  1. I try not to predict anymore. If the Cubs start slipping it scares me. When they start slipping, they tend to keep slipping until they find themselves out of the running for even a wild card slot!

The White Sox seems to have been up and down all year, but I don’t follow them as well so it’s hard for me to say where they’ll go.

  2. Miller,

It’s simple, as I told you in the beginning of the year, the Cubs are going to outperform the Sox. Nuf said.

Comment by Rep. John Fritchey Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 11:28 am

  3. Since the Brewers and the Twins are trying to finish second, the Cubs will win the WS and Sox will lose in the second round of the playoffs.

Comment by Wumpus Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 11:33 am

  4. The Sox will win the division and the world series if the pitching holds up. The Cubs will not make the playoffs unless Milwaukee takes a complete dive. If they do the Cubs will lose in the first round.

  5. well, the bears are off to a good start and i’m increasingly confident about the fire…

  6. FORTE! FORTE! FORTE! FORTE! FORTE!

Also, I suspect StubHub is a surer route to the World Series than stellar play for either team, but it will be more crushing for Cub Fans, having invested so much of their disposable income in “this is our year,” “it’s gonna happen” and “horry kow” t-shirts and bric-a-brac.

  7. Cubs rebound but are unable to stop the late peaking Cardinals, Go Red Birds!!!!!!
Ozzie pulls off some Wizard stuff and gets his players into the playoffs and into the Series where he mets the Cards. The Cards put another pennant on the wall.

Comment by Irish Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 11:58 am

  8. The Sox and Twins are basically battling for one spot now, as I think the Boston or the Rays will take the wild card.

Quentin is a body blow, but Konerko’s starting to hit, so that might mitigate. Both Sox and Twins are about half/half home and away. I like the Sox to hold on with the stronger pitching and the 2.5 games if they take at least one of the three in Minnesota.

The Cubs will probably win the division and certainly make the playoffs, as a wild card if need be. I think they’ll win the division because the Brewers, except Sabathia, seem out of gas.

The Cubs are still the team to beat in the NL, and I think they’ll win it. Watch out for a hot Houston team to possibly sneak in as a wildcard.

  9. Oh man, I see where this post is going. Can’t we just talk about the Bears making Peyton Manning cry instead? I need something uplifting to read while I’m in class…

  10. Minnesota finally seems to be faltering, after playing over their heads all year. The four games at their indoor playground will be their final shot at catching the inconsistent Sox.

Are the Cubs still playing? Does my calendar say “1969″?

My Ursidae interests at the moment are limited to DaBears.

  11. Mayor Daley may want a world series of the Chicago teams but it starting look like the City of LA ’s 2 teams could go all the way.

Comment by decaturvoter Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 12:54 pm

  12. Rather have the Cubbies hit their slump now. No worries they will come around just in time. Just sorry to see that many Sox fans are cheering against the Cubs to make the playoffs. This rivalrly can be settled once and for all if the Sox make the playoffs and both teams make it to the World Series. If that happens, game on! Until then, let’s not call them flubs, or scrubs, or mullets or missing teef fans.

Comment by Sinister Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 12:54 pm

  13. I was at Wrigley for 2 losses last week and was surprised to see the “Horry Kow” shirts. On a positive side I didn’t see anyone buying or even wearing one. Good job, Cub sheep!
The Brewers set coming up has more meaning than I was hoping for 2 weeks ago–but even if CC catches the Cubs they are still 8 up on the wild card. Like sinister said, get through this rough spot and rest up for the playoffs. AND please NO SAVING ZAMBRANO for a ‘Game 4′ this year!
I hope the Pale Hosers can keep their circus act together enough to make the playoffs—I for one would LOVE to see an all-Chicago WS (as long as the Cubs win). Hard to believe someone under Ozzie’s tutelage would do something in the heat of the moment and have it come back and bite him in the arse.

  14. Here’s hoping for a subway series. Wouldn’t that be a treat - and the Cubs win of course!

Comment by Doug Dobmeyer Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 1:25 pm

  15. All Chicago World Series. Oprah goes out to the mound to throw out the first pitch. When she removes her jacket she’s wearing a White Sox jersey with “Obama” on the back.

Comment by Carl Nyberg Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 1:44 pm

  16. Cubs get in via Wild Card to play the Sox (Red Sox). Cubs take series in 6

Comment by Eurepedes Pantsoff Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 1:45 pm

  17. Both teams win their divisions, Zambrano’s arm falls off the morning of the opening playoff game, and both teams lose in the first round, resulting in lots of humorous profanity from Ozzie.

Comment by BigDog Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 1:49 pm

  18. Those Sox are a never say die kind of team. I think they will make it. I bought my season tickets this year thinking I was going to be watching a third or fourth place division team. No matter what they do at this point I am a happy woman. The Cubs… how could they not make it no matter how bad.

Comment by leigh Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 2:25 pm

  19. I see the rest of the season through the bottom of an empty highball glass, unless the Cubs snap out of it. Which they will. They’ll make it to the Series, then lose to the Rays, starting a new “Florida Curse” story.

Comment by Muskrat Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 2:37 pm

  20. No fear. No chokes. No billy goats. Cubs and White Sox. Subway World Series, baby!

    (Still drinking the koolaide!)

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 2:50 pm

  21. Sox will come up a couple games short, as the wildcard will come out of the east. the Cubs have a nine game lead in the playoff hunt between the division and the wildcard. In order for them to miss the playoffs they’d need a monumental collapse far worse then ‘69. They’d basically would have to lose almost every game from here on.

Comment by Pickles!! Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 2:59 pm

  22. Sox are out of the running…

Cubs are really toying with us now…

Comment by Loop Lady Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 3:04 pm

  23. Pickles, if the CUBS keep playing and pitching the way they have been, they may very well lose every game, despite Soriano hitting 69 home runs this month.

    Both make it.
With Carlos Q. out, they are gonna need pitching. But I think the BoSox make the WS.
CUBS? Who knows how far they’ll go. I say WS, but they will lose there. In 5.

  24. Pretty sure the Flubs were doomed when StatewideTom announced he wanted to play shortstop. If he fields like he hits the FLubs are goners

Comment by EmptySuitsonParade Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 3:34 pm

  25. Slow and steady wins the race, right? Remember the tortoise and the hare? The Cubs are very much like the hare - flashy, fast, and hurried. The White Sox can be likened to the tortoise, steadfast constant, and dependable. Never forget ‘05, folks! GO WHITE SOX!

  26. What’s all this subway series stuff ? Have I missed out on the construction of the subway from Chicago to St. Louis ?

    Comment by A Citizen Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 3:41 pm

  27. A Citizen: Keep drinking that KTRS koolaid! Just be thankful you didn’t do anything rash this season like make a trade for a good pitcher…

  28. Loop Lady,

How do you figure the Sox are out of the running?

  29. Another drive-by comment from a Cub Fan.

  30. Mets closer out for the season, Flubs get another lucky break.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 5:02 pm

  31. Rich - Cubs Don’t need “another lucky break”. They have had the best team all year. They are going to the WS.

Comment by Eurepedes Pantsoff Monday, Sep 8, 08 @ 6:42 pm

  32. All Chicago World Series. Oprah goes out to the mound to throw out the first pitch. When she removes her jacket she’s wearing a White Sox jersey with “Obama” on the back.

Hopefully on Free Commerative Baseball night
