Please, don’t be a Covidiot

* Mick Dumke wrote about the Chicago Housing Authority for ProPublica Illinois

But other information from the CHA was contradictory and confusing. On March 10, a resident service coordinator distributed memos to tenants at the Lincoln Perry apartments announcing that, as a coronavirus precaution, the building’s lunch service would only provide take-out boxed meals. To minimize person-to-person contact, residents were asked to exit the dining room once they picked up their food.

However, the memo added, “The dining room will reopen @1:30 pm daily for socialization, ie, all scheduled events, parties, activities, health seminars, etc.”

*facepalm*

* Sigh

A West Loop yoga studio has been issued a violation notice after the city disagreed with its contention that it was a place of “health and wellness” and therefore could remain open as an essential business under the state’s safe-at-home order.

The action on Friday came after several people complained online and to their alderman about Bikram Yoga West Loop studio at 611 W. Adams St., concerned that the close quarters and the nature of its hot yoga classes would further spread the coronavirus.

* Oh for crying out loud…

1) That’s a public park and it’s now closed;

2) The government has the right to prohibit activity that presents a potential harm to the populace, particularly during a pandemic;

3) Stop whining on Twitter and go do something proactive and positive for a change.

* Facebook ad…

Another one. Check out the bottom of the website. So, so dumb. But it looked real to a high-up exec at a big IL company, so it was shared during a meeting this morning 😑 pic.twitter.com/0bMzcGpFBa

Get off Facebook.

* Again, get off Facebook

An article on a holistic health blog that has been circulating Facebook tells people to go outside to prevent catching the new coronavirus because sunlight kills it. […]

Only levels of concentration of UV light much higher than what is found in sunlight can kill viruses, the experts note, and the levels that are able to kill viruses can cause irritation to human skin and should be avoided.

Going outside is definitely good for you (as long as you keep a distance from others), but it won’t cure a virus. Some people were just not raised very well.

  5. Brazenly denying reality is a Skillacorn hallmark.

    His misinformation and mendacity about the cornavirus are alarming.

    Judgement and discernment in conjunction with character and leadership credibility matter.

    Skillacorn is a fool pretending to care. . . . . . .desperate for relevance.

    Skillicorn’s legislative career in a nutshell.

    This is also the same legislator worried about a “Red Dawn” scenario so asking Mr. Skillicorn to be… well, rational… Mr. Skillicorn needs to be an adult first than you can ask things like rationality.

    He does. Oh he does. His entire career is based on being a troll. He’s a Facebook comments section come to life.

  8. Time for Rep. Skillicorn to perhaps educate himself on “time, place, and manner” restrictions. Feel free to sue and lose, buddy.

    But then again, you can’t have Assemble without its first three letters.

  9. Covidiot for sure…like the posters from three weeks ago..”there are only 7 cases in Chicago..why the panic?==. Thankfully they have gone away. Question with nowhere else to ask. The IDPH Covid page is a very good by county map, but its always behind. I think it currently reflects Friday afternoon numbers. We need to be working on Coronatime now…

  10. “The Governor to stop liquor sales”

    Even though it is fake news, there going to be a run on the liquor stores that will rival the TP hording.

  12. I truly feel sorry for Rep Skillicorn. I was exactly like him until about the age of 23. Then I grew up. Some people spend their lives learning and gaining worthwhile experience. Others just get really good at being covidiots. It’s never too late to change. But I won’t hold my breath.

    Agreed.

    So are many other types of assembly that we are repeatedly told are “peaceful.” Not sure that’s the legal road you’re looking for there

  16. I recently had a highly educated person tell me that sunshine would kill COVID-19 so there was no reason to worry about it. They weren’t sure exactly how long it would take for sunshine to kill the virus, maybe 24 hours. I then asked that person how many little hands might touch the same spot over a period of 24 hours, on, say, some playground equipment? The expression on that person’s face changed quickly.

    I’m pretty sure the sun has continued to rise every day since the outbreak started, and yet it continues to spread around the world.

    It’s not the first time a joke went over Skillicorn’s head. Certainly won’t be the last.

    And there are people clamoring for our General Assembly to go back to work. I think certain legislators being away from the Capitol is safer. Just sayin.

  20. The governor asked people to distance and company’s to work from home if possible. The State is now telling its own employees that if they scheduled timeoff during the work from home mandate that they cannot cancel this vacation time and work. So he wants employees to stay home and they wish to work in order to help out during the crisis but are being told No. Sounds no better than private industry.

  21. I just watched video of USNS Comfort coming into New York Harbor. There were people watching from ashore including some taking pictures and a few parents with small children pointing out the ship and explaining what it was coming there for. It was not crowded or a mob scene. There seemed to be reasoned social distancing going on. It makes me think Mayor Lightfoot could have figured a way to keep the lakefront trails and pathways here open through creative monitoring and controls rather than total shut down. Just my opinion.

  24. Rep. Skillicorn, may I call you Allen?

    OK, Skilly, a friend of mine has asked when, from your beginnings, berating the East Dundee staff over how many reams of paper they were using and actually expending more staff time and effort than could have ever been saved in 50 years of copier paper frugality, until now did you realize that you are a tool?

    Again, asking for a friend.

  26. ==I had a nice cashier at Walmart warn me this morning that liquor sales were stopping today at 3PM. “it’s a new state law”

    A week ago from last Friday, the liquor store I have a fun part time job in opened at 10 AM to people coming in going, “So today’s the day at 2, huh” The guys opening the store were like what are you talking about. “The Governor is going to close you down” They said they didn’t think so and pointed out the other states were largely leaving liquor stores open. Oh, no, they would not be dissuaded. It wasn’t crazy at the story (I came in later) but it was the biggest day of sales ever at both locations. The Governor didn’t close the liquor stores, but people “know” it’s going to happen. On top of this, most closures have come with 24 hour warnings at least.

  30. Just to provide some background on the sunglight argument.
    That dates to results from the 1918 pandemic, where soldiers who spent more time outside were seen to recovery faster and those not infected were less likely to get it.
    There was some evidence that merely being outside was the cause, but there also was evidence that air filtration systems at the time were poor, and that caused the better results outside.

    As a result, the sunlight argument probably goes under the “unlikely to help, not impossbible to help, but also not much downside to getting out and walking around, as long as you take seriously the instruction to avoid people.”

    Passive voice always leads to confusion. Who is doing the telling? Who is we? You and your cat? Why is the word peaceful in quotes?

  33. Rich, I certainly understand that people have to not believe everything they read on Facebook. Couldn’t agree more. But locally we are utilizing Facebook to get valid and important information out. During social distancing, we have to rely on technology. Anyone is free to check us out.
