Disappointing that there is very little to address the structural, long-term budget deficit. Stop kicking the can and deal with the real issues.

$900 million in cuts to corporate welfare isn’t a one time revenue source. That will continue year after year so that starts to address our structural problems if the GA goes along with it.

Blaming the Republicans for not making suggestions for cuts is a real trojan horse. The Dems earned their super majority. Now do what you want to do.

Probably a more thoughtful attempt at a budget plan and assessment of the state than anticipated(?) as it seems no one is fully happy with all that was put forth.
Nicely written and delivered speech, judging style, substance, and execution…

It was about what I expected. I was holding out hope for some BOLD cuts but we didn’t get them.
It’s a starting point and I hope it can get some R votes along the way this spring.

Rather partisan. That has never been a good look for this Governor. He is still mad at this failure to pass the progressive tax amendment. And it was obvious.

Between the taping (not live), and use of staged workers/props in the background, it felt like a way too long and tortured campaign ad than a budget address.

If you’re Pritzker, and the federal government is fronting you cash that it’s paying 1.30% (10-year Treasury) to borrow, why would you address the structural deficit?
There is absolutely NO upside to increasing taxes right now.

Meh. I wish the governor had demonstrated that he understands the urgency about the state of Illinois’ financial present and future that many of his constituents are feeling. He doesn’t have to come across as hair on fire but a little more passion coupled with some practical new ideas would have been welcome.

Really glad to see Corporate tax credits being abolished and restricted. Just from page 4 of his budget in brief we only receive 7.3% of our State’s revenues from Corporate Income Tax. While 48.3% of the State’s revenues come from individual income taxes. It is beyond time to close that disparity.

Speech content was great. Republicans message is disjointed, off base, and contradictory depending on who is talking. Democrats seem pleased. Pritzker win. (during a very difficult year, we should acknowledge)

So Cool Papa, how about you spell out the Bold cuts you wanted to see.
Which group of people do you want to see their programs cut?
What group of state employees do you want to see laid off?
Which state operated developmental and mental health hospitals do you want to see closed?
What prisons should be closed and staff laid off>

Maybe one day Illinois will get the leader it needs, someone willing to own the sizable tax increases needed.

As we saw below, everyone wants more. There are a whole lot of groups that are underfunded. Is there an estimate of the revenue needed to make everyone feel like they didn’t get hosed? And how could we get there? I’m just trying to grapple on what a budget like that would look like.

I thought it was well done. Two things:
1) I was confused about his comments about the federal gov money and why we deserve more than our neighboring states.
2) I would like to have heard a major cut like a university closing or consolidating agencies (or even a minor cut like Duquoin state fair ending)

Governors own. Too bold? Not bold enough? Hoping for too much from feds? Not enough?
Doesn’t matter. I hope he has success, I don’t see GOP coming to the table, and I have yet to see voters vote with nuance.

Meh… it was fine. Not a bad speech. Most folks seem generally dissatisfied with the budget proposal, so it is probably a good one. At this point though, there is absolutely no need to even mention the GOP. Save that for the campaign season. All they do is complain and offer nothing, don’t give them a shout out. They haven’t earned it. And trust me, they want it more than anything else. It gives them credibility.

Disappointed that it doesn’t discuss the fundamental reorganization and consolidation of government at all levels. More than 8,000 units of government in the state. Time to reduce that number as part of the the overall plan to reach fiscal sanity.

Wonder what his speech would have been like if he was actually standing in front of the legislature. As for the budget, it will be tweaked but the governor will get most of what he wants. IMO, the governor has a long uphill battle ahead of him to win reelection.

Good, Bad or indifferent it’s the Senate Dems and Education, Black Caucus and funding the Social Justice reforms, the Republicans and pick any reason, local Municipalities. All are serious problems for the Governor in the days ahead.
