*** UPDATED x1 *** Despite losing by 1.4 percentage points, Oberweis launches discovery recount

Posted in:

* Press release from last night…

Jim Oberweis, candidate for Congress in the 14th District, is issuing the following statement on the discovery recount his campaign has formally launched.

“Today my campaign has formally initiated the process to begin a discovery recount. We are seeking a discovery recount in each of the seven counties within the 14th Congressional District. A discovery recount does not change a single vote, but it does allow us to see if the outcome might change with a full recount. Election law provides campaigns the ability to request a discovery recount in close elections. As we have said for the last few weeks, we would be seeking a discovery recount and the first of these recounts have been formally filed in DuPage County. We will be filing paperwork in the other counties in the coming days.”

* Pearson

Unofficial totals showed Underwood, of Naperville, with 203,209 votes, or 50.7%, compared with 197,835 votes for Oberweis, or 49.3%, in the west and northwest suburban and exurban district. […]

A discovery recount involves a partial sample of votes cast in the congressional district, which includes DuPage, DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. Unofficial results showed Underwood winning in all but McHenry and DeKalb counties.

If results from a discovery recount differ, the result of the election would not automatically change. But the recount could be used as the basis for a court challenge to the election results.

Needless to say, don’t expect a change in the end result. A 1.4 percentage point lead doesn’t just vanish.

*** UPDATE *** Press release…

Lauren Underwood for Congress released the following statement in response to news reports regarding Jim Oberweis’ pursuit of a discovery recount. This statement is attributable to Underwood spokeswoman Andra Belknap:

“The votes in this race have been counted and Mr. Oberweis lost. As he has acknowledged, a discovery recount cannot change the outcome of this election. Congresswoman Underwood is in Washington focused on the job she has been elected to do.”

  1. “A 1.4 percentage point lead doesn’t just vanish.”

Maybe not vanish, although it would certainly be entertaining to see her lead increase, even just a little bit.

  2. I’ve always thought Oberweis was a bad candidate, but in his defense….if Trump convinces the Republican base that elections are stolen and there must be recounts whenever you lose, then other GOP candidates are sorta’ forced to follow that lead if they hope to maintain good graces.

    Comment by Just Me 2 Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:47 am

  3. Frankly, this is his last shot and he knows it. I don’t blame him for going down fighting. But (and it’s a big “but”) he has to know that doing this gives the Trumpian elements of the party ammunition to question the legitimacy of elections going forward. It is his right to do this, but he has to understand that it does more harm than good to his party, and to democracy, down the line.

Comment by NIU Grad Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:47 am

  4. This is like playing a game at an airport before moving to Florida for good.

What else does Oberweis have to do?

    It’s busy-work.

Of course it’s also sad, pathetic, humiliating losing… again… and again with a recount…

… but Oberweis is the master at losing, so why not lose yet again, for old time sake?

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:49 am

  5. It does harm to democracy, sure. It does not do harm to the party that has rallied its base by actively seeking to harm democracy. This is the new playbook. The only way a Republican could possibly lose is by fraud.

Comment by Roadrager Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:50 am

  6. Well, at least the milkman isn’t spoiling things by making udderly ridiculous charges of vote fraud. Do I hear Florida calling?

Comment by Norseman Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:55 am

  7. To clarify: Whenever you lose because of vote changes from election night to later certification.

    Comment by Just Me 2 Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:56 am

  8. Surprised he didn’t refer to himself as “Congressman Elect Oberweis”

Comment by Red Ranger Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 9:58 am

  9. This is a pretty common tactic for close races without too much downside. It becomes seriously concerning if Oberweiss uses it as a springboard to jump on the Darren Bailey bandwagon, claiming some massive conspiratorial election fraud “”up north in Illinois.”" Senator Oberweiss likely knows that claim is nonsense, but we’ll see if he makes the leap.

  10. Smaller leads apparently don’t vanish either, like in Georgia, where Biden is going to win again today, for the third time (machine recount certification expected). Ice Cream Man following in Trump’s footsteps.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 10:09 am

  11. Next we can expect for ChopperJim to grab CommandoIves and rush off to Georgia to campaign for the GOPie Senate candidates. That seems to the current magnet for the nation’s whackjobs

Comment by Annoin' Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 10:14 am

  12. Nothing will change. Shame on the RNCC for not pushing him out of the way in the primary. Any of the other candidates close that gap and maybe (just maybe) take that seat.

  18. =It is his right to do this=

It is allowed by statute, but that isn’t a “right”.Rights cannot be taken away, this provision can be changed by legislation.

It is a spreader alright, but more like manure than anything else.

  24. Most of you have it wrong. First, Oberweis in no rush to transfer his residency to FL now that Fair Tax amendment lost. Second, Oberweis going to run again in the 14th in 2 years, as he knows he’ll win a primary no matter the new district. 2022 midterm in Dem presidency, he’s running again.

Comment by John Lopez Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 12:39 pm

  25. === First, Oberweis in no rush to transfer his residency to FL now that Fair Tax amendment lost.===

I dunno if that’s a good sign of Oberweis’ character, lol

=== Oberweis going to run again in the 14th in 2 years, as he knows he’ll win a primary no matter the new district. 2022 midterm in Dem presidency, he’s running again.===

Narrator: Oberweis will still have racist and bigoted thoughts in a map drawn by Democrats.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 12:43 pm

  26. ==he knows he’ll win a primary no matter the new district==
What Oberweis knows and what reality is are generally two different things.

  27. John Lopez,

If 2020 hasn’t taught you about forecasting the future, obviously nothing will.

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 2:15 pm

  28. Turner, reality is Oberweis hasn’t lost a primary since 2006.

Comment by John Lopez Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 2:17 pm

  29. === reality is Oberweis hasn’t lost a primary…===

    … and still… isn’t a Congressman.

    There are two groups of people so gleefully happy Oberweis wants to lose again in 2022;

    Grifters and Underwood.

The money he drops losing time after time after time…

How many Super Bowl losers wear their conference champions’ ring?

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 2:22 pm

  31. And how many of those Super Bowl runners up come back next season to get back in the Big Game by winning their conference? All of them.

  32. === And how many of those Super Bowl runners up come back next season to get back in the Big Game by winning their conference? All of them.===

    See: Bills, Buffalo, 1991-1994

Are you even trying at this point?

If you’re on the grifting train, don’t worry, Oberweis will pay.

  33. “Nobody circles the ice cream trucks like Jim Oberweis”

    - Chris Berman, maybe.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 2:57 pm

  34. John Lopez-

    What?

Listen, obviously you like Oberweis even though he doesn’t win the races that count.
But hey, wave that Oberweis participant banner all you like.

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 2:58 pm

  35. OW: How many times has Oberweis run for U.S. House? 3 So Bills analogy appropriate. Thought you guys liked muscle politics where Oberweis can enter a primary and he knows he’ll win no matter if he should win. He beat Truax from FL in ‘14, and beat 6 people in spite of nearly $1 million spent against him. IL-14 his race to win, and no other Republican will beat him in primary. Period.

Comment by John Lopez Friday, Dec 4, 20 @ 3:36 pm

  36. ===Thought you guys liked muscle politics where Oberweis can enter a primary and he knows he’ll win no matter if he should win.===

After losing so often, can’t he realize no one wants him?

Again, the only winners here are the grifters and Underwood.

To win means win a seat or race.

=== He beat Truax from FL in ‘14, and beat 6 people in spite of nearly $1 million spent against him. IL-14 his race to win, and no other Republican will beat him in primary. Period.===

    Still not a Congressman…lol

This would make a great blog post for your on bogging I’m sure, lol

  37. - John Lopez -

Why defend someone with such racist and bigoted thoughts?

    Because he’s an “R”?

    That’s odd.
