  1. Two thumbs up. Positive ads work better for me, and I like this one a lot.

  2. I was not surprised when he took on Barack Obama in the Illinois Senate primary.

Comment by George Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 2:40 pm

  3. So, I don’t get it - he is reinforcing the message of “no surprise” throughout the whole video (my assumption being that he was accepting his boring persona).

Then at the end - he is the surprise?

Comment by George Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 2:42 pm

  4. Two big thumbs WAY up!
    Go Hynes!

  5. Hey, my grade school teacher, wife and neighbor all like me, you should too!

    Yawn.

  6. I like it, but shouldn’t this have gone up first instead of 3rd?

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 2:52 pm

  7. Hold your fire Anonymous & George-
The target audience for this ad are people who are unfamiliar with Hynes. The ad is good and does exactly what it is intended to do.

  8. I think he should showcase his attractive young family more, but that’s of course up to him. There is a cost.

  9. Hey anon 2:48, does Adlai Stevenson like you too? Just sayin.

  10. Ghost, I wasn’t surprised when you gave me that TV ad lesson.

Comment by George Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:06 pm

  11. Great Ad…Up beat and fresh. Doesn’t hurt to have a good looking and professional wife. Throw in Adlai for those of us that remember him and he has a winner.

Comment by Louis Howe Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:09 pm

  12. You’re an old hand who’s been around the block few times, eh George? Well, the same can’t be said about everyone else. Not everyone is at your level of political sophistication.

Comment by Ghost of Christmas Past Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:10 pm

  13. On this blog, I am a lightweight.

Comment by George Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:11 pm

  14. The ad is ok. Nothing spectacular. The last scene with all the people looking all happy is way too contrived. But to a different point, I haven’t seen these ads too much on TV in Chicago, but isn’t the electorate still burned out after the last go around and then the Olympic letdown. Isn’t it way too early for this kind of stuff??? I doubt Hynes will be on TV for the next four months, but if Hynes wants to dump some dough on media buys right now, I doubt they will buy him any traction and could turn people off if they are blasted with them all the time. I Would love to see a poll in a few more weeks to know for sure.

  15. how big is the buy?

Comment by bored now Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:28 pm

  16. Good ad overall. Nice images, I agree that the professional attractive wife doesnt hurt anything. I would also second the thought that this should have been the first ad buy and not the third, it would have been better to introduce himself first and then go for the political attacks on Quinn.

Comment by Speaking at Will Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:29 pm

  17. Hokey presentation in a sort of Des Moines TV-market local ad kind of way. Good content that sends a positive message. I wonder why the producers laid it on so thick.

Comment by Angry Chicagoan Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:47 pm

  18. Saw this ad once during last night’s Bears game. A decent intro ad. Never did see the attack ads other than on the Intertubes. Then again, I don’t watch a whole lot of TV.

Comment by Stcuk with Sen. CPA Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:50 pm

  19. ==how big is the buy? ==
Big enough. This is another nice effort from our next governor.

Comment by Bill Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 3:57 pm

  20. I like the ad. It portrays a nice holsum and clean-cut image of him.
The only thing that I would have suggested is a little dark coloring to his hair, just a smidge (the salt-pepper thing works and its good). He’s looking a little too gray in the ad for my taste especially with such a young family. I’m so vain?

so, to all of my detractors, of which there are many on this blog: you may now pounce on my post. ;-)

Comment by Will County Woman Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 4:02 pm

  21. Yes, they were getting some hits in on Quinn, but Hynes’ negatvies were going way up. Remember, most people have no clue who he is. This is their response. He should have done this ad 3 weeks ago, and hitting negative now.

Comment by Niles Tonwship Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 4:10 pm

  22. How is this not the first ad? That is what I am wondering? He needs to introduce himself to Illinois voters and this is the second or third ad up and not the first? Makes no sense.

Comment by AJK Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 4:14 pm

  23. When were hynes’ negatives going “way up”? His negatives weren’t high according to the last several polls. His “I don’t know [of him]” ratings were high.

And Niles, it’s early enough for him to still introduce himself after the two negative ads. I don’t think he’s lost any ground here.

Comment by Will County Woman Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 4:16 pm

  24. I think that the person making the decisions on this campaign needs to have his/her head examined. This ad should have run first. Then he should have gone negative until just before thanksgiving. The ad is hokey and soft, kind of like the candidate, so at least its honest.

Bill, I dont understand your blind allegiance to blago for the past 7 years, and now your support for Hynes. How is he different than Quinn? Why do you dislike Quinn so much?

    Please enlighten me.

Comment by anon Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 4:22 pm

  25. There is a lot of questions there, anon, 4:22.. First, after getting handed the governorship on a sliver platter Quinn has messed up the state even more than it was. He actually is acting a lot like Rod and there seems to be no difference in his governance other than the fact that he flip flops weekly if not daily on almost every significant issue and that the state is much worse off now than last year. A good example is how he spent the last few weeks demonizing the legislature for the MAP cuts when that was his decision in his budget. I fully expected to hear him calling the Speaker a republican at these stupid rallies. If you don’t like Quinn’s position on an issue get a hundred people to yell at him at a rally and he’ll change it.
After getting burned by the last machine candidate for governor why take a chance on another one? The fact that Quinn actually sought out the committeemen, who are also aldermen, for their blessing kind of makes me a little leery. How many jobs did Quinn have to promise to get endorsed?
I like Hynes because I know that he cares more about the state than he does about himself, unlike Rod and Quinn. He’s honest and I know he would never allow politics to interfere with governing like Rod did and Quinn has repeatedly done.
OK, maybe Dan is not that a great politician but Illinois needs a governor right now not a politician. We need a serious, competent, honest, down to Earth, unselfish, leader like Dan Hynes as governor, not a hot dog like Rod or a gadfly flip flopper like Quinn.

Comment by Bill Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 5:01 pm

  26. LoL! As the ’60s singing sensation Marvalettes would say/sing…Don’t mess with Bill.

Comment by Will County Woman Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 6:14 pm

  27. The issue is, in my humble opinion, is Hynes funding option for capitol attainable? I doubt it, and if income tax is the best option for “balance” his position is killing it every time he sends a message. But the theatre of the GOP candidates eating each other is worthy of another election cycle…everyone should be in Springfield on the 5th!

Comment by bwana Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 7:23 pm

  28. I saw the ad on TV this morning. It was a nice ad, but it did not have the resonance of his first ad’s. I can not recall a single peice of infromation from the ad lees then 12 hrs later. I can recall facst from his earlier ad’s.

Comment by Ghost Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 8:25 pm

  29. Great spot!

  30. George, 2:40: You were “out there” at the time, too, huh? lol

Anons 2:49 and 2:52: please use another handle; that one’s already taken. Thanks.

OK ad overall; I like that it’s positive. However, I’d say it will appeal most to the oldsters–even though they pretty obviously tried to mix it up a bit.

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 9:52 pm

  31. Have to agree with Bill re his comments on Quinn but in regards to Hynes and his ad…. Dan, you’ve been on the state payroll for how many years and you haven’t really done jack. You weren’t on Indiana or Iowa’s payroll, you were on ours and you just really haven’t done much at a time when a real leader could have easily emerged over the garbage we’ve been dealing with from the Guv’s office all the years you’ve been there on our dime.

If a Dem wins the Guv’s office again, it is because we live in a Dem state, not because there is an intelligent, humble and qualified Dem running for the position. One has proven to be an idiot and the other has a sense of entitlement.

Comment by Chi Gal Monday, Oct 19, 09 @ 11:45 pm

  32. I would really like to see what % of his buy is the positive ad, and what % is the negative ad. I’ll be any $ that he’s running substanially more negative ads now than positive.

  33. My fourth-grade teacher thought I should run for President. Sadly, she is no longer available for endorsement purposes.
