Quinn: Brady would rather gay people not exist

Posted in:

* Back in the day,a candidate could say something inappropriate to a small publication and nobody would notice right away. That Interwebtube thingy has forever changed all that, however. Take, for instance, Gov. Pat Quinn’s comments to a publication called “Grab Magazine”

“Senator Brady doesn’t believe in equality for women and would rather LGBT people not exist,” said Quinn.

Really? Isn’t that just a slightly less blunt way of saying what Sen. Rickey Hendon said the other day? We’re awfully close to an invocation of Godwin’s Law in this campaign, if we’re not there already.

…Adding… Oops. I forgot to post these stories today. Sorry…

* Bright Start major issue in treasurer race

* AG candidates weigh in on corruption busting

* Foster fights to hold seat

* Herald & Review: Two area congressmen should be replaced

* Southern: Two Democrats, one Republican endorsed for U.S. Congress

* House candidate seeks transparency in state spending incentives

* Preckwinkle claims consistency on Cook tax repeal

* Marin: Assessor’s race ripe for protest vote

  1. Thanks for making me Google “Godwin’s Law”. Now I know! And, I say, yes, we’re very close.

Comment by TimB Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:16 pm

  2. I can’t wait until this election is over

Comment by ILPundit Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:16 pm

  3. Saying that was probably a bit overboard, I think it’s probably an accurate statement. It’s not that Brady wishes all LGBT people would just drop dead or anything, just that he would prefer a world in which they didn’t exist in the first place. I think that would be in line with his religious views.

Comment by Matt Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:16 pm

  4. TimB, I’ve added a link for those who come after you.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:17 pm

  5. I suspect at times Quinn’s campaign would rather he not talk…

Comment by OneMan Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:20 pm

  6. Quinn’s Law: In the closing week of a campaign, the sanity of a candidate’s utterances is directly proportional to the candidate’s chances for victory.

Comment by Bubs Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:21 pm

  7. Matt….which is it..”overboard” or “accurate”? Quinn was accurate but should not have said it out loud? Oh wait, once again this is just political puffery and the court said it’s okay to do that in a campaign. At least they let Blago off that particular hook a few years back.

Comment by RobRoy Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:24 pm

  8. Desperation

    Comment by Matt 2 Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:25 pm

  9. That is a pretty awesome play for the gay vote. Vote for me or you will *cease to exist.*

We need more attacks along these lines. Vote for me or the law of gravity will be reversed, etc.

Comment by Dirt Digger Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:29 pm

  10. One of those moments when a candidate asserts something they cannot prove and the campaign manager decides it’s time for a cocktail.

Maybe it’s desperation, maybe it is just Quinn being the guy that he is. Either way, it isn’t going to win him votes he doesn’t already have and runs the risk of solidifying a few against him.

    Comment by A.B. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:29 pm

  11. oh and thanks for the Godwin’s Law reference, that was a good Google moment.

    Comment by A.B. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:30 pm

  12. Is it really surprising that a crackpot like quinn says so many crazy things. After this election he can go back to being the crazy uncle at just his family gatherings and not subject the whole state to these ramblings. He will be the guy sitting next to Hollywood hendon.

Comment by Fed up Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:31 pm

  13. I bet Quinn doesn’t have the testicular veracity to criticize senator Meeks feelings on this subject.

Comment by Fed up Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:33 pm

  14. Quinn came pretty close to saying the same thing in the Fox interview you posted earlier today.

Comment by Commonsense in Illinois Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:34 pm

  15. Unbelievable. Brady should go golfing. Quinn, once again, is working overtime for him, poking holes in a sinking boat.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:35 pm

  16. Next Pat Quinn campaign motto:

“VOTE FOR ME OR BILL BRADY WILL EAT YOUR BABIES!!!”

Comment by John Bambenek Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:37 pm

  17. Quinn believes everything he says and thinks anyone who disagrees is evil. He is a verbose train wreak. It will soon be over for him. He won’t be missed.

    Comment by D.H. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:41 pm

  18. Hendon said something about executing gays - over the top by any standards (and I suspect it to be actively untrue).
Quinn said something much more neutral, which may or may not be somewhat truthful - but at least it doesn’t accuse his opponent of planning some sort of active genocidal activity. One may have non-positive feelings about a group without wishing them harm.

Comment by titan Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:41 pm

  19. Only you, Pat, can ramble and drone on in politicianese for 15 minutes without saying anything at all–and then in an unguarded moment spit out a humdinger like this one which jolts people awake and makes them wonder about your sanity . Do you have any self-awareness at all, Governor? Any self-restraint?

Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:43 pm

  20. I wonder, when Pat Quinn loses next Tuesday, does he use his concession speech to announce he is running for Mayor?

Comment by Him Say Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:44 pm

  21. Perhaps a good Q of the Day would be what do Quinn and Brady wish not exist.

Comment by OneMan Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:47 pm

  22. Quinn’s desperation, coupled with his absolute metaphysical certainty that he is right about everything have combined to create some truly ridiculous comments.

Comment by Adam Smith Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:52 pm

  23. I would say that we are at the point were Godwin’s law should be invoked and that we are at the point were Pat Quinn and his staff have run out of ideas on how to win.

Comment by RMW Stanford Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:53 pm

  24. D.H. has it right. He’s also desparate and will probably come up with more, borderline hysterical comments the closer we get to Tuesday. He’s so convinced he’s the best thing for this state that he seems to be falling apart now he realizes he could lose to Brady.

Comment by Wensicia Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 4:57 pm

  25. Why doesnt Carol Marin just come out and say that she has a crush on Claypool already? I mean this lady is campaigning for Claypool under the Suntimes banner. I am protesting the Suntimes until this election is over, there is no equality here. I am going to get my news from you Rich from now on.

Comment by He gone... Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 5:01 pm

  26. Not a big surprise. We’ve already seen “Denial” and “Bargaining.” I guess were in “Anger” now.

Any bets on whether we’ll see “Depression” before next Wednesday, when “Acceptance” comes knocking at the door.

    Comment by Kubler-Ross Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 5:05 pm

  27. Re: “VOTE FOR ME OR BILL BRADY WILL EAT YOUR BABIES!!!”

Vote for me or Bill Brady will gas your babies. Pay attention.

    Comment by T.J. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 5:38 pm

  28. I’ll agree that comments like these don’t belong in campaigns. This doesn’t even qualify as “going nuclear”. It’s post-apocalyptic if you ask me. However, I can’t help myself but stop and wonder if on some level Quinn’s correct. Before I get skewered (and I’m sure I will), how do you reconcile Brady’s adamant opposition to anything and everything related to the LGBT community - in political terms? I’m not trying to pick a fight or accuse anybody of being a bigot. I’m asking an earnest question.

I get the opposition to gay marriage even though I support the idea. What I don’t get is the opposition to basic human rights in terms of housing and the workplace.

  29. He has been saying this garbage since Ricky said it. He clearly agrees with what Hendon said. The left has tried to portray him as some wholesome, well-meaning grandfather figure. In truth, he has become every bit of a vicious Chicago Democrat. What makes me laugh is that 41% of the people are actually going to vote for this fool.

    Comment by Jim F. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 6:01 pm

  31. Smells so bad of despair. What is going on, are his internals that bad? Stupid things like this are why independents in the burbs will not vote for Quinn. No one believes this to be true and most would think this statment just silly and desperate.

Comment by cuban pilot Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 6:08 pm

  32. Quinn has never backed away from Hendon’s comments, other than to say that he wouldn’t have used such language.

Then he turns around and does a Hendon for this publication.

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 6:35 pm

  33. Dear He’s Gone:
Marin doesn’t have a crush on Gump…like Andy Shaw the records suggest she got tax break from Houli and is mandated to front for the Gump Campaign. Hinz also appears to be in FOH/G tax break club. Look it up.

Comment by CircularFiringSquad Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 6:37 pm

  34. Jeepers, and it’s only WEDNESDAY. Don’t know where he can go from here….Brady is Grand Dragon of the KKK? (oh, sorry, wasn’t that Byrd?)

Seriously, I can’t believe that he’s this kind of guy. He’s gotten so stressed out about actually being elected Governor…probably his greatest dream in life. He’s forgotten that any D candidate this year was going to be a sacrifice.

Go back to the old Quinn, be a decent person. If you lose you lose, but the sun will still come up.

Comment by Park Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 6:37 pm

  35. I’d have to say I find it much more offensive that Brady actually does consider gays as lesser human beings. I’m not sure if he wants them to exist, but he has proven that he doesn’t want them to have the same rights as everyone else.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 6:55 pm

  36. I’m not sure what you mean about Godwin or whoever. Quinn was talking to, I believe, a gay publication and rather bluntly stated, what he believes are Senator Brady’s beliefs. It’s up to Brady to refute them-but Brady has so many anti gay and anti women positions-that it is not inappropriate for Quinn to make these assertions.

Let’s not forget, just because you are running for Governor doesn’t mean you lose your free speech. This isn’t, after all, Nazi Germany is it?

    Comment by Phineas J. Whoopee Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 7:03 pm

  37. Ok, I just got a call from the highest source in the Brady campaign.

I have been told that immediately upon siezing office, Governor Brady intends to repeal every US Constitutional amendment except the second. However, he will amend the second amendment to allow only right-wing Christian breeders to carry arms - but only after they swear an oath of allegiance to the Governor.

Hold on. Ok, I’ve gotten further word from Bill, er, my source, that he will also repeal Roe v. Wade and the Clean Air and Water Act. He believes that by doing this, only non right-wingers will be poisoned and die.

Ok, my “source” has also confirmed that, upon imposition of his regime, all puppies and kitties are to be immediately turned over to the Republican party for termination.

I have much more ifo on the new ruler’s agenda but I don’t want to let all of the kitties and puppies out of the bag. Especially since the kitties and puppies have been condemned to a horrible death.

    Comment by Jim F. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 7:25 pm

  38. Jim F - Can you get your source to provide a budget plan from Brady? I mean, if he wants to divert attention from social issues, he might do well by providing ideas on non-social issues.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 7:36 pm

  39. Anonymous

My source tells me that Brady is going to cut funding that helps people raise puppies and kitties to become dogs and cats.

    Comment by Jim F. Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 7:43 pm

  40. The point is, Quinn could have outlined Brady’s positions quite easily without going there. The language becomes the issue rather than Brady’s positions. He loses credibility. A yabbo is a yabbo, no matter where they fall on the spectrum.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 7:45 pm

  41. Small Town Liberal: I’m sorry, Pat Quinn’s running mate has already been selected. Thanks for the supportive comments however.

Comment by Park Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 7:51 pm

  42. I have a great question for Roe Conn to ask Quinn tomorrow and Brady Friday, when they each get on WLS:

Hugh Heffner says he’s contemplating moving his corporate headquarters out of Chicago, where it was created, and consolidating all his operations on the West Coast. Since you guys are all for jobs and wooing industry and being “business friendly”, what incentives would you offer Heffner to keep the Playboy Empire H.Q. in Chicago vs. letting it go to L.A.?

Bonus points if Quinn can come up with a long anecdote for this one…. he would do better if he had a 2- minute egg timer go off to cue him when to stop each answer.

Comment by Newsclown Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 9:50 pm

  43. Maybe Brady has a secret plan to ship all Illinois gays to Iowa and then build a huge wall around it.

Comment by Pink Tomato Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 9:51 pm

  44. Now Quinn is saying this offensive crap himself, so he thinks attacking Brady and his voters is a way to get votes? All this proves is that Quinn isn’t mature enough to be elected to be governor if this lie is the best he can come up with.

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Oct 27, 10 @ 10:13 pm

  45. That interview with that quote/unquote “small publication” is so childish. It was written as if their audience was high schoolers who watch too much Glee on TV.

Comment by Halsted Boi Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 6:59 am

  46. What is Grab? I checked and couldn’t even find them as a legal business in Chicago? Did Gov. Quinn give an interview to a publication that’s not even registered to do business in the City of Chicago. Is this magazine put together in some parents basement? Where’s the office?

Comment by Halsted Boi Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:54 am

  47. Grab is run by a couple of guys who put on gay porn award show called the Grabbys. It’s a porn mag.
