* What’s up on your end?…

So far, omicron is only news because it's new. Try to ignore the screaming, speculative click-bait headlines while we wait for actual news https://t.co/mjHSeAZYVg

  1. I wonder if CVS will update their policies now that the CDC recommends a booster for all people 18+ (might be 16+, can’t remember).

  2. Both the Bulls and Illini basketball are much fun to watch this year. Ayo is doing very well as an NBA rookie.

  3. @Friendly Bob

    Speaking of basketball, in my neck of the woods (Western Illinois), both our men’s and women’s teams are 8-2 to start the season. That’s impressive for the women, since it’s been a few years since they were pretty good (2016-2018 range), but for the men, that kind of start is practically “historic”.

  4. Today is a day I look forward to in december.

    Today is the day the sunsets start getting later in Illinois. Only by a few seconds at first, but it counts.

    For those curious, it happens because of a combination of the fixed way we keep time, and the shape of the orbit around the sun causing the earth to move at different speeds during different times of the year.

    Hey, it’s not all doom and gloom out there. Today there is a little less gloom.

  5. “The Omicron Variant” sounds like a Keanu Reeves movie.

    Thinking of John Lennon and really enjoying the Beatles documentary. So cool that we get to see studio/live song takes that made it onto the album.

  7. Al, carefully. You mentioned planes trains buses and then confined spaces causing surge yet all those forms of transport are covered under the federal mask mandate, which masks are shown to reduce spread. You can’t gave it both ways. Second, itsbeen pretty much agreed that the virus does not spread from touch, so therefore your wipe down and washing is kinda moot in the covid battle…although its always good hygiene practice to wash and wipe.

  8. It’s early, but there are some promising indications that Omicron may be more transmissible but less severe. If we’re lucky, that’s the endgame for COVID–it mutates into a common but mild illness that we get annual shots for but hospitalizes almost no one.

  9. ===albeit preliminary news===

    Ergo speculative. Not interested, and don’t post that stuff here.

  10. The pandemic has caused so much trauma for folks. The data, as folks already cited, tells us that Omicron (I am assuming it is a a Decepticon) is likely less severe and boosters likely give good protection, we are all just so beaten down by every glimmer of hope getting smacked by some new development. And the media does us no favors with the click-bait headlines that amp up anxiety. We need a break from the anxiety that doesn’t require denying science.

  11. I’ve found a more fulfilling way of dealing with the my feelings about the Covidiots and the Covid enabling political party.

    A group of parents and at least one grandparent (me) were disgusted by a harassing anti-vax protest at a pediatric vaccination clinic. They formed a “Cheer Squad” to not-so-much counter-protest, but to provide a buffer and make their trip to get a vaccination a more positive experience. We greet them with bubbles, gifts and cheers. We’ve gotten positive reaction from parents and kids going to the clinics.

  12. TheInvisibleMan-

    Good to meet another almanac geek. According to the Old Farmer’s the 7th, 8th and 9th have the sun setting the earliest.

    The least amount of daylight is the 20th, 21st and 22nd.

    I read the almanac year round, always learning something.

  13. I am another almanac geek and also celebrate that this is the earliest the sun will set and we are on our way back to shorter days around Christmas time.

    Tried to get a tree on Monday: regular garden center now closed and sold for condos and at one of the tree lots at a CPS school: unexpectedly closed due to no one showing up to work. Hope to get a tree before the 25th!

  14. I meant: we are on our way back to longer days around Christmas time.

    I am also wondering it I will need to change my handle if the new Chicago ward maps will means I will no longer be in the 32nd ward. The current ward boundary goes down the middle of my block.

  16. Norseman—the cheering line at the pediatric vaccination clinic is the kind of response needed. These antivaxxers can be so intimidating. Parents want what’s best for their children. The cheer squad had to be a comfort to the families.

  18. Jenner and the milkmaids.I remember a short story from high school about the discovery that Jenner made a couple of centuries ago. ladies that milked cows were called milkmaid. he determined they did not get smallpox. He set out to find out why. in a brilliant bit of research seems these ladies did get a mild infection called milk pox.He then began to give other people that infection.Thus began vaccination.So my question is this does omnicom protect one from covid?
