  1. That’s funnier than my gay Founding Fathers routine today!

But I bet Rick won’t find it funny.

  2. The defense on both sides of town is atrocious.

The big question for the Sox next year has to be Ramirez. My guess is he goes back to second and Beckham plays short, his natural position.

  3. Love it! Thanks, Rich.

  4. Congrats Rich and Sox fans everywhere.

Here’s an offseason tip: practice some base running. That episode in the early inning was worse than little league.

  5. Two.

    Bad.

    Teams.

    Yuck.

  6. Watching this game was like watching Dan Hynes arm wrestle Todd Stroger.

  7. ==That’s funnier than my gay Founding Fathers routine today!==

I don’t think the Cubs thing is all that funny, but you’re right, Vanilla Man - it IS funnier than your goofy gay Founding Fathers routine. Funnier than almost all of your routines, come to think of it.

  8. Like the Sox are doing so well.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:28 pm

  9. I will never understand the White Sox inferiority complex in this town. You do realize that both these teams are worthless and these games are meaningless, right?

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:32 pm

  10. had to turn to WGN radio after for schadenfreude. Santo sounded like he was going to die. funny thing was the commercial after was a promo from Soriano! omg, that non catch catch was very amusing. as was his game ending
    strikeout.

    god bless Wise!!!!!

  11. Anonymous, you got it backwards, dude.

    It’s a superiority thing.

  14. Rich Miller, you’re right, the White Sox are superior when it comes to beating up first base coaches. As a Chicagoan I rooted for the Sox in the 2005 World Series. If the Cubs ever did make it to the World Series I know every Sox fan in this town would be cheering against them. That’s the difference between the two team.

  15. ===when it comes to beating up first base coaches===

That guy was a Cub fan. He started his day at Wrigley Field. Go read all about it.

  16. ===That’s the difference between the two team.===

You should check this blog’s archives for the lead-up to the 2005 World Series. The Cub fans were brutal with their insults.

So, spare me the mythical nonsense, please.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:44 pm

  17. Both teams are horrible. Unfortunately, as a strong Cubs fan, the Cubs are worse. Milton Bradley is a complete bust out….the pitching is gone and Soriano, Fukudome and the rest couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat.

    Go Bears!

Comment by View from the Cheap Seats Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:45 pm

  18. Where are all the bandwagon fans from 2005? Surely not attending the games.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:45 pm

  19. Cub fans know all about the bandwagon. lol That’s all you got. Stadium tourists.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:51 pm

  20. Well Cub fans, there’s always next year and the year after that and the year after that…

Comment by Okay Then... Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 4:52 pm

  21. I agree with A Naughty Moose. Go CARDS!!

Comment by Leatherneck Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:00 pm

  22. For the record, the Cubs were at a bit of an additional disadvantage from the absence of their star 1B Derrick Lee, who was with his wife as she gave birth to their second child today. So Fox had to play 1B instead of replacing that useless clown Soriano in left field.

Comment by fedup dem Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:02 pm

  23. Okay Then… I think they have simplified it to “Wait till next century”.

Comment by Pre Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:10 pm

  24. What’s the difference between the Cubs and the Sox this season?

The Cubs still have a winning record.

Comment by TJ Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:28 pm

  25. I think that what okay then meant is that everybody admires Cub fans loyalty and optimism, right? that glass half full mentality should be respected

Comment by optimism Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:32 pm

  26. Here’s your 2010 Cub outfield:

LF: Soriano, $16 million. Signed for 2011-2014 at $18 million a year. Full no-trade protection.

CF: Fukudome, $13 million. Signed for 2011 at $13.5 million. No-trade protection except for teams of his choice.

RF: Bradley, $9 million. Signed for 2011 at $12 million.

That’s a lot of money for perhaps the worst defensive outfield in baseball (Quentin, Pods and Dye are in that picture). Two Designated Hitters who can no longer hit and a mediocre center fielder who can’t hit.

One of the many reasons the Rickets were able to knock about $200 million off Zell’s asking price. They’re going to have to eat most of those salaries just to get rid of them.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:34 pm

  27. C’mon all you curmudgeonly critics. That was actually a pretty good game. It was mostly well pitched, provided a few laughs, and until the very end was nip and tuck so that either team could have pulled it out. Maybe I’m just a romantic at heart, but baseball is a game, the great American summer pastime, and true fans shouldn’t need their team to be roaring into the post season in order to be able to enjoy a beautiful afternoon at the ball park. Oh, and WAY TO GO SOX!!

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 5:48 pm

  28. Great, Rich!!! Thank you so much for adding humor and insight to what could be so dry and discouraging at times.

Comment by Ricketts Field Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 6:13 pm

  29. Go Sox! Great to have a blog with a Sox focus, with a dash of politics on the side.

Forget the last 2 weeks- any day the Sox beat the Cubs is a good day.

Comment by DuPage Dave Thursday, Sep 3, 09 @ 6:14 pm

  30. This Sox v. Cubs game was like a Green Party Primary: I guess it’s necessary, but it simply doesn’t matter who wins.

  31. Seriously, why was my post deleted? It regarded both teams being bad but questioning your statement about “stadium tourists”? You know when I wrote about the higher ratings for Cubs on TV and radio versus the Sox. Rich, you’re team is better but my facts were correct and not mean spirited. You know, the one about the Cubs have the largest or highest road attendance average whereas the Sox had the lowest. You shouldn’t deleted the comments just because you disagree with them. Especially when they’re factual. What, you didn’t like my last sentence about the historical ineptness of both teams? The tallest midget comment? Seriously….

  35. Yeah!!! Go Sox! You guys are under .500 and can’t win the worst division in baseball!! Yay!

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Sep 4, 09 @ 8:37 am

  36. I don’t think that the “choke” comment is accurate.

“Choke” implies that the talent was there. The Cubs thought that Carlos Zambrano was the answer. That’s a team without a chance to begin with.

Comment by Skeeter Friday, Sep 4, 09 @ 8:45 am

  37. A good way for the Sox to end their final game of the year with the Cubs!
