Question of the day

Posted in:

* First, some campaign developments…

To clarify: Brady is calling colleagues telling them he plans to run for Secretary of State, not for re-election to his House seat.

— Mark Maxwell (@MarkMaxwellTV) June 13, 2021

Just over a week after Sheriff Tony Brown announced he would retire and allow Jim Root to take office — finally settling the disputed 2018 election.

Buffett would have faced Root, the soon-to-be incumbent sheriff, in a Republican primary.https://t.co/Ce4YXDz2zk https://t.co/ayemzseb8g

* The Question: Who would you like to see run statewide? It doesn’t have to be next year, but please explain your response. Thanks.

  1. Already deleted a snarky post. Don’t push your luck.

  2. Who? Well, this is almost a dream. Bill Brady for SOS. I supported Brady in 2010 when he narrowly lost to Quinn. He would make an excellent administrator in the SOS office. Although I have some misgivings for some Rauner-era shenanigans, I would still support him over Alexi. And I would love to befuddle my neighbors by having a Bill Brady and a JB Pritzker sign in my yard.

  3. Dan Cronin. Former Senator and now Du Page County Board Chairman. He is a person that can work with all parties, ethical, integrity, believes in consolidation

  4. Kinzinger for GOP nom to GOV.

Comment by RegularJoe Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 2:39 pm

  5. Teresa Mah for SOS

    Comment by 10th Ward Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 2:40 pm

  6. Kirk Dillard. He got a bad deal when he ran against rauner, he would have been a good governor. I would support him for SOS over anyone named Brady. Dillard didn’t fall into the raunerite nonsense. He was my kind of republican.

  7. Explain your responses, people. Thanks.

  8. Michelle Obama for U.S. Senate (whenever Sen. Durbin decides to retire). She’s politically astute, and has integrity and great leadership skills. I think she could help resolve some of the divisiveness in D.C.

  9. I don’t want Dan Brady to run statewide.

I have been frustrated with him on votes where he has lacked the same courage shown by Barickman but he’s not as wacko as a lot of other Republicans and he’s been an accessible, visible member of the community in office.

I suppose the not being as wacko as other Republicans is why so many right-wing locals have had it out for him and why he’d have trouble getting out of the primary in a redrawn district. So at 60 might as well up or out.

Hope his replacement isn’t too much of a Eastern Bloc goof.

  10. As to who I would like to run statewide - maybe Andy Manar?

Comment by hisgirlfriday Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 3:08 pm

  11. Murphysboro Mayor Will Stephens. He is level headed and works hard. We need some non-crazy downstate political voices to have their voices amplified.

Comment by Dee Lee Hood Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 3:08 pm

  12. Dillard definitely could have made Illinois a purple state. He was the kind of Republican who could have built a winning coalition of Pubs and Dems. Unfortunately those days are long gone, thanks to Rauner.

Comment by Suburbanon Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 3:09 pm

  13. Kinzinger for Senate as he is the only one who’s bio matches up well with Sen. Duckworth. Also, based on skill set alone, I’d like to see Richard Porter run for Governor. We need a restructuring expert to apply his expertise to Illinois’ future (but in a more tactful, bridge-building way than Rauner did)

Comment by Middle Way Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 3:17 pm

  14. Buffett for Governor or State Treasurer.
Buffett seems like a fellow who has heart in the right place and his father is an American Icon.
Also the R’s could use a candidate that isn’t a wing nut.

Comment by Back to the Future Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 3:22 pm

  15. Might be too old now (he’d be 70 when Durbin’s seat may open up in ‘26) but was heartened to see some chatter a couple of years ago about Chuy Garcia contemplating a Senate run back against Mark Kirk in 2016. It’d be nice to see one of the Bluest states in the country send a bonafide progressive to Washington. Would be equally nice to see a state with one of the largest Latino populations in the country finally elect its first Latino senator.

  16. @Back to the Future

Google Howard Buffett and Arizona border. He’s got some issues

Comment by Any Moose Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 4:33 pm

  17. I’d genuinely like to see Rahm Emanuel run for statewide office because an Emanuel candidacy could do the impossible and unite all stripes of Illinois voters.

  18. Dan Cronin. He’s the complete package–honest, bipartisan, smart, savvy, just an all around great guy.

Comment by Chicago Girl Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 4:36 pm

  19. Is “suspending” the same as “ending” ? …asking for a friend who’s fearful of billionaires no matter how beneficent.

Comment by Dotnonymous Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 4:58 pm

  20. @ Bourbon Street -

Why would you want someone to run who has made it crystal clear that she hates politics?

= I think she could help resolve some of the divisiveness in D.C. =

Considering that she has been the subject of incredibly vicious racist and misogynistic attacks, I doubt it.

Comment by JoanP Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 4:59 pm

  21. Ozzie Guillen - because it would be a hoot and he would give straight answers in interviews (and maybe give his cell phone number out for voters to text him).

Comment by lake county democrat Monday, Jun 14, 21 @ 5:37 pm

  22. Really hope the dems can come up with a quality challenge to Alexi Ga-notgonnawin-olias. Someone who can mop up Cook County and not get obliterated south of I-80. Lauren Underwood is interesting but why would she leave congress? Laura Murphy, maybe. MSD Prez Kari Steele would be a strong candidate. Exec experience and maybe one of the most charming politicians in the state. She gives Jessie a run for his money.
