* As almost all of you know, today is the first day to file nominating petitions…
The every-two-year Springfield ritual that has candidates acting like anxious concert-goers starts again this morning.
But instead of lining up to get tickets for their favorite band, they line up outside the State Board of Elections to file their nominating petitions early and get a chance at top billing on the Illinois primary ballot.
* There are some holes in the filings.
For instance, as of about 11 this morning, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger has not yet filed his petitions, according to the county’s website. Congressman Danny Davis has filed for board president, but not for congress as of yet. [UPDATE: Davis claims to have filed over 50,000 signatures for board president.]
Only two candidates have filed for Cook County Assessor as of this writing, Bob Shaw and Joe Berrios.
* Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Ryan will file at the end of the period, according to a spokesman…
Campaign spokesman Dan Curry says Ryan will file petitions on Nov. 2 to get on the Republican primary ballot, the last day of filing for candidates in state and federal primaries. […]
The decision to file petitions Nov. 2 is an apparent attempt to be the last name voters see on the long Republican primary ballot for governor. Candidates in line to file this morning will be subject to a lottery for the prized top spot on the ballot.
Andy McKenna also hasn’t filed, and will likely wait until the last day as well. Same goes for Dan Proft, who was offering to pay circulators a buck a signature over the weekend. The four GOP gubernatorial candidates who did file are: Andrzejewski, Brady, Dillard and Schillerstrom.
* There have been rumors that Democratic US Senate candidate Cheryle Jackson was having trouble with signatures, and she didn’t file today, either.
Conservative Republican Patrick Hughes has also not yet filed for US Senate.
* Justin Obermann is the only candidate of either party to file for treasurer so far, according to the Board of Elections’ website. Robin Kelly is the slated candidate in that party. Sen. Dan Rutherford is the GOP candidate. Rutherford is bringing Karl Rove into Illinois next month, by the way.
* Only three Democrats have filed for lieutenant governor as of yet. Sens. Rickey Hendon and Terry Link and Rep. Art Turner. Rep. Mike Boland didn’t file and neither did Ald. Sandi Jackson. Hendon filed for Davis’ congressional district as well. Four GOPs filed for LG: Brad Cole, Jason Plummer, Don Tracy and Randy White.

* Biden, Halvorson blamed for ‘dine and ditch’: A 31-year-old U.S. Air Force pilot seeking the GOP nomination for Halvorson’s seat questioned whether taxpayers should be on the hook for the expense. “What did the city have to provide? That fundraiser had to have police and fire doing overtime in a city where they’re telling people to take furloughs,” said Adam Kinzinger, of Manteno. “She raised money at the fundraiser; she should give some of it back so people aren’t footing the bill for her campaign.”

Flider hasn’t filed but Tim Dudley who had been planning a run for the senate did file for that house seat.

lol at so many things posted on this thread (i.e. Cheryl Jackson) Come on girl!
If the republicans were smart, they’d bring Karl Rove in to take a look at the governor’s race. No doubt he would understand that the field seriously needs to be cleared and narrowed down to only two going into the primary.

wow, that filing appears to be screwed up. It’s for the 51st House District, which is in Lake County. Dudley is in Decatur. Dudley likely filed for the 51st Senate district and something got screwed up at the board. I’m checking.

I ride the rails quite a bit and haven’t seen much evidence of anyone gathering signatures for any candidate in recent weeks. That’s rather unusual.

Do we know how many sigs anybody filed with? Also, did they have to be in line this morning to get the lottery or anytime today ok? I forget. Also, anybody from Water Rec file today?
I love filing day! It’s when we finally get to sort the real from the pretenders.

Okay, Topinka will win the Comptroller’s job; not just the nomination, but the position. She had a good reputation as Treasurer, she has the name recognition, and she will get the crossover (the Republicans deserve one office, anyway) vote. Plus she’s a woman, and that still counts in elections.

I think anyone who couldn’t file by today is in serious trouble.
More so than they think - there is a very small window before the holiday season to fundraise and get the word out. If you are still working on signatures at this point (and for the next week), you are way behind the game.

This is a silly question: is the filing information for those who file in Springfield on the SBE web site? I regularly use the campaign disclosure part of the site, but not sure if that’s where I should check, or is the filing information somewhere else on the site? I hate that site. If anyone can help me with this, I’d appreciate it.

Someone on my blog just pointed out that Alexi is claiming he filed with 17,000 signatures.

I thought the maximum was 10,000. Am I completely misinformed? If not, I am assuming what the press release meant to say was that he COLLECTED 17,000 signatures, not filed them. Or if they screwed up and actually filed too many, can he be challenged? Otherwise, what good is the rule?

The Cook County GOP countywide slate filed with over 10,000 signatures, thought they needed only 2,450 for the primary.

I am not suprised Jim Ryan is not filing today because he is just getting in the race. He will be considered a serious candidate. However, McKenna’s failure to file today suggests that he is scrambling for signatures. For someone who has apparently been planning this for a year or more, and was a party chair, his failure to file today looks more like a sign of significant weakness instead of evidence of a legitimate political strategy.

Candidates had to be in line by 8 to get in the lottery. There is a cut off after that point.
There were about 10 candidates who filed today for Water Rec. The 3 slated candidates were scrambling over the weekend. The party came in very short on signatures for them.

I just heard Todd Connor, the independent Navy vet candidate for water rec, filed with 22,000 sigs. Very impressive showing.

The prospect of Danny Davis as Cook County Board President fills me with dread and loathing…plus I will be having to hit the mute button on my remote much more than I do now when watching the 10 pm news…

downstate republican, I agree with you. your party is making a big mistake by having all of those candidates. if Jim Ryan and McKenna enter the race your party is likely to lose the general because your best candidate for the general will have probably been knocked out.

The first hurdle is made…the Republican Party has a great slate of candidates who have already filed: Kirk, several outstanding gubernatorial candidates, and in Cook Co, a great local slate. 2010, here we come.

conservative republican, I agree that Mark Kirk is good to go U.S. Senate. I don’t think Alexi G., assuming he survives the primary, has the juice to beat a moderate and experienced/credible federal legislator on the republican side.

CC. 22,000 for Todd Connor is an impressive number. Also heard Maureen Kelly brought in almost 16,000 and she only started passing in mid September. Also Wallace Davis had a large number but I don’t know what it is yet.

Were Doc Walls and Ed Scanlan in line this morning? Anyone know? Occassionally Doc Walls’ name appears in newspapers as an also-running, but it doesn’t seem like most people are aware. I’ve never seen it mentioned in the Tribune, just the Sun-Times. I have olnly heard it mentioned maybe once or twice during TV news reports when I heard his name it was probably back in August around the time of the infamous U of I trustee standoff between Pat Quinn and the two black trustees standing up against him on principle.

Yeah. I’m surprised Dock Walls is going to go thru with this race. Well what was I thinking anyway. Decided to check the Lt. Governor’s race I suppose there are no surprises yet. Sandi Jackson hasn’t filed, that is if she intends to.

Now that Allen is out who is going to get Doherty if he even files. I still can’t figure out why anyone would give up alderman to try for state senate. Brian probably just wants to get out of town for a few weeks at a time which is a really scary thought in itself.

Jim Ryan just started upped his pay per signature to $4-5 according to a few people who have been asked to collect. He also asked for help from the IL Republican Party and was turned down. He is struggling.

I’m not suprised on Ryan….. he started so late, Rick Pearson talked about it on a tweet around when he came around to running and said, if you aren’t in the game by now, you may not make it

Rich Miller—so you think Brady is just someone using the Extreme Makeover house to advance his campaign? I know folks are really cynical especially in Chicago but it’s really not the case. Did you see him in the national broadcast no because he didn’t want any confusion about what his family was there for? He is a good guy and he and his brothers the volunteers built the house for the right reasons. If it would have been any other campaign they would have been all over it.
