Question of the day

Posted in:

* Asked by a reporter during the governor’s press conference today

Do you ever feel that you’re the most hated man in Illinois in this virus situation?

* Part of his response…

Pritzker: "Tough decisions need to be made by leaders. … Doing the right thing is to be a leader, no matter what some minority of folks yell at you. The vast majority of people in Illinois want to get through this virus" by keeping people healthy and out of hospitals.

— Kristen Thometz (@KristenThometz) October 28, 2020

* The Question: How would you have reacted to that question?

  4. “real leaders have to make tough decisions that are best for Illinois, not run around and pander to the lowest common denominator”

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:27 am

  5. I think his response was spot on. Leadership is not about worrying if people like you. If that is your concern, you are in the wrong gig.

Comment by Montrose Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:28 am

  6. “Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.-Albus Dumbledore”

Comment by Donnie Elgin Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:28 am

  7. A legitimate question when you look at the comments on Facebook to articles posted by the press. What is posted above is a good answer as well. Doing what is right in your own mind based on the facts and information provided by experts in the field is the way too go.

  8. “If I’m not, I’m doing something wrong.”

    His response is spot on

  13. ===when you look at the comments on Facebook===

Get off Facebook. It’ll rot your mind and distort your reality. It’s a fantasy land.

  14. Fun one?

    “Everyone’s a critic”

    To the QOTD,

“Choices and decisions allow for judgements of those leading. It comes with the territory. Popularity is not in the mix of reasons when life-saving decision might not be popular.”

Also, I liked the Governor’s response.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:37 am

  15. “Adulting is hard, Leading is even harder, doing both is flat out tough. Sometimes I have to do both for people who can’t or won’t “

Comment by NorthSideNoMore Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:40 am

  16. His Response was good. Echoing what Montrose said.

==keeping people healthy and out of hospitals==

That is important. All the mitigations are ideally about preventing deaths. But what the mitigations/lockdowns are really for is to prevent the hospitals from getting overwhelmed.

Especially in the rural areas where the profit seeking healthcare systems have been closing rural hospitals. The remaining hospitals do not have the beds/ICU capacity to handle multiple waves of COVD-19

Comment by Big Jer Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:41 am

  17. A simple, Yes.

    Comment by A Guy Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:44 am

  18. I think Pritzker’s response hits the mark. He knows that none of this is going to be easy. He’s not looking for praise and adulation or only focusing on those that agree with him. It stands in stark contrast to what the President is doing. I may not agree with every decision that Pritzker has made, but I know that they’re informed by science and his belief in what is right. That’s what leadership is. Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you, listed to what they have to say, and make courageous decisions.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:44 am

  19. That’s a pretty good answer.

I don’t think I could do better on demand because I would have added something about how I hoped that the people who aren’t taking things seriously are held accountable which would have been the news story instead of the soundbite presented.

Comment by Candy Dogood Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:46 am

  20. Has Jim Boylen left the State yet?

Comment by AlfondoGonz Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 11:49 am

  21. “If I’m hated for trying my best to end this pandemic while saving lives, I won’t regret it. Wear a mask.”

Comment by Wensicia Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 12:00 pm

  22. I think the Governor’s answer was to the point. This is something Mrs. Club J and I have discussed after watching some of his press conferences. He had no clue of this pandemic when he ran for election and now he’s making tough decisions for all the people of Illinois. I know he has a team of Doctors and Scientists he gets information from, but a lot of how he handles things comes from his own background. You can hear it in his voice every time he talks about the number of deaths. It’s not something he takes lightly. He willing to fight for the people of Illinois no matter what is said about him. That takes a special kind of person to let that just roll off your shoulders. Is he perfect? NO, but thank God we don’t have the last three in office.

    Comment by Club J Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 12:06 pm

  23. I would’ve said I remember the famed words of Winston Churchill during the Blitz, “Forget it, folks! It’s hopeless! Time to give up! We’re only being bombed because of shelters. No bombing, no shelters!”

Comment by Precinct Captain Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 12:13 pm

  24. It was a very good answer.
“No, that’s still Bruce Rauner” would also have worked.
By the way, has Bartman’s time come and gone?

Comment by Keyrock Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 12:13 pm

  25. Wait till he finally realizes that WalMart is more dangerous than a restaurant. Once he shuts Costco and the other stores down he’ll really be on a few folk’s __it list.

Comment by Joe Schmoe Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 12:14 pm

  26. Madigan. COVID COVID COVID COVID COVID. Madigan.

  27. I would have said that I care for the people of Illinois
based on science and public health best practices.
I can’t imagine why people would hate you for protecting
    you and your loved ones.

I guess time will tell if I made the right decisions.

Comment by Loop Lady Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 12:17 pm

  28. ” I feel a very great weight of responsibility for protecting the lives of every Illinoisan, whether they are a fan or not. I took my oath of office seriously and this is my first duty to the people. There is no other agenda here but to save lives, and save the state. The majority of citizens are on board and we’re all working together to get thru this, by following the science, listening t the advice of the experts, and showing as much responsibility, self-sacrifice, personal leadership and neighborliness to each other as we can.”

“This pandemic crisis is in effect a slow-motion version of a war, but this time, everyone’s been drafted to fight it. Everyone. Because everyone you know and love is in danger from it. And the people you -don’t- know, as well. Not caring about the fate of strangers is a luxury now and we can’t afford it.”

  29. How would I have reacted?

    Poorly

  30. ==Bite me. Next question.==

Wasn’t that a Ditka press conference reply once? I thought somewhere on YouTube once I had seen a video of presser highlights where Ditka said the above to a reporter.

  32. “People are mad when they see a situation that’s beyond their control. If they’re mad at me, it’s because they think I’ll listen. And I am. I’m mad too. I’m there’s national and local media dealing misinformation about this virus and telling people to disregard the health of their neighbors. I’m mad there’s no action in Washington to save our independent restaurants, bars, and shops. I’m sad when I see restaurants I’ve enjoyed disregarding health rules, and when neighbors don’t wear masks.”

    * Gov. Bruce Rauner was out of town during today’s big union rally, but he did talk about it briefly while in Carterville…

“If yelling and chanting and protesting solved problems, Illinois wouldn’t have any problems.”

  34. Thank you Governor for your leadership

Comment by A Simple Thank You Wednesday, Oct 28, 20 @ 2:19 pm

  37. Pritzkers response is good. If I’m being honest, I probably would have flared up a bit at the question, gotten defensive and angry. One of many reasons i’m not a politician
