Unclear on the concept

Posted in:

* I just don’t get the logic here. The Sun-Times slams Mayor Daley for warning Wrigleyville taverns and clubs to cut off serving booze after the 7th inning during the upcoming playoffs….

Our nanny-state mayor is at it again, this time calling on every bar and restaurant in Wrigleyville to stop serving booze during the late innings of big Cubs games.

The very next graf shows, however, that the Sun-Times certainly understands the ugly situation outside of that decrepit park…

As if an hour or so of Prohibition-light will discourage the staggerers, the brawlers, the bawlers, the brayers, the upchuckers and the public urinaters. And that’s just the fair-weather fans.

* Yet, on the same editorial page, they endorse Sen. James Meeks’ plan to have Chicago Public School students hold hands in a ring around Cub Park during a playoff game. And here’s the kicker line

(S)tudents will arrive at Wrigley after school and leave early enough to avoid the crowds leaving the park and rest up for school the next day.

Um, OK. But what about all the “staggerers, the brawlers, the bawlers, the brayers, the upchuckers and the public urinaters” outside the park at the taverns and in the streets while this childrens’ protest is taking place?

I just don’t get it.

  1. Perhaps this is a passive-agressive move by Daley - to “punish” Cubs fans for clinching the Division by cutting off thier liquor early. He is a devoted Whites Sox fan as am I and we need something to distract us during the nail-biting series with Minesota. Can you blame him?

  2. Meeks must want to have an injury occur to a child. Why would he put those kids in such an atmosphere? He is getting the press he wants now. Hold hands around a museum, an establishment where learning can occur, and then maybe wander inside and learn something.

    Use common sense, come on.

  3. Rich, quit calling it Cub Park. It’s a zoo, I understand, but someone might produce a nasty piece on you and your similarities to Jeff Gordon.

  4. He’s a Sox fan. He can call it what he whats. lol

  5. Speaking of that team…a better idea might be to have Meeks take the kids to the South Side and play ring-around-the-rosie around the Sox Park next week during the playoffs. That place will be empty and not be a threat to injury.

  6. The City should block off the streets in the area and charge admission just to be in the blocked off area-kinda like they do at all the street fairs ect. They should then use that money to pay for added security.

It appears the circus is coming to town so you may as well accept it, have fun with it but keep it safe.

  7. For a guy who died almost 40 years ago, Saul Alinsky and his protest methods sure seem to be all the rage with South Side politicians.

  8. Somebody should give Meeks a Xanax.

  9. I think their point is that Daley cannot simply change these establishments’ hours by personal decree. He at least has to go through the motions of getting the “approval” of his rubber stamp city council.

  10. Rich, calm downa nd let it go! FOcus your positive energies on the Sox and their issues in MN. We all know Wrigley stinks, but the team playing there will be playing in October, guaranteed.

  11. Emperor Daley is out-of-control. As his father might have said, the police will be there to “preserve disorder” on the streets of Wrigleyville.

If Daley succeeds in imposing his imperious will upon the bars and restaurants of Wrigleyville, I would simply have a fire sale on extra “shots/beers” before the alcohol moratorium begins. The drunkards will simply drink faster and sooner, rather than lesser amounts of alcohol.

Need I add that the Emperor has no clothes - i.e. - a legal leg to stand on. Anarchy will prevail in Wrigleyville, unless the Emperor declares martial law and issues “shoot-to-kill” orders for all inebriated revelers traversing the public ways of Wrigleyville and disturbing our peace and tranquility.

All this being said, I have no sympathy for anyone engaging in riotous or destructive behavior to celebrate victory or drwon thier sorrows. Lock them up and throw away the key!! A little waterboarding might be appropriate - just enough to sober them up.

  13. KFan, that wasn’t snark. That was the truth.

  14. You know what else is the truth… We’s be in da playoffs, and da sox ain’t.

  15. Little League playoffs don’t count.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 25, 08 @ 12:08 pm

  16. I’d like to see the sox beat out the Brewers or the Cardinals…they’re having enough trouble with the Twins.

Comment by Kevin Fanning Thursday, Sep 25, 08 @ 12:11 pm

  17. Rich, you’ve obviously never lived near Sox Park. If you did, you’d have dead grass from all the drunks urinating in your yard …

Comment by Snidely Whiplash Thursday, Sep 25, 08 @ 12:21 pm

  18. I’m lost on what Meek’s goal is? Isn’t he in the majority? Can he not get a bill called?

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Sep 25, 08 @ 12:34 pm

  19. Equal Protection, anyone?
What is good for the Cub fans should be equally applied to the Sox fans as well.
Oh wait, there really aren’t that many places to get a drink around US Comisk-ullar Field.
Oh yes, and the Twins are going to supplant the Sox in the playoffs by Sunday anyway.
    Nevermind.

  20. You can probably get some crack outside of the Cell.

Rich, you confuse me. You are a straight shooter when it comes to politcal stuff on this site (which is what matters). But when it comes to baseball, you are a rabid maniac. It is not a secret, but if the Sox don’t come through and make the Playoffs, I fear you will become like the Dailykos.

Comment by Wumpus Thursday, Sep 25, 08 @ 2:17 pm

  21. Dude, do you know how difficult it is to keep all this rage inside and attempt to be even-handed while I watch the state crumble? Cub-bashing is my pressure valve.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 25, 08 @ 2:19 pm

  22. Seems to me getting cub fans to not drink would be about as easy counting hairs on a gnat’s hind end.
If, by whatever luck you cub fans are holding onto, they end up winning the whole thing, the rioters, uh celebrators, will probably end up tearing that decrepit old hole down anyway. Hey not only would the cub’s value go up from the series win, the baggage that is Wrigley field would no longer be a liability in the cubs sale. Seems a little short sighted of da mayor..
