  1. Gutted about Candace Parker leaving. I’d hoped her roots would keep her here- I wish her the best & look forward to watching Sky v Aces games, bittersweetly.

  2. Thank you so much, Isabel. I am looking forward to reading the study listed in the first link. This could be a potential end to the philosophical argument the ISA keeps insisting upon regarding bail.

  3. If you’re used to bumper to bumper traffic, “faster and safer” are not contradictions. Starline being eedlessly contrarian here.

  4. From WBEZ “Also this week, Vallas accepted $50,000 from Shawn Fagan, the top lawyer at Citadel — the hedge fund that moved its headquarters from Chicago to Miami last year — and $25,000 from Ron Gidwitz, who was Illinois finance chair for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and served as U.S. ambassador to Belgium under Trump.” though I’m wondering more about why Vallas had his photo on an AWAKE event flyer…..

  5. Perhaps ‘quicker’ would be a better word in this instance than ‘faster.’ Synchronized lights and other traffic improvements can reduce the commute time without necessarily raising speeds.

  6. Amalia, Bigger than either of those, Vallas took $100K from Sam Zell, who took the Trib into bankruptcy, a real Raunerite deal. And Vallas was at the helm for the non-payment of the city’s pension payment for decades under Daley (well, they did pay for 5 of those 22 years). Outside of that, Vallas is a real man of the people.

  7. Congrats to Marika Josephson and Aaron Kleidon at Scratch Brewing in Ava for once again being nominated for a James Beard Award (the other time was in 2020).

  8. @JamestheIntolerant, where did I miss that? I just don’t get that guy. he seems so brainy and he has some very good past credentials, but then he’s posing with Walter Dudycz and not getting what AWAKE is all about well after we all knew what was up. Vallas clearly seems right wing.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Jan 30, 23 @ 11:21 am

  9. I can’t figure out why no other campaigns bring this up. Daley made a choice, don’t raise property taxes but use the pension payment to stabilize the budget. Geniuses.

  10. The tweet is correct, of course. There’s a remarkable, though intuitive, difference between the mortality rates of drivers/passengers/pedestrians in crashes at lower vs. higher speeds. This is well studied.

The solution to this predicament has seemingly been an arms race to make larger, less fuel efficient vehicles that require larger parking spaces. How many times have you heard someone say they just “feel safer” in an SUV larger than what they truly need? This isn’t much of a solution since there will always be a bigger vehicle. And it makes the mortality rates of pedestrians way worse!

The only real solution to vehicle deaths is traffic-calming measures that physically force drivers to go slower or a society that relies less on cars to get around.

  11. Texas isn’t the only place where a child welfare agency is threatened with contempt

  13. Pritzker’s flip flop on HB 4412 is very disappointing. Terrible piece of legislation.
