Hynes and Quinn go at it again

Posted in:

* From an e-mail sent today by the “Hynes campaign team” to supporters…

Dear Friends,

That didn’t take long. With little more than six months until the primary election and the field for the gubernatorial race yet to be settled, Pat Quinn has launched a negative, misleading attack against Dan.

While Governor Quinn is entitled to his own opinion, he’s not entitled to his own facts. In the past six months, Comptroller Hynes sent Governor Quinn two letters outlining alternative sources of revenue and $1.2 billion in spending reductions. Instead of reading Dan’s letters Governor Quinn pushed for a 50% tax hike on the backs of working families. In a TV appearance yesterday, he falsely claimed Dan was a “no show” in the budget process.

Pat Quinn doesn’t get it. We deserve better from our Governor than the same old Blagojevich brand of politics. It’s time for leadership. That’s why we are writing to you today.

Sign up to volunteer now and help Dan send a message to the Governor that the time for politics as usual has ended. All across our state, Illinoisans are ready for new leadership that puts aside petty politics and is capable of moving our state forward. With your help we can build a better Illinois. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Most of this is rehashed from Friday’s back and forth, but there’s an added emphasis on Rod Blagojevich today, so it’s news I suppose.

Notice, though, that Hynes himself has not launched any of these attacks so far. Last Friday’s statement was made by Hynes’ campaign spokesman. Today’s is from the “campaign team,” whatever that is. We’re still waiting to hear from Hynes himself.

* The Tribune has Gov. Pat Quinn’s response

Quinn, at an event earlier today, said he was more “in to governing” than in considering the challenge posed by Hynes, the state’s three-term comptroller.

“In the last six months, that’s everything I’ve done is repairing the damage caused by my predecessor and by (Blagojevich’s predecessor, imprisoned former Republican Gov.) George Ryan,” Quinn said. “There’s a lot of damage that needs to be repaired.”

The Trib also quotes Sen. Dick Durbin as saying he’ll probably stay neutral in the primary.

Ahh but who does he give access to his database to that he is trying to put together to counter madigans.

And what does Quinn do if Hynes gets access to the madigan databse but not Quinn…..

  2. All this mudslinging shows is these two did not play well with others, and they have both been in the same playground for a while.

  3. Good points, Ghost.

  4. Ghost, the DNC database is pretty accessible. And as someone who used it to canvass for 6 hours this weekend, it needs work. The Madigan DB on the other hand, no clue.

  5. Ghost, after re-reading your post: Is Durbin putting together his own DB separate from the DNC one?

Comment by Obamarama Monday, Jul 27, 09 @ 4:01 pm

  6. I thought I saw Durbin near the Cub dugout Sunday handing out high fives when they scored.

  7. I think the Hynes folks are splitting hairs…maybe Pat doesn’t have his “campaign team” put together to the extent that Hynes does…the Irish mafia that runs state government needs to have a sit down ASAP…

two letters, well if nothing else Hynes is ready for a career with the UN

  9. One, what proposals did any of the GOP candidates offer to fix the budget?

We heard a lot about cutting our way out… but now that that’s happening we’re seeing front page Trib stories about how devastating those cuts actually are.

Obamarama, it’s my understanding the Durbin/county Dem chairs database is separate from the DNC though I may be wrong.

The Madigan/state Dem party database is definitely different than the DNC’s.

And FYI the GOP in Illinois has its own versions as well.

  10. Bad move on the hynes campaign part here. it should strive to rise above the fray and lay off the unprovoked attacks for now. it’s too early for this and it makes the Hynes campaign look childish and petty, but more importantly it accomplished nothing. If hynes was simply trying to keep his name in the press, he needs to find a better way to do that in this time before he announces his candidacy.

  11. Bad Move, “Bad move on the hynes campaign part here. it should strive to rise above the fray and lay off the unprovoked attacks for now.”

…Quinn pretty clearly attacked Hynes a few days ago. This is the response.

Hynes isn’t supposed to defend himself? Not defending oneself is a sure way to instill confidence in voters (not).

  12. –While Governor Quinn is entitled to his own opinion, he’s not entitled to his own facts.–

Same phrase on Friday. Unless it’s a theme, put it away.

  13. ROB N,

yes Quinn attacked on Friday and the Hyne’s cap attack back on Friday. Today’s attack by the Hynes camp was unnecessary.

  14. doh! typing too fast…

I meant to write in my first sentence that…

the hynes camp attacked back on Friday.

  15. typing too fast and apparently reading too fast.

hmmm.. if this communication was just sent by the Hynes campaign to hynes supporters, then I guess it was really no big deal afterall. But maybe it should have been sent to supporters Friday night or saturday instead of 2 days after the fact?

durbin and daley keeping mum. it used to be durbin and quinn could not stand each other, something to do with a senate race. and, mayor daley, who last week praised quinn’s passion, was never really a quinn fan.

since quinn has become governor it seems that some have warmed to him. is that possible?

politicans are funny and their tounges are forked. hmmmm…

Comment by BAD MOVE HYNES CAMPAIGN Monday, Jul 27, 09 @ 6:21 pm

  16. Bad,

It may not be necessary to follow up the response into the next week, but clearly the Hynes camp is trying to goad Quinn into additional fodder. Since Quinn responded it clearly worked.

    That’s how campaigns are waged.

If you don’t like the political campaigning, well we citizens could move to a country that lives under a dictatorship and then we wouldn’t have to endure politics… ;)

    Comment by Rob_N Monday, Jul 27, 09 @ 6:22 pm

  17. OK - Mr. Hynes…
    Yesterday’s statement was enough.
Now you look too cute by half.

Enough. Tell those dim bulbs on your staff to stop repeating themselves.

    Thanks!

  18. Dan Hynes needs to worry about his incompetence in oversight concerning Illinois cemeteries. His performance there has been pathetic.

Comment by anon Monday, Jul 27, 09 @ 11:03 pm

  19. Not to mention his failure to protect the sanctity of the cemeteries he was supposed to be watching. Oh, and the funeral directors’ fund.

Comment by Chubs Mahoney Monday, Jul 27, 09 @ 11:38 pm

  20. Gah. The Comptroller’s office does not oversee EVERY aspect of cemeteries. This guilt-by-innuendo is getting rather stale.

Comment by Obamarama Monday, Jul 27, 09 @ 11:52 pm

  21. Obamarama, Durbin is trying to put together his own DB, to me itlooks like to counter madigans stranglehold (or stronghold) over the current IL dem DB. Madigan has his own DB that he allows certain dems partial access too thatis purported to be very very good.
