; local Metra commuter parking lot had 5-6 cars. Hang in there everybody!

  67. We are very grateful to be home with our kids. They’re healthy now, but also have terrible asthma so we are on guard. Our octogenarian parents are healthy too although getting them to truly understand that they can’t go out grocery shopping has been a bit of a challenge.

Spoke with a friend from college days yesterday who was irate that the Mayor closed the lakefront. He lives in the suburbs. We are in the heart of the city. I shared that the lakefront was wild on Wednesday with soccer and pick up basketball games, runners, walkers, bikers. I explained st pats weekend was out of control on the north side with both 20 somethings out at the bars as well as many in the 30-50 crowd. I told him how grateful I was that the Gov and the Mayor had the courage to make the hard decisions given the current situation and the forecasted trajectory of this illness. The conversation continued and I shared that I am watching the WHO projections and data closely. He said he doesn’t watch the news because it’s all fake and he didn’t know anyone with the virus.

Suffice it to say, this is a highly educated individual who doesn’t seem to grasp the gravity of this very dangerous situation. And there are many more folks out there like him.

So Cap Fax team —wishing all of you good health and safety during this very challenging time and prayers for all who are frontline.

  68. Still here. Still more or less healthy.

Ditto for close family although the grandkids don’t totally get it. The youngest one had a birthday this week we had to watch remotely. And my son has lost 10 - 12 hours off his 40 hour week but is still working; the expected Federal check will help them out.

Most friends doing well although one had a trip to the ER and hospitalization for pneumonia, back home now. The last time we were out to dinner was with him and his wife, that was 13 days ago. We actually started hunkering down over 20 days ago but made an exception that day.

Good to see most people here are doing OK.

  69. -Honeybear- hang in there; it will eventually get better. Good things will happen when you least expect it.

  71. My father in law, tried to drop off doughnuts, I waived him off, still trying to make him get it. Hanging in there. Thanks to Rich and all the commentators, Although the news is grim/scary, here it doesn’t seem so bad.

  72. Now is when time and isolation and uncertainty begin to weigh more heavily. The wife is essential, so her days follow a somewhat normal pattern. I am retired but usually active somewhere as an outdoor photographer, so being housebound is wearisome. Cancelled four workshop/shooting trips out west through July. I’m compensating by thinking about buying a new camera that I don’t need. First world problems.

Grateful to be healthy with resources to ride this out, and for regular e-contact with family and friends. Wishing good things for everybody on this blog, which is a true blessing for keeping in touch with the wider world.

  73. Took my big laptop to the computer shop. I think it has a virus (not kidding) so am typing on little laptop for travel. Glad that computer folks are available although he said he hasn’t had many customers. I bought a Instant Pot a while ago but hadn’t used it. Going to make stew after being able to get some meat and vegs at the grocery–all out of salad greens etc. and the only carrots were organic. Really can’t complain. Praying for all that are out there helping the sick and ailing. If I had fabric I would make surgical masks.

  74. Tested for coving eight days ago through Memorial in Springfield. No results yet. Asking for patience , which I am, and have told me the results lab is overloaded. Whatever I had beat the crap out of me. Slowly recovering and have been in quarantine for 12 days.

  75. Essential job. Grateful to go into large office with only three other workers in a building locked down to the public. Would be terribly bored at home.

  76. Pro Tip: If you haven’t started watching it - Tiger King on Netflix is addictive and so good you’ll feel like you need a shower by the end of it.

  77. All considered, doing pretty well. Trying to avoid the news after 5 pm, which seems to help my typical but recently exacerbated difficulty sleeping. Feel fortunate to have a job (for now), mom safely in a nursing center that locked it down before the state required it, and a wife and kids who are troopers and healthy. Spending more time with them is a silver lining.

Trying to keep from laying off staff and keep all the balls in the air. Very fortunate to have what I do and appreciate it a little more than before.

There may or may not be a work-related virtual happy hour later today… I love the people I work with and for. Staying connected and finding creative ways to enjoy what we have has been an unexpected benefit.

Thanks for asking Rich. To Rich and all, please be well.

  78. I work in one of the collar county courthouses. Happy to have a place to go each morning and on a daily basis am astounded by phenomenal work done by our clerks making sure that our dockets and court system don’t become a shambles.

  79. So far, so good. Not left the house in 8 days. Have enough supplies to last about another week. I was hoping this C-19 pandemic would be subsiding by now, but instead it is getting worse.
Due to age and medical conditions, my wife and I are “sitting ducks” according to our doctors. They told us to stay at home and avoid going to stores as much as possible.

  80. Retired DHS supervisor they called me to see if I was interested in working again helping with applications. I said sure I would and gladly to get things to folks. I have not heard anymore other than they turned in names. That was Monday so I hope so I can still work speedily.

Otherwise I have been going out riding my bike 50 miles a day in the middle of nowhere. Have not gone anyplace other than groceries. Getting bit much but I feel blessed actually would like to help. The bike rides really are good for the mental aspect too.

  81. Thanks to Rich and the Capfax community. It really cuts down on the isolation.
Daughter tested negative for Covid, but has pneumonia. We are careful to stay 8 feet apart. Wife is working from home.

Going out for drives, but not going in anywhere. I don’t think people are emotionally ready for how bad it will be. Bracing myself.

  83. Doing okay here. Working from home, but as an essential employee (local gov’t) Ill be heading into the office at least once a week here. After talking with bosses, cuts were made so jobs are all safe. Wife wasn’t so lucky working for a private company. She got the call today. Rest of the family is good. We all healthy.

  84. Doing OK in Kane.

I’m working a normal schedule from home, and my partner drove in last week from MA with her two kids and dog to shelter here - her business is effectively closed both by local order and conditions (no one needs fancy wedding, bar/bat mitzvah and birthday cakes when all the event venues are closed and gatherings are prohibited.)

We are worried, her mom is in a care facility back home and is suddenly having Alzheimer’s related issues. Prayers for her are appreciated if that’s your thing…
