Statement from Dan Hynes’ Campaign Spokesman Mike Rendina on Governor Quinn’s Negative Attack
“Governor Quinn is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. After Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn spent 6 years in silence watching Rod Blagojevich drive our state into a ditch it is puzzling that he describes a 50% income tax increase on Illinois families as leadership. Comptroller Hynes sent Governor Quinn two letters this past year laying out $1.2 billion in cuts along with alternative revenue sources and urged the Governor not to incite panic in order to pass a 50% tax increase on the backs of working families. While Quinn flip-flopped on his own plans for the last six months, he couldn’t find the time to read either letter.”

The voters are going to get so sick and tired of all this negativity, bickering, and carping by all the Dems that they will vote a Republican in just for a fresh start to recovery. And besides, the Republicans are just nice guys . . . and gals!

Hynes has got a quiver full of arrows. Quinn should have stayed on his positive messages for a few more months before picking a fight with the guy who can beat him.
Quinn should be talking about Capital=jobs and all his other feel good messages. Accusing your opponent of staying on the sidelines doesn’t sound like a winning message to me.
Having the courage to push for a tax increase reminds me of another candidate for governor who was a “straight shooter”.

Quinn’s mistakes, in no particular order:
1) Making the election about his tax increase;
2) Being so obviously wrong on the facts;
3) Blaming the other guy for not governing when you are, in fact, The Governor.
Did I miss anything?

Interesting, back in Feb Hynes tried to actually discuss the budget with Quinn, and Quinn refused the discussion….

Ghost, I think that’s a mischaracterization of the story. Quinn wouldn’t talk to reporters, not Hynes. Read down two grafs…

I agree- nice response without it breaking into emotionally charged rhetoric. Vanilla as you may see him- Hynes can be seen as the voice of reason amongst a group of fighting tweens if he pushes back but doesn’t get sucked in- It could- it is too early to go negative.

You know, I make it a habit never to start watching American Idol while the early eliminations are going on and only tune in for the REAL competition between the final six or so. I’m starting to think that may be a good approach for the 2010 elections, too

Please spell out for us how you think Hynes ran our ship of state in the iceberg?
The Comptroller’s office (whether R or D) neither proposes budgets nor votes on budgets.
Regardless, Hynes did send up several red flags (and did so while Blago was gov too) pointing out where he thought finances were going out of whack and suggestions on how to improve.
But he has no legal stick with which to beat some sense into the gov’s office or legislature.

I wish that were so…but the reality is that paid media, particularly at the rate blago was buying it, overshadows earned media everytime. But at least Hynes starts with a big financial advantage. That should make a huge diffence.

Wow, that’s a fastball at Quinn’s teeth. Sounds like Hynes has entrenched his position on the income tax increase. While I think a slightly softer, classier, more stately reply would have been more appropriate, this counters some impressions held of Hynes, namely that he’s a boring, push-over tinkerbell.

It seems like both these guys have tin ears to the concerns of regular Illinoisans. Maybe they should sit in the cheap seats at the Cell or take a subway ride without the press corps as escorts and they will hear that people think the entire ship of state has been corrupted and their circular firing squad remarks today only adds to that thinking. Quinn waxed poetic about kennedy today, but let his teeth show against Hynes. typical of a man without the dicipline to win a difficult modern media campaign. Hynes, stiill remebering his 17% in 2004, wants to throw off the milk toast moniker and come out fighting. Why I oughta, why I oughta … Positively Popeyean

Both Hynds and Quinn have me convinced that they are both right regarding their allegations about each other. Thanks, fellas! Now I know that I shouldn’t vote for either one of you for Governor of Illinois on November 2, 2010. You both certainly managed to convince me that you are both incompetent political hacks. Are you telling us that we should vote Republican so that Illinois can correct the horrible financial mess that you Democrats have left us with? Okay, a Republican candidate is obviously the way to vote this next election for real “Change”.

So, by Quinn’s logic, he would have welcomed Hynes’ leadership and input into crafting a budget that Quinn would have been accountable for managing? That makes no logical sense. Quinn is quickly approaching the same problems his predecessor had: 1) a short memory; and 2) he can’t distinguish between campaiging and governing.
After years of massive PR machines in the Governor’s office, including Quinn, it would be refreshing to see someone like Hynes or Bill Brady who is more interested in solving problems than issuing press releases.

Hynes is boring. Quinn’s right. I certainly can’t come up with any recollections of where Hynes was on the Budget. Also, Hynes has his problems with the cemeteries. All Quinn has to do is run a few commercials on all the tough cemetery oversight legislation Hynes had sponsored as Comptroller the last several years. The answer is none. It gets just a little old and boring that the cemetery lobby was just so tough. Are you a leader or what? Quinn will have some problems with the tax increase issue, but he should have no problem with Hynes in the Dem Primary.
