  2. I am thinking the Cubs might actually end up being really good this year. They have a tough stretch in the schedule coming up, combined with some major injuries, but in terms of true talent and post-season potential they seem better than we thought they might be. An exciting time on the North Side

  11. The Reds, in just 3 games this season, scored more runs at Guaranteed Rate Field than the White Sox have all season.

  12. A couple days ago, Rob Colletti at South Side Sox wrote what I think is a really well done analysis of why Reinsdorf allows the Sox to be this bad. It’s called “A Game of Groans”. I’ve always known that ownership dudnt care as long as the turned a profit, but this puts it all in black and white. It’s a really depressing read if you are a Sox fan.

  14. How much longer before Steve Stone goes off on White Sox management? Like what happened with him and Dusty Baker 20 years ago that caused him to get tossed from the Cubs booth.

That same line of thinking existed during Trib ownership of the Cubs and is also likely the guiding principle of the McCaskey family.

  17. At this rate the Sox will finish 15-147 for a .093 winning percentage.

Comment by Friendly Bob Adams Monday, Apr 22, 24 @ 2:53 pm

  18. Is there a slaughter rule for when Cubs fans can no longer taunt Sox fans in their misery? I mean, there is none for Sox fans to taunt Cubs fans as we’ve seen in recent years, but thinking perhaps we Cubs fans will have more class because we don’t have the massive inferiority complex chip on our shoulders that Sox fans do.

BTW, did I put enough red meat in this post for Rich? Will this result in lifelong banning?

Comment by New Day Monday, Apr 22, 24 @ 2:58 pm

  19. In 2003, the Detroit Tigers went 43 - 119, setting the record for the worst 162 game MLB record. I don’t see a path where the Sox don’t break that record this year.

Comment by levivotedforjudy Monday, Apr 22, 24 @ 2:59 pm

  20. Paul Sullivan noted that the Cubs are on pace to win 102 games this year. They are also on pace to blow 47 saves. Following the logic, they can’t do both, short of some divine intervention.

It’s too early to use this info to project the entire season. And the Bears first preseason game is August 1, early this year.

So my best advice is ignore the Sox struggles for now and the Cubs good start. Once August gets here, we’ll have football back to distract us until 2025.

  21. It would be more impressive if the White Sox’ number of losses in a row correlated with the Fibonacci sequence.

  22. ===when Cubs fans can no longer taunt Sox fans in their misery?===

I haven’t even noticed that. Too busy grousing about the Sox.

  23. At this point of the season in 1962, the Mets had won 5 games. They were 40-120-1 for the year. The Sox are on a pace to be worse than the 1962 Mets.

  26. Losing can precede a successful rebuild.

When Dale Sveum managed the Cubs, the team was awful. Nonetheless, the team gained important draft picks and made wise selections, signed a few free agents, and were competing for the pennant within two years of Sveum’s dismissal. Three years later, the team won it all.

  32. =Losing can precede a successful rebuild.=

With the Cubs it was obvious what they were doing. Can’t say the same about the White Sox particularly since they themselves seem unable to articulate it themselves.

  34. Nothing helps the “we want a new stadium” whine like putting a AA quality team on the field and having them play to 40% (or less) capacity crowds.

    Genius.

  36. I’ve been following Chicago sports for 40 years and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team so bereft of …. anything. Not just success, but hope or a plan. I mean, the Cubs lost 100+ a few years, but there was hope with Theo. The Bulls were horrible when Jordan left, but the front office had some (wildly misplaced) hope in a plan to rebuild.

The Sox? Their idea of cleaning house is to hire within. Their idea of fan relations is to let their highly popular broadcaster leave. They’re idea of a team is …. whatever the heck this is. Are they even calling it a rebuild?

I dunno, maybe the late era Bill Wirtz Blackhawks were worse off. I don’t really follow hockey. Cubs in the late Wrigley era? That’s just before my time.
