Doug Scott interview

Posted in:

There’s a very good, long Q&A with outgoing Rockford Mayor Doug Scott in today’s Journal Register-Star.

Question: Do you have any regrets or, looking back on the race, would you have done anything differently?

I don’t know. I’ve thought about that a little bit. I wouldn’t have done differently with respect to negative ads. I wouldn’t have done that differently. Other than that, there’s always little things that you could do. I don’t really want to detail them, but there are little things that we could have done differently. But for the most part in terms of the effort, to use the sports analogy of leaving it all out on the field, we did that. And so I don’t look back at it and say, “Oh gosh, you know, if I’d only done this.” First of all, the margin (of Morrissey’s victory) was too large for you to do that. And second, we not only made the decisions at the time that we thought were right, but we had a great team and we executed them. The fact that it didn’t turn out right, I can’t fault the effort or the decisions that we made.

It’s an honest, frank interview, but I’m not sure if Scott understands yet what happened to him last week.

  3. I like Doug Scott, and count myself among those who would like to see him run for Congress or statewide office someday.

But if he’s not willing to criticize his opponents, he can’t expect to win those races. Doug needs to give voters more credit: we draw a distinction between fair criticisms of your opponents’ record or lack of one, and ads like swift boat veterans, Oberweis’s helo flight, or Willie Horton.

To quote Kenny Rogers from The Coward of the County, “Sometimes you’ve got to fight when you’re a man.”

Doug: We need to know that you’re going to stand up and fight for yourself, and for us.

  4. Note for edit: the Journal Star is in Peoria, the Register Star is in Rockford.
