“Orange is now my favorite color,†said Governor Rod Blagojevich, who declared April 5, 2005 to be Fighting Illini Day.
Now that he’s so hot about the Illini, do you think he’ll answer questions about the chief?

He was booed, and it wasnt just the students, it was the residents of Champaign-Urbana that were also booing. He just looked so out of place. When he tried to show people he wasnt just jumping on the bandwagon by naming various highlights of the season you could tell that someone had just written them for him and he was not recalling events from memory. Contrary to what I am sure his people tell him, people down here arent dumb, and they can spot a phony person when they see it

Blagojevich saw a positive in the season’s end. He said he now could go back to work running the state. Several fans jeered. TRIBUNE

There were about 20,000 people at the rally, and I’d guess about 5,000 people applauded out of respect when Blago was introduced, and about 10,000 booed. A lot. And they weren’t students….they were voters. The booing continued while he spoke…but then trailed off. However, the biggest boos came when Blago announced that since the season was over, he could “go back to his job as Governor.” The look of suprise and embarrassment on his face was…well…classic Blagojevich. The biggest cheers came when he said he thought Illini Coach Bruce Weber would beat him if he ran for governor. Champaign County clearly seems not to be a Blagojecounty. - BKW

I was at the rally - the governor was definitely booed, easily 3 out of 4 people were booing loudly!
Agree with the previous post - the vast majority of people booing were not students - they were local families…ofcourse the students booed as well - but not like the local residents were!

It’s unlikely that local voters, all of whom depend on the university for their livelihood, have forgotten the Governor’s incessant university bashing from his first two years in office, especially since it was accompanied by efforts to cut U of I funding.
Voters in C-U know how to hold a grudge, especially against an out-of-towner.
By the way, those early quotes from Rod are going to make nasty commercials juxtaposed with team pictures. Ouch.

Let’s face it, that rally was nothing less than a sinister plot hatched by Capitol Fax to embarrass the greatest governor Illinois has ever seen. I can’t believe Rich Miller invited his subscribers to a U of I rally just to “boo” the governor.

As a student at the U. of I. and as an attendee at last night’s rally, I can confirm that students booed him.
I really think that HotRod is out of touch with even his democratic liberal base. He was booed twice (not like the BRUUUUUUUCE chant, but actually BOOED) by the students. This is a really bad sign for Blagojevich….

im not surprised that blago was booed in champaign. the cuts to higher ed and the pension reform has threatened the very livlihood of the lifeblood of that city. wait till those kids grow up and realize that they will be paying for their profs pensions until they die, and that the man they booed was trying to relievethem of that burden.

Well, actually, I had never even CONSIDERED the option that he would go there. This rally was to show support for the players, the fans, the people of C-U…..not the politicos. But, when has Roddog ever thought about others- everything is a potential political event, a chance to mug for the TV, flesh to press (pun intended)? His handlers and hanger-on’s simply aren’t capable of stopping themselves at looking at EVERYTHING as a “potential for gain for Rod.”
