  2. Encouraging crime numbers are out this year in Chicago, compared to a year ago at this time, according to the CPD. Shootings and homicides have decreased. The CPD credits that to more cops on the streets.

  3. Petition challenges are off to an amusing start this year.

The state-level offices still showed as ‘pending’ last night when I was looking through all of them. But the county level ones here are already posted in their full details.

  4. What’s up with the Senate Executive Appointments Committee and Prisoner Review Board appointees?

  5. ===are already posted in their full details===

Yeah, the state board needs to do a much better job of getting that info to the public.

  6. Current campaigns premised on hate. Candidates now run on hate. They tell us what they hate. They tell us who they hate. They tell us why they hate. They invite us to hate with them.

Rather than inspire us to love, and rather than inspire us to become our better selves, politicians today tell us why we should hate others who believe different from us, and those who live different lives than we do. But is it not simply the politicians. In many ways, We the People demand this today. We seek it out, and We the People vote for hate.

Sorry, but some of the campaign clips I am seeing are just evil and mean-spirited.

  7. Dick Durbin doing Illinois proud leading a hearing as dignified as possible but which unfortunately has included some of the meanest questioning ever of a nominee. Starting up again today addressing distortions of yesterday.

  8. Another disappointing finish by the University of Illinois in the NCAA Tournament. Are Brad Underwood’s days numbered?

  9. Easy listening stations/channels are to music as trout farms are to fishing…….GREAT comment in today’s Dale Bowman outdoors column in the Sun Times. does anyone know him? would be great to hang out with him.

  10. Stones, his seat should be getting warm.

Last year he had a NBA All American PG and All Conference Center, this year he had an All American Center. Flamed out both times in the second game.

His record getting to the second weekend of the tourney at Illinois is now 0-2, his overall record of getting to the second weekend is 0-6. He is average at best.

  11. Can’t imagine why anyone driving a high end SUV is lined up for $50 in free gas in Chicago. Makes no sense at all.

People like free stuff and highly discounted stuff.

Pre-Covid the ‘make your own pizza’ place by my office in the loop would do a big promo and people would be lined up half way down the block for a cheap pizza for lunch.

  13. Stones and Give me a Break:

No. Underwood’s days aren’t numbered and he isn’t on the hot seat. Two big ten championships in the last two years. Good recruiting classes coming up, and he’s getting the kind of players he wants–see RJ Melendez.

Comment by Steve Rogers Wednesday, Mar 23, 22 @ 10:03 am

  14. Cockburn is a terrific college player but not much of an NBA prospect. Not on many draft boards. Needs an outside shot. I think a good chance he’ll be back next year so Underwood gets another shot. I don’t think his seat is warm at all after a conference regular season title.

  17. Amalia — clearly you missed the Kavanaugh and Barret confirmation hearings.

Did enjoy Sen. Durbin violating the “3 second” rule when he tried to toss a pill into his mouth, it bounced off and he picked it up off the carpet after a search and got it into his mouth on the second try.

Comment by Behind the Scenes Wednesday, Mar 23, 22 @ 12:27 pm

  18. @ Behind the Scenes, no, I saw those hearings. the questions re the religion of ACBarrett were appropriate as she had used her religion in public forums against abortion rights, naming herself on paper. As for Kavanaugh, there was an accuser, a legitimate question of his actions, and the FBI did not apparently investigate adequately. the conduct of Democrats questioning was not nearly what we are witnessing now from several Republicans. Durbin is answering their garbage with facts and honor.

  19. I’d like to hear more about whether Fritz Kaegi is behind the primary challenge to Rep. Zalewski. His primary opponent is an ally and former staffer of Kaegi’s.

  20. Are there new House or Senate pages or interns starting this week? Or perhaps a short-term screening of this week’s session among high school or college students while most schools (including 186 and Chatham, and a lot of others statewide) seem to all be on Spring Break this week. The last couple days I’ve seen groups of about 15 to 20 youngsters walking between the Capitol and Howlett buildings. Also a few youngsters getting lunch and all dressed up in the Howlett cafeteria (the only complex cafe still open).

  21. Given the NW side of Chicago is home to a large percentage of Ukrainians residing in the US, seems reasonable that many Ukrainian refugees will seek residence here in Illinois. I’m hoping that as a state we are preparing to welcome in a potentially sizable number of Ukrainian people. I haven’t heard too much out there locally specifically referencing this.
