Never thought of Stone as much as a Democrat since he bolted the Party to run with his friend Fast Eddie during the Harold Washington days. I was surprised to see him running as a Clinton delegate. Siverstein is close to Obama from his Senate days and will move the 50th Ward Democrats finally into the 21st century.

These make me happy, as do most of the other contested committeemen races. Now, would someone explain why the “reformers” did relatively poorly in the high profile countywide, legislative and congressional contests in Cook County, but did so well in the city committeemen contests.

Ald. Sandi Jackson victory. She has enormous potential, perhaps Mayor of Chicago. I argue, she is more likely to be elected Mayor than her husband. I haven’t seen her enough, but the little I have seen I think shows me she has what it takes.

The reformer I was most disappointed in was Jay Paul Deratany. He really clung to Assessor Houlihan too much and made some stupid commercials. I hope that money was well worth it to Houlihan. He tried to take out Joe Berrios(who is also the head of the County Democratic party. You know what they say, if you are trying to unseat a giant you better win or face the consequences. Maybe Joe Berrios should ask for a tour of the Houlihan’s office on the third floor. It might be his in the next few years.

The 50th is thrilled that Stone was defeated. The old guy’s had a rough couple of weeks — voter fraud among his ranks, no support from Daley, and now this.

The old African American war horses are dead or dying. But why is no one talking about Jesse Jr’s losses yesterday. Sufferdin and Kenny Johnson. Jackson Jr. beat Beavers, but the kingmaker he is not.

The hog with the big nuts getting his bottom kicked by Jr.’s wife is a welcome event. It points to the continued expansion of a better-informed black electorate in Chicago. This was also established by the solid trouncing that Brookins got in the State’s Attorney race. Say what you will about the many shortcomings of Jr., he clearly cares about ethics and good government. He may still be too callow a youth to do much for himself in terms of a bigger office, but he’s doing plenty for the black community.

Don’t lay Suffredin’s loss at Jr.’s feet. Suffredin was a queer fit for the office and Jr.’s main motivation in backing him was making sure that Brookins lost. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that Jr. saved the day. A Brookins-Peraica race would have had me looking at DuPage real estate and I shudder at the vanilla thought. Suffredin surely is thankful to Jr., he would have been in single digits without his help.

What was wrong with Brookins that made Jr. not want to support him. I must also disagree with you Sufferdin analysis. What is the old rule, “Don’t back a loser” Jr. must have thought Sufferdin had a chance if backed him so publicly. I know alot of people don’t like Brookins but I mean c’mon, he would have been as independent as anyone. Remember he beat back the Daley machine twice in 2003 and but for his Wal-Mart vote he would have had a cakewalk in 2007
And your answer still doesn’t explain Kenny Johnson, a two time loser. Will Burns was an ideal candidate based on his experience. It made sense to back Burns.
Jr. wants to be a boss not a reformer.

I firmly believe that Jr. was motivated more by keeping Brookins out than by a Suffredin win. That would have been a bonus and Jackson now has another firm ally on the County Board since Suffredin will keep his seat. Jr. wins either way. Historically, it’s my understanding that Brookins was helped by Jr. the first time he ran but then they had a falling out when Brookins ran afoul of an ethics pledge that those seeking Jr.’s endorsement are supposedly bound by. Without a viable candidate to take a big chunk of the black vote, Brookins would have become a default candidate for that community. Jr. and most others recognize what a disaster Todd Stroger is for everybody, but particularly a disaster for the black community which was essentially “told” to vote for Stroger. I can’t comment on the Will Burns race because it never got on my radar screen.

what about Michele Smith in the 43rd ward? Looks like Vi Daley committed political suscide by splitting the vote with Chuck Eastwood…NO WAY Vi can win against Smith in the next aldermanic…and Vi needs 2 more years into the next term to make her pension…and Da Mare isn’t to pleased with Vi after her recent antics…Vi should have seen this coming in the 43rd!!!

If you really believe that Martinez handed Victor Reyes his lunch, you are real naive. It was Emil Jones who stuck to Victor and the Hispanic community by pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars for his girl Iris for turning her back on the Latino Caucus. Divide and Conquer baby! And people wonder why Hispanics don’t vote for Obama! So much for coalition building among minorities!

According to printed newspaper reports some in the Latino Caucus were unhappy that Tony Munoz, Official something in the fed investigation, and person who does not speak Spanish, was not named the Asst. Maj. Ldr. And, they are sexist unhappy that the Asst. Maj. Ldr. Spanish speaker is a woman.

Martinez and Avila (and Berrios and Alvarez) were big Hispanic and big anti-HDO/anti-Victor Reyes victories.
Hispanics will not be taken for granted anymore.
