Hyde to retire

Posted in:

This was posted on Henry Hyde’s site today:

I have decided not to run for re-election to Congress in 2006. Despite this difficult decision, I still have a job to do through 2006, including a lot of important work to accomplish as Chairman of the House International Relations Committee. The committee’s upcoming schedule includes hearings and legislation about the UN Oil for Food scandal, Arms Export Laws and U.S. public diplomacy efforts abroad, and more. The fiscal 2006 budget process also is in full swing, which means there is a lot of work to do.

At the end of this term, I will have served 32 years in office as representative of the Sixth Congressional District of Illinois. I want to thank the people in my district for their support over the years. I am grateful for the many friends who have supported me since the beginning of my career and the many who have joined with me over the years.

  1. Thank you, Congressman. The right words of gratitude escape me. Your eloquence and thoughtfulness will be missed. A true statesman.

  2. Congressman Hyde…God bless and best of luck in your coming retirement. Genuine thanks for your years of tireless, um, well let’s just admit it your “dag-gum-it-I’m-so-damned-tired” service.

You represented Republicans well in your district - not only for propping-up the incompetent Bush Administration in recent years, but for wasting millions of federal taxdollars persecuting President Clinton over a you-know-what. Kudos Hank!

Enough about the retired incumbent. I’m looking forward to watching the General Election battle for this particular district…that’s gonna be fun!

  4. Just having fun!

Very best wishes to the Congressman. Might not like his politics, but he WAS a gentleman.

  5. People can disagree on issues, but he did his state proud over his long service.

  6. Don’t forget his “youthful discretion” at the ripe age of 35. What a jack—! I bet that most “liberal” newsmedia won’t even mention that he prosecuted a sitting president over a sexual affair without mentioning his defense of his own affair. But hey, he’s a good Catholic, right? I want my 40 million dollars back! Don’t let the door hit you Henry. First Crane, now Hyde!

  8. He also got a free pass for giving legislative scholarships to the children of the woman he had the “youthful indiscretion” with. No one reported it except for Dick Kay at Ch. 5. That said, I a Dem that always kinda liked the guy.

  9. This is Roskam’s to lose

  10. I heard that Con. Kirk is getting behind Ronald Krol to run for this seat. Much of the establishment, such as former Gov. Jim Thompson and presumptive Secretary of State nominee Dan Rutherford are also supporting his candidacy

  11. I would rather be behind RonnieK than in front of him

  12. My ONLY impression of Hyde is the Clinton persecut–I mean, prosecution in the 90s…
As he sat up in his almighty chair, I couldn’t help but cringe at the fact that the old man had the nerve to say some of the things he said when he too, although not reported, was not loyal to his family and wife…
