According to today’s Illinois Times, count the Social Services advocates as opponents of the Governor’s proposed $1 billion one-time tax cuts for citizens. In favor of putting that money into more investments in social services and working toward Ligas compliance–plus a pay increase to those working with people who have developmental disabilities:

We are The People Illinois (complete with banned punctuation) filed a slate of candidates. Candidate for governed proudly lets it be known she voted for Trump and blasts the other gubernatorial candidates for dodging the issue. I wonder who, if anyone, they’ll take votes from.

Not right now. Compared to variants such as Delta and Omicron this new variation – researchers have not adopted the “Deltacron” name officially – appears not likely to spread, said William Lee, the chief science officer at Helix.
“The fact that there is not that much of it, that even the two cases we saw were different, suggests that it’s probably not going to elevate to a variant of concern level” and warrant its own Greek letter name, he told USA TODAY.

Not as well as I would like. Eleven days after being diagnosed with Covid, I tested positive this morning with a home test kit. I do not feel very sick at all now (it was worse), but I would have though due to the declining symptoms and the 11 days, I would be negative. I hate Covid, and I hate arguments against vaccination. Theoretical arguments are why this virus persists, and theoretical arguments have killed 1 million people to date. Argh.

@ Cheryl44 - the story suggests to me, these are a better-looking form of daddy-long-leg spiders. Since the Southern tip of Illinois parallels Richmond, VA, it is possible they might make it to Illinois, and to the land of DeVore. That would be fitting, right? All bluster, no real threat. Thanks for the story.

They could even make it to what would be the Mason-Dixon Line if it was extended into and through Illinois. Basically between the vast majority of Springfield and Chatham, roughly somewhere between I-72 and Woodside Road.
Meaning I might be spared the exposure to those spiders when at work, church, and other places in Springfield but watch out at home, errands, and other things in Chatham.
Illinois Times article from March 2010 which included an old Springfield CVB quote promoting the fact that the Mason-Dixon Line ran “5 miles south of the Old State Capitol.”

But it will be back to the 50s temps on Sunday, after the bitter Saturday cold that cancelled St. Patricks Day parades in Springfield and Decatur (Decatur moved to Sunday, Springfield to Mar. 19).
Maybe you could trek to Havana, Illinois on Sunday and then about 17 more miles northwest on 97 to Cuba, Illinois as an alternative?

Thanks for that info, Chatham. I love Illinois history. I was born and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia, and now live close to the Mississippi (McDonough County). I have a map on my office wall that is from 1763. The map shows that I was born on the eastern-most side of the state of Virginia, and that I will be buried on the western-most side of the state of Virginia. Its is fun to just reflect on how the concept of states and nations evolve over time.
I also teach race relations at the University level. When I first came to Illinois, I wanted to learn about race relations here before teaching my first class at Millikin. So I found an old book, “The History of Negro Servitude in Illinois and of the Slavery Agitation in That State: 1719-1864.” That book has remained one of my all time favorites, and I taught a course around it at Millikin when I worked there. Illinois history is facinating, particularly in the context of the state’s parallel with slavery, and its early governance.

Bruce Weber of Kansas State resigned today after another poor season. I know a lot of Illini fans rip on Weber but I’ll always hold him in high regard. He took SIU to great places before taking Illinois to great places. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere and continue to be a good coach and good person.
