Session to continue

Posted in:

Bomke must be reading the blog.

State Sen. Larry Bomke, R-Springfield, said Thursday the Senate should cancel next week’s session to free up hotel rooms for use by people displaced by Sunday’s tornadoes.

However, Senate President Emil Jones, D-Chicago, said there is no need to cancel the session and said Springfield’s economy is better off for the General Assembly remaining in town.

On the Senate floor, Bomke asked Jones to cancel next week’s scheduled session of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“We have over 1,000 people unable to live in their homes,” he said. “The problem we have is people are unable to get hotel space to stay because the General Assembly is in town.” […]

Meanwhile, Rep. Rich Brauer, R-Petersburg, asked House colleagues Thursday to contribute to the American Red Cross for tornado-relief efforts in Springfield. They chipped in more than $1,200, he announced later.

  1. Sounds like Bomke is grandstanding again, and not trying to get the job done by first working with the Senate President. Also, why did Cullerton have to carry the bill for Sangamon County to allow them to impose strict smoking requirements, and not Bomke?

  2. Here’s what Emil Jones said in todays paper.

“Jones was upset that Bomke didn’t talk to him about canceling next week’s session prior to bringing it up on the Senate floor.”

“Sen. Bomke throws that out there without even discussing it ahead of time,” Jones said. “I don’t know where he was coming from. If there is a problem as far as residents finding a place to stay, he should have sat down and at least discussed it. To make a statement like that with nothing substantial to back it up … ”

Oh Yah Right! I’m sure that Jones talks to Republicans about everything that he shoves down their throats. i.e. a $54 billion dollar budget that the Repubs had no say in.

  3. Bomke is only grandstanding if by grandstanding you mean doing his job of representing his district. As one of his constituents, I think he’s great.

Anyway, if the General Assembly is intent on meeting despite Bomke’s plea, I’m sure those of us from Springfield can come up with places to house them (we’ve got two couches, a queen-sized air mattress, and (for the particularly childish) an extra crib), and would be more than happy to do our part). In any event, it would probably do the Cook Co. delegation quite a bit of good to actually interact with people down here… :-)

If anyone wants to start a list of willing hosts, count us in.
