* ADDED: WGN-AM drops ‘Kathy & Judy’

WGN-AM 720 this morning announced it is discontinuing the “Kathy & Judy” show, the ground-breaking mid-morning coffee klatch that former Chicago newspaper columnists Kathy O’Malley and Judy Markey hosted for 20 years.

But state records show the Illinois Commerce Commission stripped Caruso’s company of authority to operate as a trucking firm in January for lack of insurance. Caruso did not have licensed trucks and, in at least one case, hired another company to do its share of a project at O’Hare.

Caruso could not be reached for comment. Her company’s phones are disconnected, and she did not reply to e-mail.

Since the federal corruption charges were filed last month, city officials have begun auditing payments to Veronica Contracting and have sought proof Caruso is still in business. A Daley administration spokeswoman said Caruso recently told city officials that her company remains in business. The firm remains certified to do work for the city.

  1. UI Global Campus has been a boondoggle from the start, and then President White gave the people who ran this waste of a program bonuses!
    Fire President White!

  2. Fitz picks an odd time to encourage businesses to hire felons as a way to reduce recidivism.

    Of course, what he says has merit, but it’s a buyer’s market out there.

    I’m going up to one of my favorite CCC projects this weekend, Ludington State Park in Mchigan, so I’ll probably be on my soapbox about how similar projects could be used to teach at-risk kids some work ethic and self-esteem before they’re tempted to join the ranks of the 70,000 to 100,000 Chicago gang members.

  3. what wordslinger said on the odd timing of Fitzgerald.

    in Chicago there are a fair amount of things for kids to do….some smart web site should list all the agencies and location of activities. it is true that gang lines sometimes prevent kids from walking to things, but every chicago neighborhood has a library, public schools and public parks, all with activities. i don’t really buy into “there’s nothing for kids to do” but I do get that there are not enough jobs for anyone, although I don’t think kids should work to pay for the latest toys and fashions.

    with kids, it’s time for the adults in their lives to get them to stop wanting so many objects. overly acquisitive behavior does not help anyone of any income level.

  4. The problem I see with kids in Chicago, and my neighborhood, is many parents, many times single parents are working all the time. I see mostly single Mom’s working more than one job, thus leaving the kids home alone a lot. This is part of the problem (unsupervised kids).

  5. I’m getting very tired of the press and thr reform commission’s high and mighty attitude. People, wake up!! This is ridiculous. It appears the General Assembly could pass a bill applying the death penalty to any person who violates the state’s ethics laws and the press would still complain they didn’t do enough. It doesn’t matter if they pass contribution limits and resructure the entire government. It wouldn’t be enough.

    I will admit the process is long and sometimes ridiculous, but the fact that the General Assembly is getting wacked left and right for not doing something the exact way Pat Collins wants it or not doing enough. Yesterday the House passed probably the best ethics bill in the country. Did the press highlight that? No. They just complain that a draft of FOIA isn’t the bill they want. Maybe every record should be released, and maybe people who use state services should have the peace of mind that they’re personal information is protected. I get that the press wants documents - it makes their life easier. But instead of trying to find common ground they report that the general assembly is ignoring all reforms. They don’t report that the procurement bill all but eliminates the past practice of steering contratcs to friends.

    These are all good things and huge changes. Where are those stories? Instead everyone wants to focus on knit picking. These people, both members and staff, have been working nonstop for months to give the people reform while trying to balance the best interest of everyone. Maybe it is time to cut them some slack. They’re doing the best they can to balance everyones concerns and it is not because special interest groups are swaying them. Its because its the right thing to do.

  6. 50-cents? Try 77-cents in less than 2 weeks in Springfield. But we’re assured there’s no collusion or price-fixing going on. Yeah, right…

  7. I guess that Kathy and Judy messed with Madigan’s press secretary Steve Brown at the end of their show on Wednesday and now they are gone. Conspiracy theory, anyone?

    Next thing you and all of the “Madigan haters” will claim the speaker is responseble for Gitmo!

  9. === …claim the speaker is responseble for Gitmo!===

    Well the speaker buys apples, which helps to fund the produe industry. the produce industry provides produce which is shipped to Gitmo to feed the detainees. Without food they would have to shut it down…..
