Trouble for Mike Jacobs?

Posted in:

Bernie Schoenburg writes that the Senate Repubs are looking for a candidate against state Sen. Mike Jacobs.

The three GOP candidates for U.S. House from the 17th Congressional District have been approached by Illinois Senate Republican leaders to consider switching gears and running against state Sen. MIKE JACOBS, D-East Moline.

Jacobs was named to the seat to replace his father, former Sen. DENNY JACOBS, in February. […]

“He’s in an appointed position,” said PATTY SCHUH, spokeswoman for Senate GOP Leader FRANK WATSON of Greenville. “And we do not have a shortage of candidates willing to take on Democrats across the state because no one likes the direction this state is going.”

  2. Frank Watson better worry about races he can win. He is already in trouble…

    Watson:
    Worst. Minority Leader. Ever.

  3. Isn’t the real question what Vandalia Frank and his posse would see as issues. they probably thought the Rosa Parks comparison was on track.

  4. Has there been any talk about a challenger to Jacobs in the Democratic Primary?

Comment by Randall Sherman Thursday, Dec 1, 05 @ 4:40 pm

  5. Randall
    You and the primaries! Geez.

    Are you happy with ANYONE????

  6. What a joke - no one can beat a Jacobs in Rock Island County. Give it up, Sieben and Watson.
Although the new Senator has hit a few speed bumps this year, he’s also known for hustling and getting things done.

  7. How dare Vandalia Frank challenge the hegemony of the Democrats!

As a prominent Chicago machine guy once said: Nepotism works!

  8. “Hit a few speed bumps”?

The man is barely smart enough to drive.

  9. The Dems have a serious problem for a group that talks about inequities so much.

Jacobs gets his son appointed (I disagree that he is dumb - that is not accurate at all).
Vic Demuzio is replaced by his wife.
    Richie Daley follows his dad.
Tom Dart is appointed Sheriff despite any policing experience.
Lisa Madigan is elected AG despite having tried one single case OR motion.
    Jackson Jr. gets into Congress.
    Lipinski gets his father’s seat.
    Dan Hynes walked into office.
The Burke family, the Joyce family, the Cullerton family, the Berrios family . . the list goes on and on and I didn’t even get to Blago-Mell and Fritchey-Banks indirect type of familial links.

Some of these people are dedicated public servants to be sure, but if this stuff went on with Republican officeholders, Dems would be screaming bloody murder.

But this has become par for the course nationwide. Look at the Gores, the Clintons, the Kennedys, the Landrieus, the Cuomos, the (Adlai) Stevensons, the Humphreys, and now even Jimmy Carter is pushing his kid for office.

Why would I work on Dem politics? My dad was a nobody and so nobody will ever support me for office.

(The only GOP dynasty I am aware of is the Bush family and W survived the very worst thrown at him and still won the Governorship of Texas twice and the Presidency twice.)

  10. Schoenburg also writes about a poll that shows Blagojevich beating every republican candidate by wide margins.

  11. “Schoenburg also writes about a poll that shows Blagojevich beating every republican candidate by wide margins.”

That poll was by McKeon. Consider the source.

  12. Senator Denny Jacobs, and now Senator Mike Jacobs are aggressive, hard working, sometimes vulgar, but always proactive Democrats in Western Illinois. Mike will win a full term, and prove he belongs. Just some growing pains here, thats all.

  13. I knew of Mike Jacobs when he worked(?) for the Secretary of State’s Office. He didn’t appear to be all that sharp and some of his close pals in that office were just plain dumb.
If Western Illinois votes him in to take Daddy’s throne, then they deserve what they get.

  14. Nepotism? May as well be the british monarchy with all the (related) appointees about.

The real question is, who would Rosa Parks vote for?

  15. Senator Mike needs a big ol’ reality check. He really has distorted view of what the role of a senator is, and seems like he’s truly floundering and just trying to act like what he thinks a senator acts like, strutting and crowing as if if he convinces himself he’s a great senator, then everyone else will believe it too.

He was first obsessed with fundraising, then obsessed with insisting he was a great senator and claiming credit for things that would have happened anyway even if he’d been lost in Mongolia. Not just claiming credit, obnoxiously BOASTING about this crap. (Claiming a huge “victory” when Madigan waved off primary challengers, etc.)

The guy is a hack, absolutely cynical and craven, but he’s in the family business. It’s like the bosses son taking over the business and the son doesn’t know beans. Sure, he’ll learn eventually, but that doesn’t mean he’s a good businessman nor does it mean he’s healthy for the district.

And he DOES have a primary challenger, Paul Rumler, a Moline native in his 20’s who was a staffer for three congressmen in D.C. including Steny Hower.
He’s got a web page but I don’t have the URL at the moment.

What’s up with Bernie? He ignores the Surveyusa polls but prints one from that hack Mckeon? He’s really slacking lately.

  20. Funny how Patty Schuh mentions how Jacobs is appointed. Message to Frank Watson: State Sen. AJ Wilhelmi (D-Joliet) also got appointed, why haven’t you found an opponent for him?

  21. Living in the QC, I can tell you that Mike is in trouble. I don’t think the GOP has a chance, but his primary challenger (Paul Rumler) is really building some steam. Yard signs are popping up everywhere, and the word around the campfire is that the party has had it with Jacobs.

Somebody asked about the URL, here it is, or just google “Paul Rumler”:

    www.paulrumler.com

Looks like a smart guy. He graduated Summa Cum Laude, and I also found that he won a Wall Street Journal award for achievement in Economics.

    Rumler’s got my vote.

  22. I have been following Mike for about ten years now. He has his fathers spirit and political skill. Have no fear, he will win. Also, anyone who thinks a Rep. has a snow balls chance in hell to win Rock Island needs to open their eyes.

  23. Mike’s comments at the end of Bernie’s column are indicative of a spoiled and annointed politician. Do sons and daughters of prominent politicians need to be reminded that we live in a democracy?
