Them’s fighting words, governor

Posted in:

* News media Q&A with Gov. JB Pritzker on July 27th

Mike Flannery: Are you confident that the World Series, if it comes to 35th Street, will move forward?

Gov. Pritzker: It’s, it’s coming to Wrigley before it’s gonna… [laughter, applause]

* Later that day…

Wait. Are we talking about Pritzker's deranged prediction about the Cubs today?

    It doesn’t help when you’ve also got the Tigers, Royals, and Twins in your division, but if the Sox want to have a deep playoff run they need to improve the record against .500+ teams. Only 22-26 against teams with a winning record, worst among the division leaders.

  2. Cubs to White Sox: Here’s Kimbrel. You’re welcome.

  3. Yesterday’s White Sox-Cleveland game (which was my Father’s Day present from my son and daughter-in-law) was outstanding. Kimbrel is having an amazing year!

  4. Ask him if he goes to Wisconsin on week ends to watch the Packers.

  5. Wait, I thought Busch was on Clark Ave.?

  6. It’s tough being a Cubs fan… but there’s no denying what is happening at 35th and Shields is pretty special and is only getting better with 60 or so games left.

    The Governor’s “thoughts” here are the definition of a fan or “fanatic” and that’s ok… just not realistic given the baseball we’ve seen

  7. I don’t like giving up Nicky 2 Strikes, but you have to go for it when you can.
    I think Cubs (management and fans) greatly overvalued their talent for years.

  8. ===greatly overvalued their talent for years===

    Right up until it was time to offer them long-term, big-money contract extensions apparently.

    Rizzo, Baez, and Bryant all homered 24 hours after being traded.

  10. Completely useless by September.

  11. I hope the White Sox win the Series. As a parent of children under 12, however, I’m starting to get concerned about promoting large gatherings when only a small percentage of the State/Nation is vaccinated and the Delta variant seems to be a very serious problem.

    Comment by Mary Monday, Aug 2, 21 @ 9:07 am

  12. I mean, I would rather have a Governor that knows his or her Fandom than one that thinks they need to straddle both sides.

    More than half the state is vaccinated. And it’s outdoors.

  14. The Madrigal-Kimbrel trade makes sense for both teams. Just as the Eloy/Cease-for-Quintana trade did at the time (though, the Sox have clearly won that swap.) We’ll see how this turns out.

    One thing’s for sure: a cute, little, try-hard white guy like Madrigal is the quintessential Wrigleyville fan-favorite. Buy stock in his Cubs jersey.

  15. ===Madrigal is the quintessential Wrigleyville fan-favorite.===

    And he’s already injured. How Cub is that?

  16. The attacks on Abreu high inside have got to stop. They are not “coincidences”. Especially when the bases are loaded and the opponent is Cleveland.

  17. =More than half the state is vaccinated. And it’s outdoors.=

    We could use these events and the excitement around the White Sox to actually encourage people to get vaccinated. You want to attend? Show your vaccine card. Kids under 12 are welcome but masks are mandatory. Make it obvious that doing the things you enjoy requires a sacrifice at this point.

    Thank you for this! I really hate it when Politicians try to do this to not lose a vote from 1 side or the other.

    Maybe the White Sox could ask their landlord for permission to do that?

    Curious to see any connection between the recent Bucks’ celebrations (closing in on two weeks) and what Lolla will really mean for infections.

    Time will tell.

  21. I appreciate the honesty from the Governor - save that “fan of both teams” rivalry for NY or LA.

    Mixed feelings on the trade - I know you got to give or get, but watching Madrigal frustrate pitchers is fun - he reminds me of my favorite Sox player (Nellie Fox).

  22. It’ll be a fun visit to Wrigley for me on Friday. I expect many like minded Sox fans. We’ll be looking to add to that four game life time lead (68-64) that shrunk during the Cubs five strong years.

  23. “I don’t like giving up Nicky 2 Strikes, but you have to go for it when you can.”

    Me either. But I feel a lot better after hearing Steve Stone address it last week on The Score.

  24. …from Chatham. Must be North Chatham. By the way, the 1907 and 1908 Champs played their home games on the south side. Just saying.

    Nah, they were all in their first games for their new teams, but none of them were within 24 hours.

    ==One thing’s for sure: a cute, little, try-hard white guy like Madrigal is the quintessential Wrigleyville fan-favorite. Buy stock in his Cubs jersey==

    Sad…true. Second (hopefully better) coming of The Riot

  26. Cubs’ season ticket holder here. The White Sox have a very nice team that could go all the way within the next two seasons. The Cubs just got a major head start on building their next Championship team that will win the World Series within 5 seasons after this year.
