Who is Peter O’Malley?
Archpundit asked the same question of his readers after spotting some comments posted over here about O’Malley’s likely primary bid against Christine Cegelis.
Cegelis, of course, is the Democrat who lost to Henry Hyde last time around and is planning another run. I don’t know much about O’Malley, but he comes highly recommended by a good friend of mine.
Also, does he have a chance in the primary?

I know Pete O’Malley and he is a good guy. I think his probelm is that he started too late, that is to say he still has not started. Cegelis is quickly becoming the candidate to beat and is gathering support from dems all over the state.
I do want to point a few things out. Cegelis did well in her district because Kerry did suprising well. She ran about 2 points behind Kerry. This is not a sign of a good campaign, but rather an example of how canidates can geta bump from the top of the ticket. (Not to mention the Obama bump). Tari Renner (who ran against Weller) also ran 2 points behind his opponent. Cegelis’ race was not impressive, nor unique.
I am a Dem and I pray to God that we don’t spend any money in this district. We will NOT win. If we were running against Hyde, we would have a chance, but there is NO way we can win. (for those of you who are going to yell at me, show me numbers to prove me wrong).
We have a better chance looking at LaHood’s seat where we can run a socially moderate dem who might have a chance.
Ah, I digress…

Pete has a better grasp of the salient issues that move the 6th Congressional. Ms Cegelis is a nice lady who unfortunately is locked into a one dimensional left of center view that will never exceed 45 percent of the vote.

Not to get off topic but I’m surprised there has been little discussion about Congressman Lane Evans’ chances in the next election.
His last opponent, Andrea Zinga, was a horrible candidate but she did germinate with some success the idea of the congressman’s health and the toll his Parkinson’s has taken (which is little.)
And now here is Henry Hyde saying he feels he can’t be an effective legislator, essentially, due to his health.
There may be as many as three candidates in 17th District’s Republican primary, which means plenty of campaigning, media coverage and fundraising– whereas as the Evans political organization has seen better days, or so I have heard.
Illinois will also be receiving enormous attention from the national GOP because of Bean’s re-election, LaHood’s run for governor and now Hyde’s open seat.
It might just be the perfect storm to oust the state’s senior House Democrat.

Anon- Yes Lane Evans could be vulnerable, if his office did not provide above average to excellent constituent service to his district the last decade plus; he is vulnerable if every little old lady, veteran, union man/woman (which makes up 65% of the vote in the 17th) dies tomorrow; he would be vulnerable; and he would be vulnerable if the republican candidate #1 was not a well documented slum landlord in the greater QC area, and republican candidate #2 wasn’t composing a campaign around his nickname “Gilligan” or republican candidate #3 Andrea Lane Zinga, who ran a terrible race two years ago. The only way Lane Evans is vulnerable is in a democratic primary, and though rumblings of that happening have materialized, don’t look for an opponent this primary season.

I dont’ know anything about O’Malley, so I want to get that out of the way right now.
I saw someone “Anonymous” post about Lane Evans, who is about one of the most decent people I’ve ever met. He might have an older following, but his political organization is pretty well run, and the number of energetic young people who work for him are amazing. I’ve assisted on his campaign before and I don’t even live in his district. As long as his opponent makes the Parkinsons the focus of the campaign, they won’t have a chance of winning. They’ll need to show where he hasn’t represented his district well, and frankly I don’t think that’s going to happen. I don’t think I could keep the schedule that man has.
