* Background on the Bears’ third round draft pick…
Third-round DT Jarron Gilbert has excellent athleticism and all the physical tools. His athleticism has been displayed on YouTube since last summer when he jumped completely out of the shallow end of a pool.
“Our strength coach had told us that he heard a story of Adam Archuleta jumping out of a pool, and everybody went crazy and thought it was unbelievable,” Gilbert said. “I went out there and tried it and got it on the first try. Then I had to put it on film.”

I did that once in 4th grade…when my brother got a sudden case of ‘intestinal distress’.
Seriously, jumping out of a pool shows power, but if he has speed, jukes, and good hands, then he will be in many more video’s - on the football field, and all the better for us Bear fans. We need receivers.

Isn’t YouTube great? Proving yet another urban legend. Unless this is edited like those “Pick Me” commercials for fantasy football. I always thought it’d be hilarious to have political ads in that style. “Vote for me” as Quinn crashes through a wall during a bill signing. Or “Vote for me” as Madigan leaps from the House floor to the Speaker’s chair.

There are countless NFL stars who didn’t get picked in the first or second rounds. Joe Montana. Tom Brady. John Stallworth. Shannon Sharpe. So there is hope that Angelo’s proven talent for spotting mid-round value pays off.
But almost no draft can be honestly graded til at least a few years into the respective careers of the draftees…with the historical exception of the Ricky Williams and Herschel Walker draft-pick trade fiascos.

It’s the Jay Culter draft; that makes it a great one.
Uncharacteristically bold move by the Bears. He cost a lot; two 1s, a 3, and a serviceable starting quarterback, but 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterbacks don’t become available often. You can count the great Bear quarterbacks of all time on one finger (Luckman). Gotta pay to play.
Orlando Pace was a great signing if he’s got a couple of years in the tank.
Angelo seems to pick better in the later rounds and it looks like he got some value here. I like Gilbert and the other d-lineman as well; 280 and runs a 4.5.
Lots of wide receivers, which is good. I like the kid from Oklahoma, and the one from Abilene runs a 4.3. Can’t coach speed.
Top corner out of the SEC. Bears like those smart kids out of Vandy.
The Bears are obviously expecting Marinelli to turn around a defense that’s been living on its reputation the last couple of years. We’ll see. They’re all a year older, and there are glaring holes at both safety positions. You can’t run that Tampa 2 without top safety play.
But with any luck, the Bears now have their best quarterback ever, and he’ll be there for 10 years.

Compare that feat to the ‘Fridge Perry doing a standing jump from the floor to a table top, TEN TIMES in a row. That shows enormous strength. A moment of silence for Fridge’s recovery from his current illness.

Adam Archuleta was a desperation signing by Lovie. Clearly the guy was done, and did nothing for us last year. But, he was a good player for almost 10 years in the NFL - that says a lot.

They also made a very smart post-draft signing of Mizzou backup QB Chase Patton. The guy could be a great QB someday if we need him.

I agree w/ Wordslinger. This draft was all about Jay Culter. You have to give the Bears credit for making a bold move.
As for our draft picks - we’ll just have to wait and see. If we get a couple of contributors out of that bunch I would be very happy.

I can jump from the ground into a pool. Hopefully, his stint with the Bears will be more fruitful than Archuletta’s.
Until recently, the bears had 50% luck in the first round and we will see how williams rebounds. I am particularly happy with the pick of MArcus Freeman of tOSU
